Programmed Performance

Summary:

Where did Tango come from? The answer may be not what you first think.

Oh yeah, Etho is also there.

Notes:

I once again wrote a fanfic for a class but this time... it was on accident. I had to write a short story about technology going wrong so my mind went to Cat's fic about Tango being a robot stage performer so this fic is loosely based on that. I recommend reading it afterwards, it's called Clockwork Vaudeville.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

He stood on his lift under the stage, hydraulics kicking in and rebooting up his systems. The lights in his eyes flickering on, coloring the surrounding darkness a ruby red. The sound of muffled music and an announcer announcing sounded from above. His fans slowed down to a soft whir as time ticked on, waiting for his cue. The lift quickly rose just when his name was announced, revealing to the audience as Tango.

Bright lights flashed and blinked to raise the audience’s excitement for the robotic show that is about to truly start after the appearance of the star of said show. His programming kicked in, he began to sing in a voice that mimicked human speech almost perfectly and danced in movements beyond his control. Other androids on the stage joined him, they all performed identically but clearly more robotic compared to him. Tango knew with himself being the star, he would have top of the line quality movement and sound systems while the background dancers are easily replaceable. He knew that the audience wouldn’t bat an eye if one of those robotic shells broke down on stage but would if he or one of the co-stars of the show would. He also knew that his creators didn’t know about his and the co-stars’ sentience. He grinned at this knowledge he possessed.

Tango performed the show that was ingrained into his circuits for what he can guess for months now, and with a few unique additions of his here or there. It was hard to tell with the frequent forced shutdowns and reboots after shows or repairs. The last time he was awake with the other sentient androids not during a performance, he got lucky and they quickly formed a decent plan of escape, adequate even. Tango continued on in anticipation, waiting for the time to execute the plan to arrive.

The time arrived. They made it right before the big show-stopping part of the performance and he and his accomplices will quite literally stop the show. Risking a glance at the audience, he saw a small group of people cheering him on, waving a hand-crafted banner of his face from his bright blonde hair, ruby red eyes to the freckles along his cheeks. Etho, one of the androids in the show, made his presence known which gave him the cue. Tango nodded, staring dead on at the group of fans and forced himself to power off. His cooling fans slowed down, the lights in his eyes turned off, and his head went limp. Distantly, he registered Etho and the other androids with him followed suit.

Waking up once more, there were several engineers and mechanics in his vision, all figuring out what went wrong with him, the co-stars, and the show. The head manager was also there, he was on the phone rapidly talking to someone in an upset tone. Tango hadn’t thought he could make it this far with their escape plan; so he simply waited for an opening when it was less hectic. Then it came, the people working on them were called for a meeting and the manager seemed to be leaving as well. He grabbed the attention of the other androids with him and dashed towards the first backstage exit he could find. He made sure each one made it out safely, which they all did. One by one, all five of them were at the backside of the stage they would be performing on, shadowed by darkness save for their multicolor eyes shining away. The ex-star looked back at the door and saw the manager standing there with a mix of emotions along his face. The android gave a small wave which meant nothing other than to show he has sentience and turned back around to escape with his friends. Tango never looked back after that, he’s sure none of them did.

Notes:

I wonder how my teacher thinks of this. This is the second Hermitcraft related story I gave to her so far...

I like thinking about how Tango and the other androids just simply shut down, ruining an entire show, the show shut down causes a lot of news and problems, then the five just leave to start a life or something. The ruined careers and a business because they wanted freedom. It's funny to me (and probably unrealistic but we'll ignore that.)
