Summary
“What do you want?” Neal asks, voice hard.
“To rid the world of a filthy abomination,” she says, grinning. “Poor little clone, ousted from the heroes and becoming a dirty thief.” She puts her hand in her pocket. “Hybrid monster pretending it’s a real boy.”
(Neal Caffrey is Conner “Kon-El” Kent)

Ch1
“It was like half an hour ago and they’re just down the street.”
“Maybe they’re just busy today,” Peter says.
“But I smell—” He stops himself. “I saw them park outside,” he says instead.
“Maybe someone else ordered a pizza,” Peter says, agitation growing.
-
A blast of sonic energy shoots through the office, shattering all of the glass walls.Neal, at inhuman speeds, runs to Peter and knocks him to the ground, shielding his body with his own.
Neal can hear the attacker approach, their footsteps silent but not too silent for him to hear.
“I smell Kryptonian,” he hears the attacker say, her voice a predatory growl.
There’s another blast and a blood curtling scream.
“Come out, come out, wherever you are!” she yells.
Blast. Scream.
“I’m sorry, Peter,” Neal whispers and gets up.
“Neal!” Peter whispers. “What are you doing?!”
Neal heads out of Peter’s office, floating over the ground of shattered glass.
“Oh, there you are,” the orange woman says. “Isn’t this just a treat?”
She pulls out a box and flicks open the top, revealing a chunk of Kryptonite.
Neal crumples to the ground, the excruciating, debilitating pain surging through his entire being.
“Bested by a rock,” she sneers. “How pathetic.”
She picks him up by his hair, forcing him to look at her.
“First the fall of Krypton. Now the fall of Kon-El.” She smiles and shoots him with her gun, sending him flying through the window.
“Neal!” Peter cries, scrambling up as if he can somehow catch him.
Peter falls to his knees, his whole body going numb.
Gone. Neal’s gone, and he died in agony.
Peter can’t seem to hear anything but the deafening static buzzing in his mind. His hands tremble by his side as he stares out the window.
It’s too soon. Neal was almost off his anklet. Peter was planning to make him an official part of the team. He was supposed to come over for dinner that weekend. Elizabeth was going to make his favorite breaded chicken. Neal was going to make a pie.
Peter knows that Neal’s future and Neal coming over for dinner are not comparable, but all he can think about is how he’ll never have dinners with Neal again. Never bicker over a glass of wine that is far too advanced for his palette. Never hear Neal’s little hums of delight as he digs into El’s cooking. Never tease him about how many seconds and thirds he gets.
He’ll never have any moments with Neal again.

and begins to head out.And then there’s a burst of wind so strong that all the papers left on desks go flying and she gets slammed against the wall.
Peter glances up and his heart stops.
Neal.
Neal who is flying above the ground with a stony look in his eyes.
The woman reaches for her box again but Neal shoots some sort of heat beam from his eyes and burns her hand, making her drop the box.
He flies across the room and in an almost anticlimatic end of events, knocks her out with one clean blow.
Neal is out of breath, obviously still weak from what she had done to him. “Does anyone have any handcuffs?” When no one responds, he huffs. “C’mon, you’re FBI agents. Someone has to have handcuffs.”
Everyone quickly fumbles to get their handcuffs.
“Neal,” Peter says, voice cracking. He pulls himself to his feet and just stares at Neal who stands there alive.
“I’m sorry,” Neal says quietly.
“For what?” Peter asks.
“For lying,” Neal says.
“I don’t care,” Peter says. “I don’t care because you… you’re alive and that’s all that matters.”
Neal sees as someone cuffs the woman’s hands behind her back. “A representative from the Justice League is on their way.”
“You know the Justice League,” Peter says, a slightly hysterical chuckle slipping out.
Neal smiles awkwardly. “Yeah. I do.” He rubs a hand to the back of his neck. “Peter, look—”
Peter doesn’t let him finish whatever he’s going to say. Instead, he hurls himself at Neal and pulls him into a crushing hug.
Neal goes tense in his embrace. “Peter?”
“Please tell me this is real. Tell me you’re really here,” Peter whispers.
“I’m fine,” Neal says, finally wrapping his arms around him too. “I swear.”
And that’s all that matters now.
So what Neal can fly and blow windtunnels with the ease of a whistle and shoot lasers out of his eyes? He’s alive.
Neal’s alive.
