Work Text:
Vampires don't exist.
Yeonjun knows that for sure. Why? Because it's just a stupid fairy tale, a story, a myth or legend. Even if they did exist. They don't now. And probably never had.
He's telling himself all this because he can't wrap his head around what had just happened.
It was most likely a story that parents made to scare their misbehaving children who wandered off past bedtime. Yeonjun knows that because his mother had done something similar which had lead to him believing it until he was a teen.
He now lives his ordinary daily life of heading to work as a dance instructor, catching up with friends and coming back to an empty home.
That was months ago before Soobin entered his life.
His very, very sweet boyfriend.
Soobin was something out of a book. A prince out of a fairy tale. His appearance was charming. Tall, broad, handsome and dimples. God—Yeonjun was a sucker for his dimples. But it was also his personality.
Soobin was attentive, relaxed, quiet, well mannered and thoughtful. Incredibly selfless too. He'd give so much to others without expecting anything in return which others took advantage of. Yeonjun almost hunted down those meanies before Soobin told him not too.
That was another thing.
There was something about Soobin that controlled Yeonjun so easily. Making him limp in his arms like a cat. Don't get him wrong. Soobin isn't manipulative but there was a vibe, an aura if you know what he means. Something about Soobin that controlled the tension around everyone.
There were certain animals too that adored Soobin like Yeonjun did and some that cowered away in the corner of their cage when they visited pet shops or zoos.
But of course Yeonjun put all the 'off' things about Soobin to the side because Soobin was so perfect. He took care of Yeonjun so well and always showered him with love and affection. He was something that shouldn't exist in this world because where were the others like him?
Soobin doesn't leave the house during the day. There was a reason though that Yeonjun came up with.
It's simply because Soobin was introverted and would like to make humanly social contact as little as possible. He only goes out on certain occasions where he can't resist Yeonjun's whining to go out with him. Even then, he would be completely covered from head to toe, except when the day was cloudy.
His group of friends joked about Soobin being a vampire when they first met him. It immediately made Soobin freeze up and tense at the joke and Yeonjun was quick to notice this and defended his boyfriend.
Of course, even Yeonjun had thoughts similar to this.
When they first met, which was through a friend, Kai. Sweet Kai that Yeonjun loved to baby. He was too cute, according to the dark haired male.
He had heard many things about this other hyung that Kai loved. It brewed jealousy in Yeonjun but he was happy that Kai had someone else to lean on.
Eventually when he had enough of hearing all these stories about this other hyung, he demanded to meet him. He clearly saw Kai's reaction of hesitance and stumbling of words when trying to lie to his face.
Yeonjun may be a bad liar but he knows when someone's lying to him.
When the dragging of excuses continued, Yeonjun finally had enough. He did something against his morals.
He went through Kai's phone to find Soobin's contact, which wasn't hard enough. 'Soob Hyung,' was pinned at the very top of his contacts with many many emojis. There was one certain one that threw him off though, but he ignored it.
After scribbling the number roughly on his palm, he waited for Kai to return from the bathroom.
Believe it or not, he shortly met up with Soobin the same day. When Yeonjun contacted him, he knew that there was a huge chance that Soobin would not agree but it seems that he had mutual thoughts about him. Kai blabbered about each hyung to the other, so the other agreed.
So there was Yeonjun, sitting down, crossed legged at the coffee table at the back, in the corner of the cafe. He was told by Soobin, that he had blonde hair so it would be easy to recognise him. Damn hell. He was incredibly recognisable. Why?
Because when the door bell chimed, Yeonjun looked up to see the most hottest man ever. Dressed in a chic black suit with golden buttons, blonde hair slicked back in gel and sharp chiselled facial features were carved beautifully.
Yeonjun's mouth pooled with drool but he slapped himself out of his thoughts as Soobin made his way over.
The first thought in his head after seeing Soobin close up was that he looked like a vampire. Something like eternal youth ringed through his ears.
After somewhat getting addicted to Soobin with endless thoughts in his head, they continued meeting up and it now had lead to them being in a 4 month relationship. Where Yeonjun has moved into Soobin's large apartment so they wouldn't be separated for any longer unless necessary(like going to work).
Soobin works as a doctor. A cardiothoracic surgeon to be more specific. He loves flexing this about his godlike boyfriend and Soobin doesn't mind, often hiding himself in embarrassment. His boyfriend is busy so Yeonjun tries his best to understand when Soobin is gone for long periods.
Yeonjun is aware that Soobin loves Yeonjun's passion for the things he loves doing like dance, music and other hobbies. Soobin doesn't forget to remind Yeonjun that he's cute even when he looks ridiculous and is sweating after many dance classes.
Their relationship is sickening sweet. It's incredibly perfect. So where did it go wrong?
Yeonjun had just gotten back home. His last few night classes of the day had been cancelled due to the rainy weather so he decided to surprise Soobin of his arrival. He had quickly drove to the store before the storm hit to buy some groceries needed for his planning of dinner.
He was buzzing with excitement as he thought about Soobin's reaction. Final decision between Soobin hugging him as soon as Yeonjun walks in(because Soobin has this weird 6th sense of knowing where Yeonjun is whenever and wherever) or is actually surprising Yeonjun with something else on his day off.
Nothing could've prepared him for what was coming.
He was impatiently waiting in their building elevator as he tapped away on his phone. Something was a bit weird. Soobin and Kai weren't replying to his messages. It was odd since those two usually replied immediately or in less than 5 minutes.
One, because Kai was addicted to his phone. Two, Soobin always took the time to reply to Yeonjun(and only Yeonjun)even when he was busy. But maybe Yeonjun was just overthinking it.
When he stepped out of the elevator, he had to remind himself to not run over to their apartment door and create noise. So as quiet as he could, he muted to sound of their keypad as he typed in the apartment code and pushed onto the door slightly to muffle as much unnecessary sound.
He was met with darkness. Seemed like all the lights have been turned off. Strange. But not unusual. His arm movements flailed around the cold air as he tried to make his way to the kitchen to set the groceries down. After the heavy weight had been removed, Yeonjun turned on the flash of his phone and cautiously made his way to his and Soobin's shared bedroom.
He wasn't going to gaslight himself but something was off. Goosebumps sprouted from Yeonjun's once smooth skin and he felt himself growing uncomfortable the more closer he was to the bedroom.
He switched on the lights but was met with no one. Where was Soobin?
Yeonjun flinched at the sudden sound coming from the connected bathroom to the room. He stepped closer and peered in through the crack of the door.
He gasped silently. Clutching both of his hands to his mouth after the sound escaped. His phone dropped to the phone and the door creaked further open.
There stood Soobin, his side profile clear to Yeonjun as the taller male used the sink. But there was blood. So, so much of it. Evidence of it staining the corners of Soobin's mouth, his chin, to his dimples.
Yeonjun heavily shook as Soobin looked at him. Red eyes with insatiable hunger stared at him. That wasn't Soobin. Where was his Soobin?
When Soobin reached out to Yeonjun with a look of fear, Yeonjun shook his head and stepped back. He trembled further. What was Soobin?
His instincts screamed at him to get out of there. There was danger in the room. With Soobin. He had to leave now. So he did. He turned and ran for it.
By the time Yeonjun had left the apartment, he knew Soobin was chasing after him and he begged that he was fast enough for his non-working out boyfriend—if he still was to not catch up to him.
He should've known by the time he reached the floor's stairs(because the elevator was taking too long)Soobin was already holding onto him from behind.
If it weren't for the situation that Yeonjun was in right now. He'd scold Soobin gently about having some decency of not walking with food on his face. Food—Blood really. Yeonjun felt sick.
He couldn't look at Soobin. Even his touch on his wrist made him freeze up.
"Yeonjun, I—Please let me explain myself." Soobin begged. His voice was strained and Yeonjun fucking hoped it wasn't because he still needed to drink...
He pulled himself away from Soobin and held himself as a form of protection as he backed away. He knew that he was hurting Soobin but he couldn't stay with him any longer.
"D-Don't follow me, p-please. Soobinnie—Soobin-ah, I-I can't do this right now." So he again attempted to leave and was met with relief but sadness when Soobin obeyed his wishes to leave him alone.
So now, here he was; walking in the rain with no place to go. His plan was to just walk endlessly in the rain. Which was stupid because it's cold too and he's crying shamelessly as he hugs himself.
He's ignored the worried and confused looks strangers are throwing at him because he's lost. At a very low point.
He's trying to wrap his head around it because what else can explain the red eyes, fast speed, 6th sense, Soobin not ageing and the blood other than the fact that Soobin is a vampire.
Yeonjun feels himself sick again so he squeezes his eyes and feels the rain drops on his skin. He's drenched with water.
He stops by a bench in front of a convenience store and sits down shivering. He doesn't know how long he's been sitting out in the raining cold until suddenly the rain stops. Which is odd because the rain is still pouring around him.
He looks up and is met with the dark red of an umbrella. He cries more, enough with red.
It's Kai. Holding the umbrella with a remorse and guilty face, "Hey Hyung—" Yeonjun cut him off by embracing him. He knows Kai won't care that he's getting wet because he's sweet like that. Just like Soobin—
"Do you want to come to my place hyung?" He asks softly when Yeonjun's crying eases and all Yeonjun can do is nod helplessly as a reply.
He's hiccupping by the time Kai had buckled Yeonjun in, in his car. He wants to apologise for getting the seat wet but his words are stuck in his throat. He tears up more as he realises how shameful he is at the moment, his dongsaeng having to help him out.
Yeonjun has always been a prideful man, especially as a hyung that many look up to. He knows none of them care about this and that it's okay to turn to them for help, as Soobin tells him this regularly—
Kai whispers softly to him that they've arrived and he gently pulls Yeonjun out of the seat, not before removing his outer jacket to place on his shivering shoulders. Yeonjun smiles bitterly to himself as he follows Kai into his apartment.
It's small but definitely cosy, giving a welcoming home vibe.
A whimper escapes his lips because he's already missing home. Home which is where Soobin is—
"Hyung, come sit here. I'll go make you something warm." Kai gives his best comforting smile but it's failing in the moment. Yeonjun nods and hugs his knees on the couch, feeling much warmer when he realises that the heaters were on.
Kai shortly comes back with hot chocolate and Yeonjun genuinely smiles. He tries to ignore Kai's gaze on him as he drinks his share. When he's had enough, Kai immediately jumps in to take away his cup. He really appreciates Kai for what he's doing.
When he comes back, there's silence. They're both ignoring the elephant in the room. Kai knows. Yeonjun knows this. He's connected enough dots from just tonight alone to know enough.
"Hyung...Soobin-hyung told me about...what happened earlier tonight. I—He told me to get you because it was raining and he didn't know where you were even planning to go." Kai explains the best he could without offending Yeonjun.
The said man shakes with empty laughter and it scares the poor younger boy at the reaction. It’s funny, for Yeonjun because Soobin already knows everything about him in the short 4 months.
He knows that Yeonjun is the only child in his family and that his parent's decided to move to the country for a peaceful life 2 years ago. He knows that Yeonjun gets sick easily after getting in the rain. He knows that Yeonjun needs time whenever he's recovering.
Especially from this, because what he doesn't know is if Yeonjun will ever recover from this.
Yeonjun is grateful for Kai. For what he's doing now and all the times before. "Kai tell me." Kai looks up from the floor to Yeonjun, eyes telling that he's listening. "Have you always known. And since when?" Again, it's quiet.
Kai breaks the silence, "You already know that Soobin-hyung and I have already known each other for a long time. But I haven't told you exactly how long." Kai bites his lip, unsure of what to come from Yeonjun, who was noticeably unpredictable. He continues, "I've known since we first met. 60 years ago."
Kai winces and closes his eyes. He can't face Yeonjun's reaction. He can't lose Yeonjun either. But when there's nothing coming from the older—younger male, he opens his eyes.
Yeonjun is staring blankly at him. He's shocked and doesn't know what to think. So Kai is telling him that there is more of Soobin...that he's also a vampire. That they've been alive for more than 6 decades and that Yeonjun isn't dreaming.
His long years of friendship with Kai since University days has been hiding a lie.
He's shaking as he again, sprints for the door but Kai gets there before him. There's a guilty look on his face again and Yeonjun understands why this time. Kai is holding him hostage and Yeonjun's body is quick to alarm him.
He feels his knees weaken and they buckle against his will. He's falling to the ground with pleading hands. He begs Kai to not hurt him. To not kill him.
Kai is hurt by all this because how could Yeonjun think of him in this way. He would never hurt Yeonjun and Soobin wouldn't either. He sees all the fear and instinct to escape in Yeonjun's glistening eyes.
But he promised Soobin that he would keep Yeonjun safe until Soobin finds a way to fix all this.
"Hyung...I'm sorry but you can't leave." He attempted to get down to Yeonjun's level but the smaller male is backing away, shaking his head.
"N-No...Kai please no. I-I can't stay here either. Please." Again, he's pleading for his life with everything he has. He's unaware that the man standing in front of him was someone he once babied and spent a portion of his life with.
"YEONJUN CAN YOU FUCKING LISTEN?!"
Yeonjun stills and more tears rise. Kai's had enough. He doesn't have as much patience as Soobin but he really needs Yeonjun to listen.
He didn't want to but he ended up using a last resort of putting Yeonjun under his control. He's still giving Yeonjun access of his awareness but he's stopped Yeonjun from moving.
"Hyung, I'm going to explain everything to you. So please. Try to understand." He picks up Yeonjun and lays him comfortably in his bed. "Yes, Soobin-hyung and I are vampires and there's so much of us still out there, hiding amongst humans. But we're not bad. We've learned to control our urges to feed and have found other ways to access blood. From animals and some of us taking the jobs as doctors to feed our packs." He sees Yeonjun freeze at this but he continues, "It was never in our plans to meet you. Our pack only decides mutually if we were to make contact with a human. I'm saying that all my and Soobin-hyung's friends that have soon become yours, are all vampires."
Yeonjun is thrashing against Kai's control and he gives a small smile. One thing that the entire pack loved about Yeonjun was that he was incredibly strong. Mentally and emotionally strong which was unlike any other human. It was something that fascinated Soobin which made him keep coming to Yeonjun.
"It was purely coincidental that we had become friends and the pack had agreed that as long as no one else other than the one's that had already made contact with you were to be around you, everything could go as it continued. It was why I could never let you and Soobin-hyung meet and hyung, I really don't appreciate you sneaking through my phone." Kai sighs and playfully glares at Yeonjun who's seems to try and rebuke him regardless of the situation. "But of course Soobin had mutually agreed to meet up with you and chaos had unleashed upon itself. Eventually though, the whole pack came to love you and you got involved."
It wasn't hard to love Yeonjun. He was so special and vampires liked things that were special.
"You know when Soobin disappears for a period of time. Usually for 'work'." Kai watches Yeonjun's eyes squint at this, "It's for feeding. We have to feed for a certain amount of time that varies for each vampire with their intake of blood. For example, the more you've drunk over your long lifetime, the less amount of time you have to feed for. To tell you this, Soobin hyung is over four hundred years old. I'm a little over two hundred." He shrugs. "My feeding hasn't started yet but you came in unsuspectingly while Soobin was feeding. Vampire's high senses are completely blocked out when we're feeding so you caught Soobin during his prime time. So...do you understand now, Yeonjun?" He drops the formalities and waits for Yeonjun's response after removing all control over him.
Yeonjun sits up and hugs one of Kai's many plushies. He's taking it all in and to be fair, he's not surprised. It's like he's always known this whole time but refused to acknowledge it. He knows that the universe has practically been screaming at him with so many signs that vampires do exist and his whole life is surrounded by them.
At the thought and explanation with all this, he comes to the term that he misses Soobin. Poor sweet Soobin that's waiting worryingly at home for him. An image of a lonely puppy comes into his head and he realises that maybe running out on Soobin wasn't the best idea.
But could you blame him?
He also comes to the better conclusion that if these vampires aren't really doing any harm to humans and are only feeding to survive. It wouldn't hurt him. He turns to face Kai who is fidgeting and he smiles at the nervous boy.
"Kai-ya." Kai watches carefully and doesn't dare move. "Thank you really. For explaining all this even with me being stubborn." Kai's eyes light up and he runs over to hug Yeonjun.
"I was really scared. I really thought I was going to lose you." Kai mumbles against Yeonjun's damp clothes, he pulls away and grins.
"You can't get rid of me that easily." Yeonjun ruffles his hair with the same affection he's always given Kai.
Kai smirks, "You know. Soobin-hyung is probably still thinking that he's going to lose you—"
"Shit! Okay! Kai, I'm going to go now!" He waves Kai goodbye and is already running out of the apartment, forgetting that he has no car with him. Which was a dumb idea because now he's running the whole way to his apartment. 15-20 minutes by car. Almost 30 by walking.
He's panting by the time he sees the large building and he thinks he's not going to make it with how exhausted he is. With the rain too that Yeonjun can feel himself getting sicker by the minute. He's resting by putting his hands on his knees, hunched over the path near a tree.
When he looks up he sees Soobin standing outside of the building in the rain in the far distance.
Yeonjun feels really vulnerable and he starts to tear up at the sight of Soobin hesitating if he should walk over to his boyfriend.
When Yeonjun collapses to the ground, Soobin no longer hesitates and he basically teleports over to where he is due to how fast he's running.
He gently grabs Yeonjun by his forearms and hoists him up on one knee, as the other kneels into the ground.
"Yeonjun-ah, I'm so so sorry—" Soobin begins to speak with his voice shaking but Yeonjun cuts him off.
He smiles calmly and cups Soobin's face with one hand, "Soobin. Don't apologise. It's not your fault, never. What you did back there in our bathroom...it's something you can't control or choose. I'm the one who is sorry for walking out on you like that. I...That was wrong of me to do that and I ask you that take me back in." Yeonjun is looking at Soobin and he recognises this Soobin. His Soobin with warm brown eyes and selfless heart.
"Hyung...I guess Kai literally told you everything when I said I'd fix it. It's okay hyung. I understand. Who wouldn't walk out on me covered in blood? It's not wrong what you did and you never left, silly." Soobin begins to tear up and he buries his face in Yeonjun's neck, holding him tight after horrible thoughts of him leaving.
Yeonjun begins to cough before a stupid smile appears, "Can we go cuddle? Please." He asks through pouted lips and who is Soobin to say no?
He skilfully slides his hands under Yeonjun's familiar thighs and back as he lifts him up with his full height. Yeonjun giggles before snuggling into Soobin's chest and Soobin takes him inside their apartment.
All they could do is run back to each other.
"Fucking bullshit that vampires don't exist because what the fuck is this then?" —Choi Yeonjun
