At Her Side

Summary:

Maya and Mia spend most of their time apart, making the moments they're together all the more precious.

Notes:

Work Text:

Each time Mia came back at the Fey household was a big event. Those moments were far and in between so Maya cherished them close to her heart and took all the possible efforts—the kind her aunt would have loved to see her show more of in her studies—to make them memorable.

It hadn't always been that way. For a brief period of time, Maya had resented Mia's choice to leave and become an attorney. She had never particularly wanted to become the Kurain Master; such a huge role seemed like way too much work to a young teen like her and though she could understand why Mia wished to avoid conflict between them, it felt like she was pushing some big responsibilities on her she hadn't asked for.

That and Mia's studies meant Maya was left alone behind, enduring this loneliness and distance between them that tore painfully at her chest, as if she had been abandoned.

But she loved her big sister way too much to resent her for long. Once she had seen how happy Mia looked when talking of what she was learning about the justice system and what her future goals were, her bitterness melted into pure joy. She wished she could watch that beautiful smile of hers forever and ever.

Similarly, after hearing more about the history of the Fey clan, thanks to aunt Morgan trying to drill the importance of her duties into her, she could better understand the harshness her sister was facing by defying those traditions to protect her, and her admiration for her grew tenfolds. She was so strong and brave, fighting all alone against those ancient institutions and the injustices they hid. Maya really couldn't have seen herself being able to do as much if faced with such complex choices.

That was why she wanted Mia to feel good and safe everytime she came back, to help her in any way she could in return.

A good feast with all of Mia's favorite foods—and some of Maya's—was a must. After that, once they would be full and tired, they'd go to her bedroom and chat while she gave Mia a massage to get her rid of the soreness from work.

It felt really good to watch Mia relax into her touch and see all the stress disappear bit by bit from her face as she patiently and firmly stroked her shoulders and neck. Maya was used to the sensation of her skin under her fingers but somehow it still brought shivers to her spine at times, the kind that both felt nice and shameful.

"You've become really good at this," Mia sighed into her arms and Maya beamed with pleasure.

"Yay, more praise! Keep it going, sis!"

She had already received some when she had told Mia of her latest advancements in mastering the Kurain techniques. Of course, this was still pretty basic stuff she was learning, nothing as impressive as what Mia had achieved with getting her own law agency and even someone training under her now. Maya was so proud of her sister that it often was hard to really find the words to express to what extent.

Her smarts weren't the only thing she admired about her, Mia also looked drop-dead gorgeous and Maya wished she could convey that to her in a good way.

One time that she had commented on how hot she was, Mia had blushed and almost lost her words, which had both made Maya giddy and embarrassed at the same time. Because whenever she had seen other people commenting on Mia's beauty, her sister had always kept her cool in answering the compliments and she couldn't tell if it meant Mia had been more touched by her appreciation or if she had messed up her compliment and made her uncomfortable.

Remembering this, her hands turned a bit sweaty and her hold on Mia's shoulders got more clumsy. Intimacy between them was usually as natural as the beating of her heart yet it also sometimes cut her breath away the very next moment. The sweet smell and texture of her sister's hair tickled Maya's fingers like a flame when she stroked her nape to loosen the muscles there, speeding up her heartbeat. She wondered how soft they would feel against her lips.

Quickly moving down Mia's back, Maya massaged her hips with more hurry than needed while trying to not let her mind drifts towards dirty thoughts, like how close her bottom was if she let her hands wander lower than necessary along her backbone.

She ended up botching the last part of the massage, too fretful to really stick to one place. Thankfully, Mia was already pretty relaxed and didn't seem to mind. She hugged her close once she was done and Maya let her head rest over her shoulder. She stole a peek towards her chest, so large and soft-looking from this angle, before quickly looking away, ashamed.

They chatted about this and that, like what Mia had been doing at work, which Steel Samurai episodes Maya had watched recently and what they might do the next time Maya went to see her in the city.

Lately, even more so than Mia coming back there, Maya loved meeting her in town. Perhaps it was mean for dear Pearly who kept her such nice company and towards Aunt Morgan who took care of her, but the charms of the city were too strong for her to not daydream about how much she would enjoy spending more alone time with her sister there. Those weekends were so unlike her daily life; they felt like an escapade, an adventure.

On most occasions they would go to the movies, to restaurants or fast food joints, to game centers and theme parks but also to exhibitions that might have felt terribly boring if she had been by herself but were thrilling together with Mia. Those were all the kinds of exciting things Maya imagined mature and cool city-dwellers would do in the weekend or during their vacations.

And also, she couldn't help but notice, those places were some pretty typical dating spots.

Obviously, the activities they did were enjoyed by plenty of friends and families but given that it was only the two of them there, Mia and her, it didn't feel quite the same. She got all tickly during those outings whenever she saw a couple nearby, snuggling with their fingers interlocked or kissing, while she was hanging at Mia's side herself, her arm in hers or holding her hand.

Last summer, they had taken a little trip to a traditional ryokan for a change and she had felt it there too. When they went to sleep with their futons right next to each other, even though they also placed them like that at home, it made her heartbeat go crazy. Maya had wondered if she had found herself in one of those elopement movies and dramas aunt Morgan sometimes watched. The idea of them being like secret sweethearts, sleeping together in the ways lovers did, was purely ridiculous. Yet she eagerly indulged in the happy diziness the thought caused, like fluffy cotton candy was filling her from head to toe.

Another time, at a restaurant, they even took a temporary special couple dessert that had caught Maya's attention. Mia's cheeks had been a bit red and her voice faltered ever so slightly when ordering it. Once the waiter left to go get their meal, she sent a little grin and wink to her, as if amused of having so easily fooled them about the truth of their relationship. She had probably thought Maya simply wanted the dessert because of her sweet tooth and it would have been lying to say that wasn't part of it. But sharing the pink frosted, heart-shaped cake with Mia caused chills to shake her whole body even before she got to the vanilla ice cream. And if she had felt she was in heaven, it hadn't just been because of how delicious the dessert was.

Maya giggled in Mia's shoulder, remembering all this. Her mouth brushed against her clothes, making her stop mid-movement. This couldn't really be called a kiss but she was touching her with her lips all the same and she wanted to enjoy the happy accident just a bit more. Telling Mia she loved her in moments like the cake date was easy, she just had to pull her cute little sister tone and the words came out without thinking. It was much harder in calm, intimate moments like this one. She tried out the sentence in her mind a few times but was afraid it would come out desperate and uneasy.

She wasn't as good as her sister at reading people and Mia could be pretty guarded on top of that. Sometimes she thought she would understand, sometimes she even hoped her sister would return her complicated feelings but she didn't dare to stray from the happy safe place they were at. Not too far and not too close.

"There's going to be an event around your favorite show soon. The Steel Samurai Festival, they called it. Perhaps we could go there next time?"

Mia's suggestion immediately shook her out of her reverie.

"Oh yes, let's go, let's go! Do you think a lot of the actors might be there? I hope they have merch, we don't have anything at all around here and I could buy some for Pearly as a souvenir! Will there be fans cosplaying? Hey, should we do it too, sis?"

She had pulled away from Mia's shoulder, now standing upright and positively vibrating with excitement. If she had to choose a character for her sister to cosplay as, the Cobalt Kunoichi was for sure the best pick. Although a secondary character, she was well loved by fans for her mysterious backstory, badass entrances to help the Steel Samurai in times of need and not the least for her sexy costume. Just thinking of Mia wearing it made Maya blush, she would look both so incredibly hot and cool.

"Well, I don't know about being able to cosplay, but we definitely need to bring Pearl something back, you're right. I'll see with Auntie about what days you might be free and take care of the ticket reservation, okay?"

Mia looked a bit overwhelmed but pleased by her fannish eagernes. She laughed with her when Maya hugged her.

After that, they took care of setting their futons, right next to each other as always, and they lay down in bed for the night. Except Maya was still too excited to feel sleep coming. She turned around under her covers, in between listening to Mia's calm breathing. I love you so much, sis, she thought in her head as strongly as she could, like she was trying to send the message to her telepathically. The Fey were only known for their channeling powers but who knew, one could hope they had other esper abilities.

Maybe it was for the best that Mia didn't seem to be into the idea of cosplaying, she reconsidered, because a lot of people would most likely ogle her for the whole time and Maya wasn't too fond of that idea, even though it made sense they'd do that given how pretty and hot Mia was and she had no right to keep her to herself. Still, her sister had invited her so maybe she could get a bit jealous, given this was supposed to be their alone time.

But those thoughts brought back the kind of sad realization she often had on those nights together, that Mia would soon go back to the busy life of the city, spending her days away from her and with so many people she didn't know. Thankfully, right now, she was too excited about their next date to think too much about it.

After a long time of imagining all the possible things they might do at the event, Maya finally fell asleep.

In her dreams, she saw Mia in the Cobalt Kunoichi's outfit, fighting against the Evil Magistrate's goons. Maya herself was dressed as the even more minor character of the Bamboo Apprentice, who was linked to the mysterious past of the Cobalt Kunoichi and often followed her around.

Gathering her courage by striking a Steel Samurai pose, Maya jumped into the fray to help her sister and be by her side, like she had always wanted.
