What to do in a hospital

Summary:

What happens in the hospital after chapter 7 of Lightning, Meet Your Thunder

Notes:

Sorry, this will probably have shorter chapters, mostly because I feel a bit at loss about what I should write but don't want to leave people who read this handing.

If you haven't read Lightning, Meet Your Thunder... Why are you reading this if you haven't read that? Just go read that first!

Chapter 1: How to avoid a breakdown in a hospital

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

June 5, 1980

Everything is a whirlwind to Daisy.

Though she feels like she deserves a break for a minute. It's not everyday that she dies, gets resurrected by Death herself, almost dies again a moment later, wins a war, kisses the guy of her dreams her teammate and then finds out she'll get to hold her nephew in a few hours. Granted, it's probably a bigger possibility for her, as she remembers Harriet's life and knows that there was plentiful of days like this in her previous life, but she is Daisy, for Merlin's sake, not Harriet, and no amount of memories actually prepared for this adrenalin crash, not even the numerous battles against the Death Eaters have.

There are no words she knows that can describe how she feels right about now.

When Voldemort's body touched the ground, all she could have felt was relief. It was like all her strings had been cut, her body just switching to autopilot when taking down enemies.

Then Regulus approached her, with those soft, concerned, vulnerable eyes that he always had after a particularly bad fight when they would hug and just cling to each other for a while. And then he put his arms around her and she leaned into him and then they were kissing and she was so, so happy.

Then Narcissa said her water broke and her brain went... offline. She didn't even know how they got to the hospital because her mind was a constant loop of 'What if something happens to the baby because of the fight?' and 'What if she forgot something and someone comes after them because of her?'

So now, she's sitting in the waiting room, gripping Regulus' hand like her life depends on it and panicking, because surely it couldn't have been this easy, she must have forgotten something, there's no way this is it.

Her eyes start roaming over every person present, checking for injury and threat alike.

One look at Severus tells her that he is in the middle of his own assessment, though his face is impassive and his eyes calculating.

Regulus has his eyes closed, and only his breathing tells her that he is not asleep.

In the row of seats across from them are four more people.

Sirius, for one, who is looking over at Regulus as if the latter might disappear should he look away.

On his left sits Remus, who is sporting much the same look, only aimed at Sirius and much more guilty-looking. He only got here a bit ago, and was probably absent during the battle. On the orders of Dumbledore, if Daisy had to guess.

On the right from Sirius is Lily, with James embracing her with his arms from her other side while she rests her head on his shoulder. Her hand is stroking her belly, and it's only then that Daisy remembers that that's most probably Harriet in there, and that she'll be born not even two months from now, and that someone-

Oh Merlin. Someone almost killed her sister. Bellatrix almost killed Lily. And unborn baby Harriet.

She wants to puke.

The thought of Lily at Bellatrix' mercy sends another wave of pure panic through her body and she grips her wand when she doesn't see Petunia anywhere.

It takes her another minute or two to collect herself and remind her sluggish brain that Petunia is home and safe and- and most definitely freaking out because no one told her that Voldemort is dead yet. Right.

She squeezes Regulus' hand to ground herself and takes out her wand. The Patronus is easy enough to summon, and she struggles for a moment with finding the right words, but ultimately, she just says: "Petun, everyone's fine, we won, don't worry, but, uh, Narcissa has gone into labor, so I'll come pick you up."

Lily's head snaps up at that and her eyes well up with unshed tears and desperation.

Daisy's not sure if it's at the thought of seeing Petunia or of her leaving. She- she doesn't know, okay? She has always known before and now she feels like a terrible sister, and what if Lily had died?

She stands up abruptly, intent on picking up Petunia as fast as she can and leaving this situation at least for a bit, but Lily seemingly subconsciously reaches out her arm to stop her. Her lips part but the words die somewhere along the way.

It looks like Daisy is not the only one not coping well, and guiltily thinks that maybe, had she told Lily earlier about all this, she wouldn't have to be in the state she is in now.

Maybe she should stay, to comfort Lily, maybe-

But then, she already promised Petunia, and-

Then Severus stands up too, looks at Daisy in question and she sags in relief. She nods gratefully and watches as Severus disappears instead of herself.

Now, if only someone could break the silence before Petunia arrives. Or the-baby-that-could-be-Draco, should the baby arrive first.

Notes:

Wow, it took kind of an angsty turn, I guess? Don't look at me, it was a surprise to me too. And I'm not that happy with how it turned out, but... We'll see where the next chapter takes me 😐

See you next week, hopefully.

Also, this is my fifth work in the HP fandom, making it the fandom I write for the most??? How did that happen? I don't even like it that much, just time travel fics, secret identity fics, well-written fics with Snape and 'Regulus lived'. Why am I even here?
