Work Text:
Dirk may not show it, but he really did care for his friends. It was hard seeing Quint so unlike himself. He tried his best to help but... he doesn't really have much experience in the whole "giving and receiving comfort" thing. But he tried! He really did! But what's there to do when your friend's parents have been confirmed dead after they've been clinging onto hope for over a year.
Not much.
So he made all of Quints favorite foods, kept everything nice and clean, he even did all of Quints unsavory chores.
It didn't work.
Then one day he made a mistake. He was just messing around trying to break the awful tension of game night. He didn't mean to. He just wasn't thinking. It could've even been funny if he had just waited, wasn't so stupid, wasn't such an idiot, making a joke about family, about parents.
He knows he doesn't get what its like to have parents who care, who are they for you, who support you.He knows he doesn't know what its like to have parents who stayed, parents who feed you, protected you.
He knows he doesn't know what its like to have parents who loved him, but Quint didn't have to say it, didn't have to yell. He shouldn't have yelled back.
Now Quint won't talk to him.
Won't even look at him.
Like Dirk's dead to him
He should have never mentioned his parents.
He shouldn't have mentioned Quint's
