Wild Flower on Fire

“So, you’re hyung’s boyfriend from the city?”

Work Text:

Yoongi was…shocked, to say the least. His mouth gaped open like a fish as he stared at his boyfriend of a year. Hoseok was an alpha, a pretty handsome one at that, with a killer knot, but that’s not what Yoongi was shocked about.

“Wait, let me get this straight,” he said, waving his hands in front of his face.

Hoseok just looked at Yoongi with a little confused smile on his face.

“You asked me to mate you and become a part of your pack. But…that pack is…a wild one?” Yoongi finished, leaning back in his chair with a frazzled look on his face.

Somewhere, Hoseok understood why Yoongi was so confused and surprised. Among city wolves, wild packs had a dirty reputation. They were rumoured to be uncivilized and barbaric cannibals who knew nothing of how the real world worked, but Hoseok begged to differ. The pack he was from was very much a wild pack like the rest of them, and he would go as far as saying that they were better off than most of the city wolves who worked a twelve-hour back-breaking shift to earn a living. It was impossible to raise healthy pups in the city where crime rates were high and pollution levels even higher. If Hoseok was going to mate Yoongi – which he will – he would much rather raise their pups somewhere they would be healthy, happy and cared for plenty.

“None of the rumours are true,” Hoseok frowned, but that didn’t seem to pacify Yoongi.

“Thank you for specifically pointing that out,” Yoongi deadpanned, folding his arms as he sunk into his seat.

“Baby, we all know how badly you’ve wanted to get out the city. Your shoulder is becoming worse with long work hours, and you’ve been having irregular heats the whole year I’ve been dating you.”

Yoongi rolled his eyes stubbornly, but he knew how true it was. He was a nurse, and that required all his blood, sweat and tears. After injuring his shoulder, he had barely got any time to recover before he was back tending to patients. His health hadn’t always been the best, and it was a miracle if he was able to have one heat every six months when omegas were supposed to have one every two months until mated.

And technically, he had been bickering about how he wanted to move to the countryside. Yoongi’s idea of the countryside was somewhere in the suburbs, not the bloody forest, in the middle of nowhere.

“Just think about it, baby? Please? We can make a trip this weekend if you want. Just so that I can introduce you to some of my closest friends and pack mates. The pack itself is large but we’re not that many. Five excluding me and all they’re all mated to each other,” Hoseok pleaded, leaning over the table and grabbing Yoongi’s hand with puppy eyes.

The omega rolled his eyes again, half annoyed at how quickly he gave into Hoseok’s demands every time.

“Fine,” he relented, throwing his hands up with a huff.

“One weekend,” he says with narrowed eyes as Hoseok’s face bursts into a large smile.

“One weekend, baby. I promise. You’ll love them and I’m sure they’ll love you too.”

- 🐺 -

Out of all the rumours Yoongi had heard about the wild packs, he was mildly surprised and thankful that none were true. He didn’t know what he was going to do if Hoseok’s pack mates had turned out to be cannibals.

“This, is it?” Yoongi asked, pointing to a cluster of wooden huts spread wide over an empty land hidden by trees.

“Yup!” Hoseok chirped, carrying Yoongi’s duffel bag over his shoulder. He had a broad smile on his face, one that made Yoongi feel slightly guilty about how he had been keeping Hoseok away from his pack for a whole year.

“It’s nice,” Yoongi said, admiring the area. A river flowed right at the end of the clearing, giving the entire area access to clean and fresh water along with an abundance of fish. There was a small farm lined with rows of vegetables and a few fruit trees that sporadically decorated the area. For wolves that were supposed to be cannibals, they sure had a nice civilized set-up.

“Thanks! I helped Namjoon build all the huts with my bare hands!” Hoseok said, leading Yoongi by the hand through the pack borders when he noticed the subtle shifts of scents in the air. Throughout his entire life in the city, Yoongi had never smelled so many scents and pheromones together. His life in the city had been imprisoned by scent blockers that had to be worn regularly. The only scent he had smelt were Hoseok’s and before that his parents.

“Hoseok hyung!” A voice called, and Hoseok waved to an alpha who came running, his bright red hair acting as a homing beacon for Yoongi.

“Jimin!” Hoseok shouted, embracing the alpha as he came running at full speed, jumping into Yoongi’s boyfriend’s embrace. The omega awkwardly coughed, moving away to give them a bit of space, feeling like he was interrupting two lovers.

“Sorry,” Jimin blanched, rubbing the nape of his neck before turning to Yoongi.

“So, you’re hyung’s boyfriend from the city?”

Yoongi nodded stiffly, feeling so odd at how being from the city was his sole identifying characteristic. The alpha put his hand out for Yoongi to shake, and that was when the omega realise how scantily dressed the alpha was. Yoongi suddenly didn’t know how to feel as he caught a peek of Jimin’s bare chest from under his vest. The alpha’s lower half was covered by some sort of clothing made of animal hide, and it wrapped around the legs, but Yoongi still felt his cheeks go red at the nakedness of it all.

“M-Min Yoo-Yoongi,” he stuttered out, trying not to look at Jimin’s abs that he seemed quite proud to have as they rippled against the taut skin of his abdomen.

“It’s nice to meet you.”

Jimin shook his hand enthusiastically before they were joined by a few of the other pack members. The sight of them approaching had Yoongi into a red blushing mess, and he hid behind Hoseok to shield his virgin eyes.

“Why are they all so naked?” Yoongi whispered, causing Hoseok to laugh loudly before whispering back, “We hunt and do a lot in our wolf forms. Heavy clothing like from the city gets in the way. It’s easier this way, you don’t have to if you don’t want to.”

And Yoongi would’ve melted at Hoseok’s concern for his comfort, yet an alpha and three omegas were approaching them, all barely wearing any clothing, Yoongi suddenly felt excessively stupid and out of place in his black t-shirt and khaki shorts. Even their bare feet made Yoongi shift uncomfortably in his socks and sneakers.

“Hoseok, welcome back.” The second alpha stepped forward and clapped Hoseok on the back.

“Nice to meet you, Min Yoongi. Hoseok has told us much about you.”

Yoongi meekly nodded from behind Hoseok before his boyfriend spoke up.

“This is Namjoon, the pack alpha. And you see that omega there?” Hoseok pointed towards one of the omegas – and Yoongi wanted to be mad, because yes, he could very well see the omega because said omega was probably one of the most ethereal ones he’s ever seen and he was also holding the cutest little puppy ever.

“That’s Seokjin, Namjoon’s mate and the little pup is Yeonjun.”

Yoongi nodded, and Seokjin gave him a smile which he tried so hard to return but he was sure it came out pretty foul because Seokjin’s expression suddenly dropped, and he made the action of hugging Yeonjun closer to his chest.

“Those two omegas,” Hoseok started, pointing to one with curly silver hair and one with bright pink hair.

“They are Taehyung and Jungkook, Jimin’s mates.”

“He has two omegas?” Yoongi couldn’t help but ask, causing Hoseok to laugh again.

“He does, baby.”

The two omegas gazed at Yoongi with amused expressions, and Yoongi belatedly realised that the pink-haired one was pregnant.

Yoongi suddenly felt even more nervous than ever before.

The omega quickly pulled Hoseok away, giving his friends a sorry smile and muttering something about needing a private talk.

“Are you okay?” Hoseok asked, pulling Yoongi close into a hug.

“Are you also going to take your clothes off and walk around bare chested?” Yoongi murmured, eyes closed as he breathed in Hoseok’s scent.

“No, my love. I promise I’ll keep my pants on. I have to keep you company.” Hoseok teased, pecking Yoongi’s forehead affectionately.

Yoongi had never been more grateful for Hoseok in his entire life before.

- 🐺 -

“I apologise if you were scared,” Namjoon said.

It was currently night, and the entire pack was huddled around the bonfire. Hoseok and his friends got the privilege of being closest to the flickering orange flames. Much to Yoongi’s relief, most of the other members of the pack had retired for the night, and nobody was present to watch Yoongi make more of a fool out of himself.

“I’m just not used to it is all. I was born in the city,” Yoongi ducked his head in apology, gazing at the deer leg that Hoseok was munching on. He had politely declined, not having much of an appetite, but Taehyung had given him narrowed eyes.

Seokjin was patting Yeonjun on the back when he spoke up, “Are you back for good, Hoseok?”

The alpha gazed up before shaking his head.

“I’ve come to show Yoongi my pack and home. I’ve asked him to mate with me so we may move in by next spring if everything goes well.”

This had the entire pack smiling widely. Namjoon was beginning to get worried about Hoseok being mateless, one of the main reasons he had sent the alpha out into the city.

“He can’t say no to you,” Jimin said, nudging Yoongi with his elbows and wiggling his eyebrows. Said omega blushed wildly, making himself smaller.

“You know, Jungkookie here was born in the city,” Jimin said, rubbing the pink-haired omega’s arms. Neither Jungkook, Taehyung nor Seokjin had really addressed Yoongi the whole day. They had exchanged whispers with Hoseok while staring at Yoongi, but that was about it.

“Which part are you from?” Yoongi asked, directing the question to Jungkook, who just stared at Yoongi. He stroked his swollen belly, biting his lip before he whimpered, hiding his face in Jimin’s shoulder.

Yoongi was promptly taken aback, not knowing what he did wrong. But the unmistakable scent of distressed omega was definitely coming from Jungkook.

“I-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you un-uncomfortable,” he stuttered out, pulling his jacket tighter around his body.

Jimin cuddled one of his omegas close while Taehyung lightly scented Jungkook’s neck. Yoongi threw Hoseok a helpless look, but the alpha only gave him a small smile back.

“I-I’m sorry,” Yoongi muttered again, feeling the atmosphere suddenly go stale.

There was an awkward silence in the air before Seokjin cleared his throat. Yeonjun was now fast asleep, cuddled into his parent’s neck as the omega supported his bottom.

“If you don’t mind, I think Joonie and I will call it a night. This little one is already fast asleep.”

Yoongi breathed a sigh of relief. He silently grabbed Hoseok’s hand, interlacing their fingers together before he ducked his head. He could hear Jimin and Hoseok mutter a ‘goodnight’ before footsteps receded and the head alpha and omega were gone.

“Jimin, why don’t you take and Tae take Kookie in,” Hoseok gently suggested, and the red-haired alpha nodded, lifting his youngest omega in his arms while the other followed behind him.

Soon, it was just Yoongi and Hoseok sitting around the bonfire. The fire looked like it was going to die out soon, but the heat from Yoongi’s embarrassment was enough to keep him warm. The omega suddenly closed his eyes, sharply inhaling. He felt the sudden urge to nest, go home and take out all his comfortable fluffy blankets. He hadn’t felt this strong of an urge since his last preheat.

“Are you okay?” Hoseok asked, and Yoongi suddenly burst out crying.

“I’m sorry, Seokie,” he sobbed, his entire body shaking as he realised for the nth time that day that he was too different from Hoseok’s pack. Even his existence had managed to offend one of the omegas. Yoongi was born and raised in the city, and some roots are very hard to tear out. He would always be an outcast here, and it may be Jungkook today, but what if it was Namjoon tomorrow? He would not always be able to depend on Seokjin to save his ass.

“I know, my love. I’m sure Kookie is just sensitive.” Hoseok comforted Yoongi, rubbing his arms affectionately as the elder just sobbed. He had never cried this openly before there was a first for everything.

That night, Yoongi fell asleep at the bonfire. The embers had long died out, and under the glowing moon, Hoseok postponed all his thoughts for tomorrow.

Tomorrow; everything will be fine tomorrow.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi was sitting lamely under a big tree, drawing aimless patterns in the dirt with a stick. When he awoke, Hoseok was nowhere to be found, and the omega was still reeling from his fuck up last night to ask anyone where Hoseok had gone.

“Yoongi.” A voice sounded from above, and Yoongi had to squint to look up at who it was.

Seokjin stood there, Yeonjun in one arm as he held an empty wicker basket in the other. His eyes were kind, but Yoongi couldn’t help but curl inwards. He was surely here to reprimand the foreigner for upsetting one of their own, he was the head omega, after all.

“Do you mind looking after Yeonjun for a while? I have to go out to the fields and Taehyung is busy for the morning.”

Yoongi gaped at Seokjin. If he was the omega, he would never trust Yoongi with his pup.

“Uh, yes. But are you sure?” He held his hands out hesitantly, and Seokjin made quick work of transferring the pup. Yeonjun blinked lazily when he was secured in Yoongi’s arm, but he made no move to fuss or cry, merely going back to sleep, all cuddled up in Yoongi’s neck.

“Thank you so much,” Seokjin said, before walking off.

For the next hour, Yoongi sat under the tree as still as a statue. He was scared of moving, lest he woke up Yeonjun, and he didn’t know if Seokjin would appreciate it if Yoongi moved locations.

The pack grounds were empty now, not a single soul moving around the huts, and Yoongi started to feel sick. The sun was beating down mercilessly, and Yoongi didn’t think this much heat was good for the pup.

Slowly, he got up, trying his best not to startle the pup and moved to Hoseok’s hut. It was right in the middle of the pack grounds, and Yoongi found comfort in the fact that it was not one of the outer lying ones.

“Hello puppy,” Yoongi cooed, stroking Yeonjun’s chubby cheeks as he lay the pup down on one of Hoseok’s sleeping furs.

“Aren’t you the cutest.”

The pup gaggled with happy noises, grabbing a hold of Yoongi’s fingers as the omega swung them back and forth, elated giggles exploding from the pup.

He played with the pup for a while, and just as he was in his fourth round of peekaboo, a strong angry omega scent slammed Yoongi in the face before the owner of the scent slammed the door of Hoseok’s hut open.

“What do you think you’re doing?” An angry voice demanded, and Yoongi realised it was Taehyung. He hugged Yeonjun close to his chest as the pup started to fuss, but it seemed to enrage Taehyung even more.

“Who gave you permission to touch the head alpha’s pup?”

Yeonjun started crying, and Taehyung was quick to pull the pup out of Yoongi’s arms before the omega could soothe him.

“W-what?”

“Wait till I tell Seokjin that you were trying to kidnap his pup.”

Yoongi’s brain was having a hard time processing the information as Taehyung accused him of trying to kidnap the head alpha’s pup. He listened as the other omega spat insult after insult, and he just stood there, brain buffering as he tried to stutter out an explanation.

“You really want me to believe that Seokjin hyung gave Yeonjun to you? You? First Jungkook and now Yeonjun? Are you infertile or something? Targeting pregnant omegas and pups.”

That hurt Yoongi more than he thought. He found it absurd that Taehyung would ever accuse him of such a thing, but to call him infertile? That was the highest insult to an omega. However, Yoongi didn’t want to think that one of Hoseok’s close friends and pack mate would think of him so lowly: as just a pup stealing omega who targets pregnant ones because of their own infertility.

He didn’t utter a single word as Taehyung left Hoseok’s hut with Yeonjun in his arms. He merely slumped to the floor, exhausted and tired. Tears fell from his eyes as he curled up on one of Hoseok’s furs. He hadn’t even seen his boyfriend all day, and somewhere that hurt even more.

- 🐺 -

Like almost all wolves born in the city, Yoongi had shifted into his wolf form only once – the day he had presented as an omega – and even that was an involuntary shift. People in the city rarely, almost never shifted, preferring their human forms more, and it had become so that most didn’t even know how to shift.

It was late in the evening when Namjoon knocked on the door of Hoseok’s hut. Yoongi had just woken up from his sadness induced nap and was tidying the hut when the knock was heard.

“I’m sorry,” Yoongi muttered, immediately after opening the door, tilting his neck and exposing his scent glad as an apology and sign of submission to the head alpha.

Namjoon furrowed his eyebrows, a frown settling over his face.

“What’re you saying sorry for?”

Yoongi frowned back before hunching his shoulders. “Never mind. Can I help you with something? Hoseok’s not here.”

That seemed to put a smile on Namjoon’s face.

“Actually, the pack is going for a run in the forest. Do you want to come?”

“A run?” Yoongi cocked his head in confusion.

Namjoon nodded slowly, licking his lips.

“Running…in our wolf forms.”

Yoongi could feel tears well up in his eyes again. He just wanted Hoseok, and the alpha hadn’t even come to check on him all day.

“I, uh…” Yoongi stuttered embarrassed. He felt mortified, imagining the scenario in which he wouldn’t be able to shift into his wolf. He frankly didn’t know how and to put that across in words seemed impossible. It was as if he couldn’t embarrass himself further.

“You don’t have to come, if you don’t want to,” Namjoon said, giving Yoongi a kind smile, but the omega could see the disappointment in his eyes.

“I, uh…actually don’t know how to shift into my wolf.”

There, the truth was out the cat out of the bag. Namjoon’s eyes momentarily widened dramatically before he tried to school his expression into a neutral one.

“Oh,” the alpha lamely replied before he coughed.

“That’s fine. Maybe you can stay with Jungkook. He’s in the healer’s hut, just down the path there.”

Yoongi nodded but internally, he wanted to burrow himself in the dirt and decompose to become one with the earthworms.

“Thank you,” he whispered before Namjoon left.

He was sure that Jungkook didn’t want to spend time with him. He was just an infertile omega with a grudge after all, and it wouldn’t look good if he approached a lonely pregnant omega after trying to kidnap the head alpha’s pup.

With a bitter scoff, he shut the door, choosing to sit outside on the back porch and stare at the moon.

Sometimes, he wondered why his parents didn’t just continue living with their ancestral pack.

- 🐺 -

By midnight, the pack had yet to return. Yoongi had never heard so many crickets in his life, and the deafening silence was starting to get to him.

He finally ventured outside the hut, heading towards the communal dining area for some leftover scraps when he crossed the healer’s hut. He could see Jungkook inside through the window, shuffling around and playing with various herbs.

For a second, Yoongi bit his lip, considering his next move. If Taehyung were here, he would bite Yoongi’s head off, but the omega wanted to make amends for his wrongdoings.

He knocked on the healer’s door, positively startling Jungkook before the omega opened it.

“Hi,” Yoongi whispered, careful not to seem threatening.

The younger omega whimpered, clutching his swollen belly.

“I just wanted to ask if you were hungry.”

Jungkook seemed to contemplate, before nodding his head. He was hungry, and the meal Jimin had left for him before going with Taehyung was barely anything for the pregnant omega. And it seemed like the pack was taking their sweet time out there, considering it was almost midnight.

“Okay, let me just get some stuff and I’ll meet you in Hoseok’s hut.”

The younger omega nodded, leaving Yoongi in the healer’s hut. He would show that he was not a threat, some foreigner invading his boyfriend’s pack.

- 🐺 -

Hoseok’s hut smelled wonderful by the time Yoongi was done cooking. He had made a medicinal broth for Jungkook, one his mother had passed down to him before passing. She had said that it was extremely nutritional for pregnant omegas, and Yoongi could only hope and pray that it was.

“Here,” Yoongi smiled, placing a small wooden bowl in front of Jungkook. The omega seemed hesitant at first, taking a sniff of the soup before smiling.

“That smells so good!”

And that was the first time Jungkook had addressed Yoongi verbally.

“If it suits you, take the whole pot home,” Yoongi said and watched happily as Jungkook gulped the entire thing down.

“I was feeling nauseous earlier, thank you,” Jungkook said, thrusting his bowl forward for another serving just before a horn blew, signalling the entire pack’s arrival.

Yoongi started pouring another bowl for Jungkook when the door to Hoseok’s hut opened, the alpha’s entire friend group entering. They were filthy from head to toe, grass and twigs tangled in their hair and mud, caked their faces. They were laughing as they entered, joyous voices carrying all the way over to the kitchen where the two omegas were seated.

Yoongi placed the second bowl of broth in front of Jungkook right as Jimin and Hoseok entered the kitchen, freezing upon seeing their omegas together.

“Kookie,” Jimin acknowledged, “What’re you eating?”

The omega smiled at his alpha, slinking off the chair to kiss him in greeting, but that alpha couldn’t seem to take his gaze off Yoongi.

“What did you feed him?”

Yoongi smiled small. “Just some medicinal broth my mother used to have during her pregnancy.”

Jimin narrowed his eyes suspiciously before he looked at Jungkook.

“How much of it did you eat?”

The omega shrugged, “Just a small bowl but hyung, it was so yum-“

Jimin promptly grabbed Jungkook’s hand before he could finish, dragging him out. He turned to Hoseok one last time before sneering.

“You heard Tae earlier. Control your omega before one of us does.”

Yoongi gaped at Jimin’s comment. What did he even mean?

Whatever it meant, it seemed to anger Hoseok, who growled, “Enough, Min.”

But the alpha merely growled back.

“Watch yourself,” he spat towards Yoongi before dragging Jungkook out with him. The omega turned to give Yoongi a small smile, but it didn’t do shit in comparison to the angry pheromones that were floating in the air.

He had fucked up…again.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi lay awake that night, staring at the wooden ceiling as Hoseok moved next to him. It seemed like the alpha wasn’t getting much sleep either.

“Yoon,” Hoseok whispered, connecting their hands.

The omega turned to face his boyfriend, “I keep messing up, don’t I?”

And Hoseok looked so so sad. He raised his thumb to stroke under Yoongi eyes.

“I think you should go back to the city.”
Yoongi’s heart stopped beating at Hoseok’s words.

“What does that mean? W-what about you?”

Hoseok just smiled sadly, “I have some work with Namjoon here but I’ll join you in a few months.”

Yoongi felt his heart lodge in his throat. Was this Hoseok’s way of banishing Yoongi? Breaking up with him? Had he deemed Yoongi an unacceptable mate? Was Hoseok’s alpha really okay with sending Yoongi’s omega away like that?

“No, no. Seokie, I promise I’ll be good, just please, I want to stay with you.”

Hoseok merely shushed his omega, “What do you mean, my love? You’ve always been good. So good.”

And even as Yoongi cried himself to sleep that night, he couldn’t shake the feeling of heartbreak.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi was gone even before the sun had risen. Hoseok had personally helped him pack all his things, dropping him off at the borders and sending him with a passionate kiss.

“Are you sure I can’t stay?” Yoongi whispered, his hands looped around Hoseok’s waist as he pouted at the alpha.

“I’m sorry, my love. I don’t want you to hurt anymore.”

Sending Yoongi away really was hurting Hoseok, but he wasn’t ignorant to all the negative comments floating around. Seokjin and Namjoon had tried their best, but Yoongi just always ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The work Hoseok had left with Namjoon here was to wrap up all his projects and belongings before joining Yoongi in the city. This had been this birth pack, his ancestral one, and although Hoseok was more than ready to leave it for Yoongi, the imaginary string that bound him to this earth stopped him from going.

“Being away from you is going to hurt more,” Yoongi whimpered, fisting Hoseok’s white t-shirt in his hands tightly. He wasn’t sure if Hoseok was actually going to come back to the city. Maybe he was secretly hoping for Yoongi to forget about him, and last night’s conversation was Hoseok letting Yoongi down softly.

“I promise I’ll finish and come to you as soon as I can,” Hoseok said, pressing another kiss to his boyfriend’s lips.

And as Yoongi turned to trek down the path they had trekked up a day ago, Hoseok felt himself cry. He knew the omega was better off away from his nosy pack members and friends who saw him as nothing but a city wolf, but it didn’t hurt any less.

The alpha huffed as he put away the furs Yoongi had used during his stay. They were coated in the omega’s scent, causing Hoseok’s heart to clench painfully. His hut felt so much emptier without the omega in it, Yoongi was always cleaning, sitting on the back porch or even just humming a tune. He filled the place with life, and Hoseok found himself minutely regretting his decision.

- 🐺 -

“Hey Kook,” Hoseok said, surprised to find the omega at his door all on his own. The younger didn’t venture much alone, always choosing to drag Taehyung or Jimin or even sometimes both along to wherever he wanted to go.

“Is Yoongi hyung here?” He asked, twiddling his fingers, resting his hands on top of the swell of his stomach.

“He…uh…left this morning. Although, I think he left this for you.”

Hoseok rubbed the nape of his neck awkwardly before retrieving a steel thermos Yoongi had packed from the city. The omega had left it out in the morning, sticking a small hot pink sticky note on the top with Jungkook’s name on it.

“Oh,” the omega said, sighing in relief when the smell of Yoongi’s medicinal broth floated out.

“Jimin won’t be too happy about you drinking that,” Hoseok said, scrunching his nose. But the omega didn’t seem to care, sipping the broth with happy noises.

“It helps me with my nausea,” he said, smiling as he held the thermos close to him. Thankfully, Jungkook’s city origins made him familiar with various products from the city that were not available in the wild; the thermos being one of them.

“I’m glad,” Hoseok replied, rubbing his eyes as he gazed back at his empty hut.

“You said he left?” Jungkook whispered, a pout forming on his lips. He had wanted to get to know Yoongi and befriend the older omega even though they had got off on the wrong foot.

Hoseok nodded, and Jungkook pouted even more, “When is he going to be back?”

“He’s not…”

“Oh…”

No more words were exchanged as Hoseok felt his heart crack a little more, and Jungkook felt like he had missed out on someone he could’ve been friends with.

- 🐺 -

A weekend...Yoongi couldn't even last in the wild for a weekend. He felt miserable as he lugged his backpack up the stairs towards his shared apartment with Hoseok. It would be empty now, just him but after he got back to work at the hospital, the apartment would be empty more than it was occupied.

The omega cursed as he stumbled into the apartment. He was tired, and he could smell the remnants of Hoseok's scent on the walls of his apartment.

He missed the alpha terrible already. The trek back had been exhausting without Hoseok's energy to keep Yoongi going. The omega had been caught up in so many thoughts and regrets by the time he had boarded the bus that he had almost missed his stop.

It was late afternoon by the time Yoongi crawled under his blanket. He had pulled out all his nesting material, fluffing the blankets up and cocooning himself in the middle with a sniffle. He was a product of the city, detached from his animal side to such a large extent that he couldn't even shift into his world.

And what had the wretched city given to him in return? Irregular heats, probably breathing problems and a whole life of processed foods while tending to patients day in and day out. He wouldn't say that he wasn't suited for life in the wild, it's just that he didn't know anything else other than the city. If given the opportunity to properly adjust, Yoongi was sure he would be a more than suitable mate for Hoseok. Except, everyone in the wild already had a preconceived notion of Yoongi. He was from the city, and they automatically assumed that he was too fragile to survive in the wild.

"I hate myself..." Yoongi mumbled into the darkness of the room. He had just a little over 15 hours until he had to get up, get dressed and walk into the hospital as if nothing had happened.

Yoongi closed his eyes and breathed out a sigh. He secretly made a decision that he would go about his work just as he normally had before Hoseok was around. And if Hoseok did keep his promise and come back in a few months, he would figure everything out then.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi had just come back from a gruelling shift at the hospital. He had cleaned up someone's vomit and then bandaged a rather foul-smelling infection, and it was safe to say that Yoongi was not doing any better than he was a few days ago when he had arrived back in the city.

It was currently the middle of the week and Yoongi hadn't heard anything from Hoseok. He remembered what a task it was to teach Hoseok how to use a mobile phone for the first time, but even then, Yoongi had no idea that the alpha was from the wild.

The omega flopped on the sofa in the living room with a groan. His shoulder had started acting up again, and even slight movements were hurting him. He had barely made through with a medicated patch, but the pain was really starting to get to him. Just as he was about to lay down for a short nap, he heard a sudden banging on the front door.

Yoongi's heart rate shot up, the omega in him jumping in glee at the thought of Hoseok coming back early. But the alpha had a key, he wouldn't bang on the door, and Yoongi knew his scent.

He cautiously opened the door, just enough to stick his face out but not his body. In front of his door was Jungkook, Hoseok's close friend and packmate Jungkook, and Jimin's second mate, Jungkook.

Pregnant  wild omega, Jungkook.

"Jungkook?" Yoongi couldn't hold the shock in his voice when he saw the omega standing in front of his front door.

"What are you doing here?"

The older rushed to get the younger inside, making sure no stray alphas had followed him before promptly shutting and locking the door. It was odd to see Jungkook in the city, considering what had happened during their first meeting. It was even weirder to see someone like Jungkook dressed so scantily out in the city.

"Hi hyung," the younger smiled excitedly, supporting his swelling belly from the bottom with one hand.

"How did you find me?"

A million questions and scenarios were running through Yoongi's head. Taehyung and Jimin were going to kill him, rip him apart and probably accuse him of kidnapping Jungkook.

Oh,  God ...

Dread filled him and he began to frown at the omega who looked horribly excited for someone who had essentially run away from his pack.

"I sniffed you out!" Jungkook said excitedly, smiling gleefully like a child who had scored full marks on a spelling test.

Yoongi had to suppress half the urge to snort in amusement. Of course, Jungkook sniffed him out. He hadn't expected anything less from the omega but he couldn't help but ask.

"Did Hoseok come with you?"

There was a big fat chance that the alpha didn't even know Jungkook was with Yoongi and an even lesser chance that he would've come along.

"Sorry," Jungkook frowned but Yoongi shook his head.

"It's fine. How about I get you some clothes first?"

Jungkook made himself comfortable on the sofa while Yoongi looked for some clothes. He wasn't sure if any of his clothes would fit him but at the same time, if Jimin suddenly decided to run through the city in a mad rampage, Yoongi knew he wouldn't appreciate Jungkook wearing Hoseok's clothes.

He picked out the biggest things he had, an oversized hoodie and shorts that were made from soft material. The younger omega cooed when he touched them, rushing off to change in Yoongi's bathroom.

Meanwhile, Yoongi scavenged his kitchen for things to eat. He hadn't quite eaten in the last few days, choosing to live off the hospital's cafeteria food that proved to be quite sufficient for him.

With a sigh, he ordered some seaweed soup with rice and a few side dishes from a restaurant down the road. He figured it would be suitable for the pregnant omega to digest.

"These are so soft," Jungkook whispered, coming back into the living room and seating himself down on the sofa again.

"Yeah? I'm glad you like them." Yoongi gave him a half-hearted smile, pulling a chair and sitting across him.

"Food will be here in a while."

The two then sat in awkward silence for a while before Jungkook spoke up, twiddling his fingers.

"Hoseok's hyung's been sad for the past few days."

Yoongi gazed at the omega, a flurry of emotions stirring inside him.

"Oh."

"He said you weren't coming back."

"I didn't have a choice. The people of your pack don't really like me."

"That's not true, hyung. I like you."

Yoongi smiled at that. He felt warm at the omega's admission, even though it was a small one.

"I like you too, Jungkook-ah."

The two then sat in silence again, except the next time, it was Yoongi who spoke up.

"Do Jimin and Taehyung know you're here?"

The younger omega blanched, a sheepish smile stretching on his face as he rubbed his hoodie-clad arms.

"Uh, no?" But it sounded more like a question than an assertion.

"So, they're going to find you missing and then I'm going to have an angry omega and an even angrier alpha on my back?"

"Jimin and Tae hyung won't be angry," Jungkook giggled, but Yoongi really thought otherwise.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi wasn't sure why this was happening to him. First, it was an angry Taehyung and Jimin and now, it was looking to be an angry Namjoon.

"How do you all keep finding me?" Yoongi whispered frustratedly, pulling at his hair while simultaneously rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. It was just past dawn and Yoongi had barely got any sleep on the sofa after setting Jungkook up in his room.

"I sniffed Jungkook out." Seokjin coughed awkwardly, shifting from one foot to the other. Yoongi was honestly surprised but also a little relieved that Seokjin had managed to find more modest clothes.

"Where did you get those?" Yoongi asked, pointing to the pink t-shirt and jeans that Seokjin was wearing.

"They're from when Namjoon and I have to come out into the city for supplies. Very rarely though."

Yoongi just nodded, not really up for a conversation. Before Seokjin's arrival, the omega had been contemplating how he would go to work. Leaving Jungkook alone was not an option but after opening the door to Seokjin, Yoongi felt somewhat relieved, although he wasn't very confident in leaving Seokjin alone either.

"Does Namjoon know you're here?"

Seokjin snorted ungracefully, "Of course. He was the one who sent me to bring Jungkook back."

The weight from Yoongi's shoulder dropped. At least Jimin and Taehyung weren't coming.

"Will you be staying here long?" Yoongi asked, curling under the blankets on the sofa after he directed Seokjin to where Jungkook was still snoring away.

But the older omega merely shrugged, indicating nonchalance to Yoongi's question meaning that they were probably going to be here a while.

Yoongi didn't get much sleep after that either.

- 🐺 -

Seokjin and Jungkook were idly chatting at the dining table. The oldest omega had no idea how to operate a stovetop, leaving Yoongi to do the cooking in the morning. But the omega didn't have anything in his pantry or fridge and ended up ordering breakfast as well. He felt slightly irritated at the pitiful looks the other omegas passed him but he decided it would be better not to comment on it.

"You know what," Yoongi paused before he stepped out the door. He was about to leave for the hospital, house keys and id card in hand before he stopped.

"Actually, I'm going to take you guys out into the city today."

Seokjin looked mildly horrified at Yoongi's admission, while Jungkook clapped his hands excitedly. It was a little irresponsible for Yoongi to just take a day off work since he was a nurse but he had his vacation days piling up anyways.

Yoongi had no idea what he was thinking when he made that statement. He couldn't take the boys out clubbing since Jungkook was pregnant, so he had to settle on something tame and appropriate.

"What do you do for work anyways?" Jungkook asked as Yoongi helped him put on another hoodie. Seokjin was going to have to stick to the clothes he came in because Yoongi didn't have anything that was going fit the omega's large shoulders.

"I'm a nurse."

"Oh?" Jungkook asked, but Seokjin looked like he had no idea what Yoongi was talking about.

"Hyung, it's like a healer. A nurse is a healer."

The realisation then seemed to strike Seokjin as his eyes lit up.

"Ah, you should've just said healer."

"What kind of nurse are you?"

Yoongi smiled at the question. He really did love what he did for a job, although the work was taxing, it was equally rewarding.

"I usually work with pups."

That seemed to delight Jungkook and Seokjin even more, "You can help when my pups come!"

And Yoongi had to suppress a sad smile at that.

"Maybe Kook-ah. Maybe."

- 🐺 -

The tamest thing Yoongi could think of was ice cream and cakes. He was sure they didn't have this in the wild, and while Yoongi loved his coffee, he didn't want to accidentally tempt Jungkook.

"I haven't eaten ice cream in ages," Jungkook smiled, pressing his hands to the display glass. Yoongi felt proud of having achieved something, and even the look of pure astonishment on Seokjin's face was worth it.

"They have cakes as well," Yoongi said, pointing to the display case full of colourful desserts and frostings.

The city omega ended up spending quite a pretty penny on desserts that day; Jungkook had ordered ten different flavours of ice cream to try while Seokjin had ordered around the same number of cakes, cookies and cupcakes.

Often, Yoongi forgot the little joys the city had to offer. The art galleries, museums, parks and even smaller joys like ice cream and cake. He hadn't realised just how much more different life in the wild was.

The three omegas were currently seated in a booth. Jungkook was munching on a chocolate chip cookie while Seokjin was fiddling with a blue raspberry ice slush. Yoongi had laughed so hard when the oldest omega had taken his first sip, instantly getting a brain freeze and claiming he was going to die.

"I moved out of the city when I was ten," Jungkook suddenly said, gaining Yoongi's attention.

"Oh," Yoongi lamely replied, tapping his cup of strawberry milkshake.

"My parents had to move quickly because I used to have asthma as a child, and the city pollution was making it worse."

Yoongi nodded in understanding. He understood, he really did. Jungkook was essentially a wild omega with city beginnings. He had lived the majority of his life in the wild to be considered one of them. Yoongi, unfortunately, didn't have that.

- 🐺 -

Jungkook and Seokjin decided that they would leave on Saturday early morning. Yoongi had introduced the eldest to flavoured soju the previous night and had successfully got the opportunity to see a drunk Seokjin.

"Are you sure you don't want to come back with us?" Jungkook asked, pouting a bit and giving Yoongi his best puppy eyes. However, the older resisted, sighing deeply as he thought of Hoseok.

Would Hoseok want him to come back?

He didn't quite have the answers to a lot of things he was curious about.

"I don't think it's my time yet," Yoongi said, cupping Jungkook's cheek affectionately before wrapping his arms around him. The younger omega's belly created an obstruction, but Yoongi enjoyed having some physical contact with another omega.

"But you will visit soon, right?"

"Maybe Kook-ah. Maybe."

Yoongi rode the bus with them all the way to the city's borders. He had held Seokjin's hand throughout the entire ride as the oldest was a bit apprehensive about the bus.

He hugged them both one last time before letting them go into the forest. Yoongi had formed deep bonds with them over the last few days, and quite honestly, seeing them go hurt him...just a little bit.

- 🐺 -

The weather was cloudy today; grey overcast skies and the occasional lightning and thunder had Yoongi in a positively foul mood.

He had got yelled at by a patient in the hospital for making a pup cry after a vaccination. It seemed horrendous to him, but he had listened to it all and taken it in stride and apologised.

On typical days like this, Yoongi found himself missing Hoseok the most. He still hadn't heard from the alpha, and Yoongi self-explained it with the lack of reception in the forest. He remembers the first time he had taught Hoseok how to use a mobile phone, he had found his boyfriend's inability so endearing.

Today; however, he felt a sad twinge in his chest as he thought about the alpha. A month had passed since he had come back from the wild, and another handful of weeks had passed ever since Jungkook and Seokjin had visited him in the city.

They had clicked a picture that day, in a photo booth at the arcade, and the flash of the camera had startled Seokjin that he had screamed so loudly. The strip of photos was hung above Yoongi's desk in his bedroom, the omega with his cat ear headband, Jungkook with his bunny ear headband and Seokjin's shocked face made the picture so much better.

He opened Hoseok's closet, a small wooden wardrobe that housed the alpha's limited clothes. The smell of the alpha had gone stale, it was barely there but Yoongi took out a few sweatshirts nonetheless, adding them to his nest before covering himself up to his face and then falling asleep, cuddled up to Hoseok's pillow as if the alpha was right there next to him.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi woke up with a startle, his breathing ragged and his heart beating heavy in his chest. His blankets pooled around his waist, and his forehead was matted in sweat. There was an odd thrum in his chest, and even though he tried to put his hand over his frenzying heart to calm it, the pain didn't seem to subside.

It was pouring outside now, and the raindrops hit his window unflinchingly, causing a sound to echo in Yoongi's empty room. The omega got out of bed, staring at the city down below. His apartment had a view of the main road, and Yoongi found himself zoning out at the passing cars and running pedestrians who were trying to get out of the rain. Way past the city, Yoongi could see the peeking green of the forest hidden by the city walls. It was apparently supposed to prevent "wild animals" from getting in, but Yoongi knew who the government was really trying to prevent.

Like a zombie, Yoongi mindlessly started moving about his apartment. He packed a bag first, shoving in pants, socks and other things he felt were important. He was due at the hospital in a couple of hours, but Yoongi didn't seem to care about his job at the moment.

Clad in one of Hoseok's sweatshirts and pants, he ran down to the convenience store down the road, backpack on his pack as he held a hand over his head. Something had prevented him from taking a raincoat or an umbrella, perhaps the undeniable pull that Yoongi was feeling.

The earlier pain had turned into an incessant tugging, and it felt like Yoongi was being involuntarily dragged by his chest somewhere.

He hurriedly purchased a few cartons of banana milk and bottles of peach flavoured soju before making a run for the bus stop. He got on a bus to the borders of the city.

He had no idea why he was going there, especially in the rain. His weak nose wouldn't be able to scent Hoseok's pack, nor would he be able to find his way back in case he got lost, but he trusted this pull, something told him that Hoseok would be on the other end.

- 🐺 -

Yoongi hated the smell of the damp forest. It prevented him from leaving scent trails and other indications. It prevented him from recognising pack territories and even though he would be able to function better in his wolf form, Yoongi didn't know how to shift.

He cursed as he ran through the ran, taking sporadic cover under trees that dripped water into the back of his clothes. The mud was slippery, and he found himself slipping numerous times, even though his shoes were supposed to have extra grip.

When he landed in the mud for what was probably the tenth time, Yoongi cried out, frustration and anger getting to him. He hated himself for coming out in the rain as if his stupid city wolf would be able to locate Hoseok. He hated Hoseok for telling him to go back to the city, he hated Hoseok's pack for being so nasty towards him, and he hated Jungkook and Seokjin the most for being so nice. For giving him a chance to show them that the city wasn't all that bad.

All the fight drained out of him as he kneeled in the mud. His sweatpants were covered in mud to the top of his knees, and his socks were all wet, making squishy noises every time he took a step.

And sitting there in the mud, in the middle of the vast forest, Yoongi cried. He cried crocodile tears, wiping them away with irritation while the rain burned his eyes.

He felt pathetic, and it was all his fault, and only if Hoseok was here-

"Yoongi!" The omega heard a voice, although it was unclear due to the rain. It could've very well been a figment of his imagination, but the voice sounded an awful lot like Hoseok.

"Yoongi!" The voice came again, and Yoongi squinted as he tried to look for the owner of the voice. A figure approached from the distance, and the omega cried out again.

Hoseok was here, everything would be okay...

The alpha was soaking wet, wearing an orange t-shirt and shorts. His dark hair stuck to his forehead, and Yoongi found some solace that even Hoseok looked so terribly miserable.

"Yoongi, oh my God," Hoseok said, crashing next to Yoongi and embracing him tightly. The alpha didn't seem to care about the mud or the rain, giving Yoongi his sole attention and focus.

"What are you doing here?" The alpha screamed, trying to talk over the rain.

"What are you doing here?" Yoongi shot back, rubbing the snot, rain and tears from his face.

"I-" Hoseok stuttered, but quickly shook his head.

"I'll explain it some other time. I've missed you so much, I'm so sorry."

Hoseok's words were rushed but Yoongi could barely comprehend them over the noise of the rain and thunder. He fisted Hoseok's shirt tightly in his fist before sticking his face in Hoseok's chest.

The alpha smelled distinctly of the petrichor that Yoongi hated so much, but he could still smell Hoseok's characteristic scent underneath it all that he loved so much.

And even as the rain drenched them to the bone, even though they had a lot of things to figure out, Yoongi and Hoseok pretended that everything was alright right there in each other's arms.

"I love you," Hoseok muttered, squeezing his omega tight.

"I'm never leaving you alone ever again."

Notes:

This idea sprouted out of thin air. I swear I was writing something else but began writing this instead. I ran wild with this and felt a little crazy after finishing it hehe

Also, the ending may seem a little rushed (it probably is) but I have a plan and I rushed it and left it open-ended on purpose!
