you make me feel like a fool

Summary:

"Divina, I really don't want to tell you this but I think you ought to know," Enid lowered her voice, looking down at her drink. "I think Yoko is cheating on you."

Divina's eyes widened slightly. "What?" She breathed out. "With who?"

Enid winced, wringing her hands. "Wednesday."

She did not understand why Divina immediately started to laugh so hard that hot chocolate shot out of her nose.

//

Yoko is Wednesday's emotional support vampire teaching her how to embrace her sudden gay awakening and work up the courage to ask Enid out.

Enid is an idiot.

Work Text:

Enid really liked that her two besties were finally getting along. Yoko and Wednesday had been at odds but had really only tolerated each other for her. But recently they were getting closer and bonding.

It was just-- they were too close. Not that Enid had any say in who they socialized with, she just didn’t expect their sudden friendship. Wednesday was suddenly seeking out Yoko just as much as she was looking for Enid.

Enid was fine with it. Totally fine. She was cool. She couldn’t spend every moment with Wednesday and was glad that her lonely friend was finally going out and socializing with people.

But she didn’t know why jealously twisted her insides each time she saw Yoko casually touch Wednesday and the girl didn’t shove her away or immediately threaten her with a knife like she would with others.

Maybe it was because Wednesday used to only let Enid touch her and it was a very long road to get there. Enid was glad that Wednesday was getting more comfortable with touch, don’t get her wrong, but she just didn’t know why it was bothering her so much that she wasn’t the one doing the touching.

Enid forced herself to focus on the present and started hanging out with some of her other friends again. She hadn’t realized just how much time she spent with Wednesday until the girl was suddenly busy all of the time.

“I have plans,” Wednesday would state whenever Enid would ask if she wanted to join her to do something. “Another time, perhaps.”

Except the next time would come around and Wednesday would mutter something along the same lines, her mind clearly elsewhere.

Then Enid caught them. Wednesday and Yoko were in the library, huddled together, shoulder to shoulder as they stared down at a book together. Enid couldn’t see what book it was but she failed to understand why it required them to be so close to read it at the same time.

What bothered her the most was how Wednesday seemed unbothered by the close contact or how Yoko turned her head to whisper into her ear.

It all came to a head when Enid saw Yoko do something similar to Divina, brushing up against her side, shoulder to shoulder as she leaned over to peer at her phone. She suddenly realized that Yoko and Wednesday may be more than friends.

It didn’t make sense. She tried to tell herself she was being silly. Yoko would not cheat on Divina, and certainly not with Wednesday. It was absurd. She was being a fool.

Then she caught sight of the duo in the hallway. Wednesday was leaning into Yoko, pressed against her chest as Yoko held her close.

Wednesday let absolutely nobody hug her. Enid had been an exception and it was only the once.

Enid’s stomach twisted at the thought that there was more going on.

She needed to tell Divina.

Wednesday was thrust out of her vision and back into her body, leaning against something tall and firm. It took her a moment to register the familiar metallic scent of blood before she realized that Yoko was keeping her steady.

“Hey, welcome back to the land of the mostly living,” Yoko hummed, moving her arms so Wednesday could step back. “You nearly fell down the stairs. I almost carried you down the hall before you did.”

Wednesday gave a small sniff, refusing to show her appreciation. “The vision was your fault in the first place.”

“It’s not my fault your freaky powers act up when I touch you sometimes,” Yoko rolled her eyes, giving Wednesday’s shoulder a gentle shove. “What was it about?”

“You were with Divina,” Wednesday started. “In your room. I am unsure of what you were speaking about but she was laughing very hard trying to tell you something.”

Yoko blinked at her. “Why would you have a vision about that?”

Wednesday gave a small shrug. “I do not choose what to see.”

Yoko eyed her before nodding. “Fair enough. Now, what were we talking about before you so rudely interrupted me with a vision.”

“Places to court someone,” Wednesday reminded her. Yoko let out a small hum as she nodded.

“Right. Divina loves water but I’m not a fan of the sun so a lot of our dates involve the lake at night. Not many people around.” Yoko got that gross lovey grin on her face whenever she spoke of her partner. “Anyway, you might like to do something like that."

“Yes.” Wednesday gave a curt nod. “The guise of darkness with the moon as our only source of light. But the water is not a good idea.”

Yoko turned to look at her and raised an eyebrow. “Why not?”

Wednesday paused for a few moments, glancing around before uttering under her breath, “I can’t swim.”

Yoko blinked at her. “What?”

Wednesday leveled a glare at her. “I know you heard me, fledgling.”

Yoko held her hands up in surrender. “Yeah, I just-- Weren’t you part of the Poe cup?”

Wednesday arched an eyebrow, feigning ignorance.

“You got in a boat in the middle of water without being able to swim in a competition where the goal was to sink other boats?” Yoko’s voice raised slightly.

“Fledgling!” Wednesday hissed the nickname Yoko loathed just to get her to be quiet.

Yoko immediately became quiet, glaring at Wednesday to show her displeasure. “Fine, yes, I’m listening.”

Wednesday took a slow breath. “It is of no importance. This is regarding things I can do, not cannot.”

Yoko let the topic go, likely realizing that she was treading on thin ice. “Yeah, okay. A walk late at night still might be nice.”

Wednesday let out a small hum as she considered it. “I see. And what would I do?”

Yoko grinned at her.

Enid took Divina to the Weathervane to break the news to her. Divina seemed confused at the offer for just the two of them, they didn’t spend a lot of time together alone, usually always with Yoko somewhere nearby.

“So…” Enid nervously cleared her throat, her hands clasped around her drink. “I asked you here because I wanted to tell you something.”

Divina frowned slightly, tilting her head to the side. “Is everything okay?”

Enid chewed on her lower lip for a moment as she thought about how to phrase things. “I need to talk to you about Yoko.”

“Is she okay?” Divina suddenly sat upright, looking alarmed. “What happened?”

Enid quickly waved her hands to dispel any negative thoughts. “No, no! I just-- I needed to say this.”

Divina took a slow sip from her hot chocolate to settle her nerves, her attention solely on Enid.

She stared at Divina who grabbed at napkins to try and wipe at her face before chocolate soiled her shirt, giggles bubbling out of her.

“Divina?” Enid questioned in confusion.

“Sorry!” Divina gasped out, reaching out to grab Enid’s hand to try and apologize. “I didn’t mean--”

“I’m a bit lost,” Enid mumbled, slumping in her chair as she felt foolish.

Divina took a few deep breaths, letting go of Enid’s hand in preference of sliding out of her booth to join Enid on the other side. “I’m sorry,” she said a little more calmly.

Enid felt mortified. She knew that she had misstepped but she wasn’t sure where. She ducked her head down in embarrassment, her face hot.

“Hey-- no,” Divina wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to react like that. You just-- you took me off guard.”

“I saw them. They were acting suspiciously and I thought…” Enid fumbled to explain, leaning into Divina a little as she slumped slightly.

“Thank you for bringing this to me,” Divina said softly, giving Enid a little squeeze. “I appreciate that I can count on you to come to me with this. But I promise that there’s nothing going on between them.”

“But I saw Wednesday hug Yoko!” Enid blurted out, using Divina’s surprise to unload all of the evidence she had collected.

Divina listened patiently, nodding along and letting out small “hmms” to show she was paying attention. When Enid paused to take a few deep breaths, Divina addressed her. “Listen, I know that Yoko and Wednesday are acting weird right now, but I promise you that it’s nothing to worry about.”

Divina sounded so sure of it. Enid squinted at her suspiciously before gasping as it hit her. “You know what’s going on!”

Divina gave her an embarrassed smile. “I do. They don’t want anyone to know, it’s personal. I only found out by accident. But I promise that they’re not hooking up.”

“You’re probably right.” Enid knew that Yoko wouldn’t cheat. She knew her best friend, Yoko wouldn’t do that to Divina. She was head over heels for the siren. “I feel stupid.”

“Don’t be,” Divina soothed, patting her back. “If I saw Wednesday hug someone, I’d be suspicious too.”

“Would you do me the honor of accompanying me out on this dreadfully lit night for a stroll through the poorly lit pathways that surround the school?” Wednesday recited.

Yoko stared at her. “Yeah… I don’t think that’s exactly what I meant.”

Wednesday scowled at her. “I did what you said, did I not? I stated that I would like her to come with me, I stated the time and place, and I stated that it would be just us.”

“You make it sound like you’re going to murder her.” Yoko reached up to pinch the bridge of her nose in exasperation. “Try this. ‘Enid, would you do me the honor of going on a walk with me later tonight?’”

Wednesday narrowed her eyes at Yoko but nodded sharply. “Enid, would you do me the honor of going on a walk with me later tonight,” she parroted.

Yoko grinned at her. “There we go!”

“But how do I make it clear?” Wednesday inquired. “We’ve gone on late-night excursions before. How do I impress that this is in a romantic nature?”

Yoko took a moment to think. “You could just say, “Do you want to go on a date with me?” to start out and then ask the rest.”

“Enid, would you like to go on a… date with me?” Wednesday tested the words on her tongue. “It sounds juvenile.”

“But it gets your point across. Not everything needs to sound like you’re a poet from the 1800s.” Yoko raised an eyebrow at Wednesday. “C’mon. You got this.”

Wednesday stuck her nose in the air. “Of course I do, fledgling.”

Yoko arrived back at the dorm that she shared with Divina, surprised when her girlfriend immediately tugged on her arm to lead her further into the room, her lips curled up in a malicious grin as she quietly giggled to herself.

“I have something to tell you,” Divina said, a little giggle escaping her lips.

Yoko suddenly recalled the vision Wednesday had that knocked her off her feet of Divina laughing uncontrollably. “Oh?”

Divina nodded. “Enid asked me to the Weathervane earlier today so we could talk, and she said--” More laughs spilled out of her mouth. “She said that she thought you were cheating on me!”

Yoko blinked at her. “What?”

Divina was laughing so hard that she curled her fingers into Yoko’s sleeves to keep herself upright. “With-- with Wednesday!” She gasped out.

Yoko took a moment to think about dating Wednesday before her girlfriend’s contagious laughter made a snicker escape her lips. “Are you serious?”

Divina nodded her head as she laughed so hard she was crying.

Yoko fell into a fit of laughter alongside her, wishing she could tell her best friend how much of an oblivious idiot she was.

Wednesday cleared her throat as soon as Enid entered their shared room. “Enid. I have something I wish to discuss with you.”

Enid froze in her tracks, spinning to look at Wednesday. “Yes?”

Enid’s heart pounded inside her chest. Wednesday wasn’t very good at communication so asking to actually do so was like the equivalent of a romantic partner texting you “We need to talk”.

Wednesday looked nervous, which worried Enid even more. She tried to think of something she could have done that would warrant Wednesday being so nervous around her. “Okay…”

Wednesday cleared her throat, her eyes immediately averting as she rocked on her feet slightly. “Enid… would you do me the honor of going on a walk with me later on tonight?”

Enid stared at her. It sounded so… formal. “Oh… um, yeah. Sure.”

Wednesday gave a curt nod, seemingly debating on whether or not to add something else. “I would like…”

Enid waited, her heart hammering so hard against her ribcage that she thought it would burst out of her chest.

Wednesday looked frustrated as if the words she wanted to say weren’t forming in her mouth. Wednesday finally growled under her breath and stormed toward her. Enid tensed up, bracing herself for whatever Wednesday was going to do before the smaller girl stomped past her and out of the room.

Enid debated about going after her but decided to respect Wednesday’s boundaries. If she left then that meant she didn’t want to be around her at the moment.

Enid wondered what she did wrong.

Yoko was interrupted by someone pounding on the door to her dorm. She let out a soft groan, leaning away from where she had been having a very nice time kissing her girlfriend.

“Maybe if we ignore them, they’ll go away,” Divina suggested, wiggling closer in Yoko’s lap. “It’s probably just my brother.”

Yoko grinned and pulled Divina close again, her fingers curling into the back of her uniform to press her closer.

“Fledgling!”

Yoko jolted at the nickname hissed through the door. That was definitely not Kent. “Get up.”

Divina immediately got off of Yoko’s lap so that Yoko could answer the door. She opened the door to reveal Wednesday, her face twisted in the unfamiliar sight of stress.

Wednesday brushed past her into the room, jabbing a finger at Divina when she saw her. “Out!” she ordered like the girl was a dog.

Yoko sighed, setting a hand on Wednedsay’s shoulder as she addressed Divina. “Give us some space, babe?”

“Yeah,” Divina hummed, smoothing out her uniform as she moved toward the door. “Text me when you’re done.”

As soon as the door closed, Wednesday spun to look at Yoko. “I made a fool of myself!”

“Calm down,” Yoko soothed, guiding Wednesday over to her bed to take a seat. “It’s alright. Tell me what happened.”

Wednesday perched herself on the edge of the bed reluctantly. “I managed to ask her on an excursion tonight.”

“Great!” Yoko grinned at her before encouraging her, “And then?”

Wednesday sneered. “Then I made a fool of myself!”

Yoko blinked. “It’s alright,” she immediately tried to soothe when she saw how genuinely distressed Wednesday was. “You managed to do the first part of it.”

“But I was unable to communicate that I wished for this venture to be of a romantic nature!” Wednesday huffed.

“Okay.” Yoko went into caretaker mode just like she did when Enid got upset. She sat on the bed next to Wednesday and gently bumped their shoulders together. “You still have time to clarify it.”

Wednesday clenched her jaw before reaching her hands up to bury her face into them. It was such an un-Wednesday move that Yoko carefully wrapped an arm around her.

“I feel like such a fool,” Wednesday mumbled into her hands.

“We’re all a bit of a fool when we like somebody,” Yoko said softly. “Did I tell you about the time I was so busy staring at Divina that I walked right into a pole and cracked my sunglasses?”

Wednesday tilted her head to peer an eye out at her. “Surely not.”

Yoko nodded her head. “Maybe about the time I didn’t realize I had blood on my face after a meal and it wasn’t until after I had a conversation with Divina before we started dating that Enid pointed it out to me and I was so mortified that I carried wet wipes with me for a week.”

Yoko knew that it was probably a bad idea to give Wednesday so much ammo against her but revealing her embarrassing moments of pining over Divina seemed to make the smaller girl feel better so she continued on about her moments when she made a complete fool of herself in front of the girl she liked.

Enid took a deep breath as she waited at the planned meet-up spot for Wednesday. It was already nearly dark out, the moonlight illuminating the courtyard around her as she checked her phone once again for the tenth time in five minutes.

Wednesday was late. Wednesday had two types of modes, very early or not arriving at all. In the case of the latter, Enid had to assume that something terrible befell the girl and she would have to go hunt her down.

“Apologizes for my tardiness,” Wednesday suddenly appeared. Enid jumped, having been so engrossed in her thoughts that she didn’t hear her.

“It’s alright.” Enid was just glad that she was spending some one-on-one time with Wednesday.

Wednesday finally thrust a piece of paper out at Enid. “Here.”

Enid blinked, reaching out to take the paper. She recognized it as the type that Wednesday would use for her typewriter, letters neatly typed onto the page.

She read it.

She blinked.

She read it again.

Enid, I seem to find myself unable to verbalize it, but I would like to make it clear that my intentions for tonight were meant to be in a romantic nature.

Enid wasn’t sure she understood. She looked up at Wednesday who fidgeted slightly under her stare. “I don’t… understand?”

Wednesday huffed. “It’s in the note,” she flapped a hand at the paper. “What is there not to understand?”

“I just--” Enid looked down at the note, rereading ‘romantic nature’ once again. “Is this a… date?”

Maybe it was just the lighting but she could have sworn that a faint pink tint hit Wednesday’s cheeks. “I would like it to be.”

Oh.

Enid suddenly felt like a fool.

“I thought you liked Yoko,” she blurted.

Wednesday blinked at her, tilting her head to the side slightly in confusion. “She is an amicable ally.”

“No, I mean--” Enid cut herself off. Wednesday seemed genuinely confused about what she was talking about. “I saw you in the library huddled together.”

“Ah.” Wednesday averted her eyes. “We were looking at maps of the school to see what the best place to take you was.”

“But--” Enid started. “I saw you hugging Yoko!”

Wednesday stared in confused disgust. “I would not initiate a hug with that bloodsucker.”

“But I saw you! In the halls! She was holding you!” Enid declared.

“Oh.” Wednesday frowned. “I had a vision. She was keeping me upright.”

Enid had completely forgotten about Wednesday’s visions. The thought had not even crossed her mind even though she had caught Wednesday plenty of times before she slumped over or hit the ground during visions.

“But--” Enid started and Wednesday stepped forward.

“Yoko has been a worthy ally to help me understand my… feelings that pertain to you. She was coaching me on how to do this officially,” Wednesday revealed.

Suddenly, Enid wanted the ground to swallow her whole. That must be what Divina meant when she knew what they were doing. “Oh…”

“I can assure you,” Wednesday told her seriously. “The only courting I wish to do is with you… that is if you wish to as well.”

Enid felt her face grow warm as she suddenly realized that Wednesday was officially asking her on a date. “Yes!” she squeaked out before clearing her throat and continuing on more calmly. “Yes, I’d really like that.”

Wednesday looked around as if slightly nervous before she extended her hand out. Enid rested the urge to shriek in joy and reached out to gently grasp it.

It was going to be the greatest night of her life.
