Chapter Text
"Do you have to leave?" Liam asked for what felt like the hundredth time. He didn't want Scott to leave, not yet... He still needed him.
Scott laughed. "Yes Liam," he turned to meet his beta’s worried blue eyes. "You can handle it, I know you can." He was trying to reassure him, which Liam appreciated.
"What if Alec doesn't want help? What if Monroe returns?" Liam asked, his heartbeat increasing and his voice cracking. A million worries running through his head, a million things that could go wrong.
"Then you will handle it," Scott said, packing the rest of his clothes into a suitcase.
"I can't handle that!" Liam protested.
Scott stopped what he was doing and turned to Liam, ushering for him to sit on Scott's bed, he then took a seat beside him. “You can handle it Liam, I wouldn't be leaving if I didn't think you could." Liam shook his head in denial. "You're stronger than you think and smarter than you give yourself credit for, plus your pack will help you," Scott stated making Liam scoff.
"Help me? My pack consists of a new wolf, a chameleon, and a human– not exactly great for fighting!" Liam snapped, only further proving his point.
Scott couldn't help the small smile that appeared on his face. “You know, there's a reason I never accepted Theo into my pack..." he said calmly, Liam turned to face him with a frown.
"Because you still hate him?" The beta asked.
Scott let out a dry laugh. "Well kind of, but no." He placed his hand on Liam's shoulder before continuing, "because he's a part of your pack."
Liam’s face contorted. “What– No."
Scott simply smiled. "Wherever you go, he goes. If you're in trouble he's always there… He reminds me of Isaac," he admitted while looking to the side. Liam knew Isaac had been Derek's beta but he was in Scott's pack, so he kind of understood where his alpha was coming from.
"So, you think Theo is a part of my pack? The same Theo who killed you that we then sent to hell?" Liam asked defensively.
Scott laughed. "The same Theo who saved your ass more than once and the same Theo who took away Gabe's pain"
Liam bit his lip and looked down. "He left town," he admitted.
"How do you know?" Scott asked.
"After we left the hospital, he dropped me off at home and he said he was leaving, I didn't stop him..."
"If you call him, I guarantee he'll come back." Scott turned and continued packing the rest of his bags, making sure he didn’t forget anything.
Liam nodded, "I guess."
Scott zipped up his suitcase and Liam helped him by grabbing the other two bags he had packed. Standing at the end of the stairs was Melissa, Chris, Stilinski and Deaton. Scott couldn't help the shy smile that appeared on his face as he bowed his head and Melissa brought him in for a hug. "I'm so proud of you," she smiled.
Scott then turned to Deaton who brought him in for a hug. "You'll always be able to work with me," he stated.
"I'm so happy for you, she would be too." Chris gave a fond smile before pulling Scott in for a hug and pulling apart to pat him on the back. Always being his mentor and after losing Allison, Chris had always leaned on Scott, and he had been always willing to help him.
Noah brought him in for a warm hug. "I'm so proud of you kiddo," he said and Scott melted into the hug, Noah had always been like a father to him, especially after the way his dad had treated him all those years ago. Noah was like the father he never had and Stiles was the brother he always needed.
Scott turned to Liam and placed a hand on his shoulder, Liam looked down nervously. "Liam's in charge while I'm gone," Scott announced, although Liam's confidence definitely was lacking, the beta still nodded "remember, these guys will help you."
Liam shyly smiled at them. "You'll be fine" Noah said reassuringly, patting Liam's back.
"If you need me, I'm only a call away." Scott promised and Liam nodded.
"Enjoy college," the beta said. "You'll do great." Scott laughed at Liam's awkwardness. He had faith in Liam though, he trusted him to protect the town.
Carrying the bags to Stiles's jeep Liam placed them in the back seat. "I'm proud of you Liam," Scott turned to face his beta. "You've really grown up so much and I know Beacon Hill’s is safe in your hands." No pressure Liam thought, but nodded regardless.
Scott brought him in for a hug. Liam was like the little brother he never had, he knew when he bit him that Liam would become his responsibility. But now to see Liam grown up as an adult, he knew Liam could handle himself and was ready for Scott to leave.
"You'll come back on break right?" Liam asked as Scott got into the jeep, "and holidays?" Scott laughed.
"Yes, Liam I'll visit," Scott turned the key, surprisingly the jeep started without any troubles."Here's hoping this doesn't break down on the drive." Scott laughed before adding, "call Theo."
With that he was driving down the road, waving his hand out the window as Liam watched. He then grabbed his phone from his pocket and went through his contacts. Grimacing when he saw Theo's name. It reminded him of the day he called Theo to help him with the plan at the zoo. Taking a deep breath, he sat in Scott's driveway and pressed the call button, chills running down his spine when it began to rang. "Liam?" A musky voice answered.
"Theo?" The beta replied in a surprised tone.
"Well, yeah?" Theo replied, annoyance clear in his voice.
"Did I wake you?" Liam asked with a frown.
"Yes, but it's fine, what do you want?" The chimera asked. Liam looked up at the night sky, the stars and the crescent moon were bright "Liam?" Theo said, breaking Liam from his thoughts.
"Scott just left for college," Liam said, immediately wanting to smack himself in the face. He could feel Theo's confusion through the phone.
"Ok...?" Theo replied.
"I mean he's gone, so I'm in charge now." Liam stated, digging himself a bigger hole.
Theo laughed. " Awh , is the little beta all alone?" He mocked, making Liam roll his eyes.
"Shut up," he let out a small laugh. Bringing his knees to his chest, he sighed. "What are you doing?" Liam asked.
"I was laying down sleeping until you rang me, remember?" Theo replied, his tone was all but amused.
"Oh yeah–right...Are you coming back to Beacon Hills?" The beta asked.
"Now why would I return to a place I'm not wanted?" Theo asked.
"You are wanted though?" Liam replied. Theo clicked his tongue.
"Who by? Because last time I was there I still wasn't accepted" Theo snapped.
Liam winced at his words "I want you here?" he said hoping that would convince Theo to return.
"So, now that your alpha left, you want me there?" Theo asked curiously.
"No, I want you here because it's my pack now. I make the calls and I want you to be a part of that." Liam still lacked confidence as he spoke.
"I told you Liam, I'm not dying for you."
"I'm not dying for you either and I don't want you to, I just want you to be a part of my pack..." Liam replied, sick of the back and forth. "Are you coming or not?"
"Fine."
Liam had to bite his tongue to stop himself from letting out any noise. "Okay!" He said, still too happily.
Theo sighed. "I'll be there tomorrow. Goodnight, Liam." he said, hanging up before Liam had the chance to reply. Liam slipped his phone into his back pocket and looked up at the stars, the cold air nipping at him as the moon flowed down on his tanned skin. Only three days until the full moon… Now that Alec was his responsibility, this was going to be more difficult then he had originally thought.
Catching the sound of leaves crumpling, Liam whipped his head around. Seeing a shadowy figure in the distance, he slowly stood up. "Hello?" He called out, starting to approach the figure. It stood tall and its shoulders appeared broad. Despite his fear Liam continued walking towards it and in the blink of an eye it was gone… was my mind playing tricks on me? Liam shook his head and blinked several times trying to find the figure again.
Maybe I'm just tired?
Liam gave the area another look then turned to his car, looking up and giving the moon another glance before getting inside of it. He found himself driving home. The drive itself was nice and calm, until he saw a figure in the distance, in the middle of the road. Slowing his car down he switched on his high beams, desperately hoping to see more of the mysterious figure. "What the fuck..."
All he could see was darkness. The figure was gone.
Liam slowly drove forward, his anxiety rising as he waited for something to jump out at him. But it never came. All that followed were the million thoughts running through his head as he continued to drive home. Only once he arrived home did Liam step out of the car, hearing a crunch under his foot, he looked down. Seeing a scrunched-up piece of paper he frowned, picking it up he unfolded the paper.
Brows furrowed as he read it. Go Away it read. What the fuck… Scott's been gone all of three hours and I've already got some weird creature after us?
Liam shoved the piece of paper into his pocket and looked around, upon seeing nothing, he unlocked the door to his house. His mum and stepdad were nowhere to be seen, probably at work. As always.
Entering his bedroom he placed the piece of paper on his table, what the fuck does this mean? Liam pinched the bridge of his nose, taking out his phone and taking a photo of it. He opened his contacts to Mason, sending him a photo of the paper.
Any idea on what this could mean? The text read, hitting send he waited. Taking his shirt off, he threw it to the corner of his room before sliding his jeans down. His phone buzzed and he reached to grab it.
What? Mason's text read.
Liam's frown deepened. The paper, what does it mean? Liam texted back while shaking his head.
It's a piece of paper dude? It was from a tree? What do you mean?
You don't see writing on it?
No? Mason replied.
Liam felt the air being sucked out of him, I'm definitely losing my mind. Sitting on the edge of his bed, he ran shaky hands through his brown hair. Ok all good, Liam texted back before placing his phone down. I just need a good night's sleep. He knew Mason would surely question him tomorrow, it was their first day back as seniors and he wasn't exactly excited to go back. Everyone knew their secret now; some were accepting while others were still set in their ways that they were monsters.
Despite saving Beacon hill at numerous times from the supernatural dangers of the world. Liam couldn't help but feel defeated, it was only going to be harder now that everyone knew. Especially if humans tried to get involved in trying to protect beacon hills, Liam could only protect so many people at once.
It was bad enough that Mason had weaselled his way into the pack after knowing Liam was a werewolf. Liam always had this fear of Mason getting hurt, it would be his fault. Mason was his best friend, he refused to let anything happen to him.
Then there was Corey, it was true that the pair didn't get along immediately. Something about Corey had just annoyed Liam, it rubbed him the wrong way. But Mason explained Corey's home situation and how it wasn't exactly the best. Liam could definitely relate to that, so he tried to cut Corey some slack.
After months of working together he actually found Corey a lot more tolerable, he dared say that they had become friends. He knew how much Mason loved him and he knew that Corey would protect Mason, to the best of his abilities. So, the least Liam could do was get along with him for his best friend.
Then there was Hayden, his ex-girlfriend. She was on her way back upon Liam telling her Scott had left. Despite her coming out as lesbian, the two remained close. Liam still loved her just not in the same way he once did but he respected her telling him the truth.
Liam would always protect her, she was his first real love. Plus, he saw the way she would look at Gwen, how protective she had become of her in such a short time. He kind of suspected she was into girls, but she didn't expect her to be lesbian.
Either way he was happy that she would be returning to help. Gwen on the other hand was feisty, her and Liam would bicker all the time at lacrosse training. Since he was a co-captain with Nolan, he got to boss her around, which he did ever so tauntingly.
Last time he made her run a lap she smacked him with her lacrosse stick. Safe to say, even Coach was amused, even if he ended up with a temporary black eye. That girl had some fire in her that was for sure, no wonder Hayden fell for her.
Guess they both have a type…
Nolan on the other hand was Nolan. Despite their differences Liam tried his best to look past the whole hunters mess and see Nolan for who he truly was... which was a funny, anxious and sweet person. Although Liam was still a bit bitter about the whole beating him up in class situation...
He found himself hanging out with Nolan outside of school, running lacrosse practices together as co captains. It honestly hadn't been so bad, Nolan had tried to help with the supernatural problems but Liam would always push him away, he did the same thing to Gwen too.
He didn't want any more humans in his pack, it was too much risk. It was bad enough having Mason in the pack but he knew Corey would protect him. Having Nolan and Gwen would just make things much more complicated.
Speaking of complicated, now we move on to Brett.
Brett fucking Talbot, the same guy who used to torment Liam, antagonise him & harass him. The same guy who almost died at the hands of the hunters a few months ago. Luckily, Liam had been able to get to Brett and Lori before they could exit the tunnels.
They definitely would have been roadkill if he didn't.
Despite their differences and their troubled past, the pair had gotten along. During the whole Dread Doctor's situation, they protected one another and fought alongside each other. Despite Brett being cocky and annoying he knew deep down that he had the best intentions. He just had a funny way of showing it...
None the less Brett told Liam he would come and help him. Although he knew that would come with a lot of bickering he was also grateful for the extra support. Especially since Brett is a werewolf, a born one at that.
Liam also knew that Brett and Lori no longer had a pack. Due to the hunters killing Satomi, he knew that she had been like a mother to them. Helping Liam was probably their way of finding a pack, not that Liam minded. He genuinely liked Lori and he could tolerate Brett, for the most part.
Now Liam was left with the new sixteen-year-old werewolf that Scott had passed off to him. How the fuck was Liam supposed to help him? Liam wasn't exactly the perfect image of control. If Alec lost it and killed someone, that would also be on Liam too. That was something Liam definitely didn't want.
Alec was snappy though, he definitely had some feistiness to him. Which was going to make Liam's job a lot harder, but it also made him realise what he did to Scott. He wasn't exactly the easiest beta to teach and he surely hadn't made it easy on Scott at all.
Guess this was the universe's way of inflicting karma upon him, or Scott's. Regardless, Liam had promised Scott that he would protect him and teach Alec everything he could. Alec had only been a werewolf for three months before the hunters started chasing him. So he wasn't very experienced. Alec hadn't worked out all of his senses and abilities yet. That was something Liam was going to work on with him, but Alec was eager to learn though which made this a lot easier. His willingness would keep him alive.
We don't know when Monroe will strike again, let alone this new creature Liam saw… Unless he really was just losing his mind? Liam didn't know anymore, with the amount of shit he's seen it was hard to tell what was 'normal' and what was supernatural.
Speaking of losing his mind, Theo Raeken. The guy who manipulated Scott's pack & killed his alpha… The same Theo who risked his life numerous times to save Liam. The guy who fought with him at the hospital to take down the hunters. The same Theo who took Gabe's pain away...Liam wasn't even sure he could have taken Gabe's pain. Part of Liam felt bad for Gabe because of how he died. But he didn't feel bad that he was dead. There had been something dark about Gabe, he wasn't a victim.
Gabe had enjoyed causing chaos, he enjoyed killing werewolves and hurting people. Liam knew he did. The look in his eyes when he was hitting Liam didn't exactly scream empathy or guilt. He was getting a rush from it. He was sick and twisted and Liam didn't feel bad for him.
Liam knew he could fight, he could handle what was thrown at him. He wasn't entirely sure if he could handle watching anyone else die though. Almost losing Brett was scary enough, and he wasn't Brett's biggest fan.
What if he lost Mason? Or Hayden? Fuck, even Theo? He wasn't sure he'd be able to handle it. Scott had told him Liam could call him anytime and he'd come back. But Liam felt the need to prove himself, like he had this image he had to live up to.
He was a true alphas beta, he couldn't show his weaknesses, right? Being bitten at fifteen, Liam had to grow up quickly. He had held his dying girlfriend's body in his arms at sixteen years old and then he tried to kill Scott that same night...
Thankfully, Hayden had come back, as a chimera, but she still came back. Now she was stronger, Scott had finally listened to Liam's suggestion about biting her and she had become one of Scott's betas. Although, she never really acted like it.
Liam wondered if she had the same feeling he did about Scott? Liam could always tell if Scott was in danger or hurt. Hayden had always seemed neglectful of the pack and helping them. Only when Liam started to take over did she want to help. Deaton had once described the feeling as the bond between an alpha and beta. He had said that Scott could feel the same thing. They were always connected, which was good and bad. If Liam did get hurt while Scott was gone, he'd be sure Scott would blow up his phone.
Nonetheless Liam wasn't intending on getting hurt. He had been doing a few training sessions with Derek and although the ex-alpha was a lot stronger and smarter, Liam had managed to outsmart him a few times. Derek had even called Liam one of the strongest betas he knew.
Coming from Derek, that meant a lot.
Derek wasn't in Beacon Hill's anymore, but he assured Liam he would return if necessary and Liam could always call him. Stiles and Lydia had moved away to Romeburg which was a small town six hours away. Apparently, Stiles had an FBI job out there he had to move for. It worked out though because Lydia did a lot of her college work on her computer, considering how smart she was it wasn't difficult for her.
Malia and Scott were on and off though, Liam was honestly confused by their whole relationship. Malia was living four hours one way and Scott was four hours the other way. They agreed to keep in touch and claimed they were in love? Liam didn't bother trying to understand their complex and confusing relationship. What mattered to him was that they were happy and safe.
Liam was now sound asleep, the sound of the wind echoing in the background proving a soothing sound to him. Outside of his window however was the same figure from before, hiding behind a tree and looking through Liam's window...
