Scent of Silence

Summary:

Three years ago the world was turned upside down, but how did it affect those from living a normal life? And why is there ghost stories going around about someone capable of murdering a hoard without being seen by anyone, that's impossible, right?

Notes:

Recently started to revise this work and have removed content creators that I don't support the actions of and I don't believe should have any type of influence. The Tyler Catastrophe situation is what bought me back to this work after having abandoned it 3 years ago.

Chapter Text

Now usually you would think that a zombie apocalypse would only last a few months because it doesn't take long for a body to decompose, and I would agree with you in the fact it can take around 10 days for a body to decompose fully. And yes zombie movies do like to drag it out but they seemed to have be accurate with some things like the case of the end which was in fact an extremely similar occurrence to what happens in movies considering it started like a normal day, with people going off to school and work, and doing what they would do on any normal day.

It didn’t take long for the mystery virus to spread around infecting people everywhere. Where there was a crowded place the infection spread like wildfire. The virus spread too fast for the emergency evacuation centres to be set up for those that survived the first wave of infections. I was only 13 when it happened, I wasn’t anything special, just another kid lost in the system that would have probably aged out if it wasn’t for the fact that a couple was in the process of adopting me. I could have had a normal life with them if it weren’t for this stupid virus, I could have had a family, a loving mum and dad, brothers and sisters, someplace to call home.

The one of the only good things that it gave me at the start tho was that the family that was adopting me never got the chance to and I didn’t have to lose another family. Was it kind of depressing yes but at least I didn’t have to see people who I would have come to care about either get killed or kill themselves.

The other good thing was that the current home I was staying at was on a multiple acre farm, that farm gave me the skills that have helped me in my life since all this started, hunting, farming, caring for animals and most importantly survival.

The day that this all started was the one day I decided to stay on the farm instead of going into town with the others to get the groceries and other miscellaneous items, not one of them made it back that day or the days following. I decided to plant flowers and make little headstones for them to honour them even if they survived. I never got the chance to say a proper goodbye to any of them, just a quick one before they left. I did stay on that farm hoping that at least one of them would come back and join me so I wasn't lonely but even after 3 months out there alone no one did and I knew it was time to move on with the non perishable foods starting to decrease in numbers, it was time to finally find somewhere safer to stay.

Yes it was a farm but the fences without consistent upkeep were all starting to break and the smell of death was slowly getting stronger each day that I stayed there.

It wasn’t like I was leaving much behind when I left, most of the livestock had died early on when the virus had first started and most of the arable land was no longer fertile because of the virus too. It was weird how the virus affected more than just people; it affected its surroundings to which would have probably caused even more death than it initially bought with it.

Most of the seeds kept in the dry storage got damp over the time, but there was still plenty that were salvageable so that I could one day plant them when I did eventually find somewhere safe to settle down, where I would be able to sustain myself until I did eventually meet my demise, whether it me by my hand, a zombies, another survivor or just my time running out.

Notes:

The first chapter really enjoyed writing it more chapters to come, I have a feeling I might make it dark.

I also just got a fake tan for my prom on Saturday and my god do I want to wash it off my body.
