LORCAN THE FRIGID
Early Life:
At age 11, Lorcan came into his magic while training to master the greatsword. Lorcan’s father and uncle, Cahir the Ruthless, had a disagreement, and Lorcan’s uncle Cahir killed the family while young Lorcan was learning how to control his magic from the tribe’s shaman.
Cahir was banished from the Chasind tribe for being a kinslayer, but Lorcan demanded Cahir’s death. Knowing that he would not be able to defeat his uncle as he was, Lorcan braved the swamps of the Korcari Wilds in search of the Mother of Vengeance, Flemeth.
Hungry and tired, Lorcan found the elusive old woman. After telling his story, Flemeth agreed to teach him magic and the Dwarven Trade language. In return, however, she wanted to beget a girl from him before he could leave her tutelage. Despite not knowing what “beget” meant, the boy agreed, too caught up in his anger to care. A deal was struck, the contract signed in blood.
Years later, Flemeth gave birth to a boy. Once she realized that the child would be bereft of magic, she left him in the Wilds just beyond the wards that protected her hut from wild animals and intruders. Lorcan could hear the newborn babe crying, begging for milk, affection, anything but the foggy air of the surrounding marshland.
Driven by compassion for the helpless child left abandoned, Lorcan took the babe and stole away into the night. By the time he had arrived at his tribe’s outer walls, the child was lethargic and silent. The Shaman met him at the gate, having received a message from the gods that he would be needed.
At first, Lorcan claimed that the child was a gift for the tribe from Flemeth. The Shaman took the baby only after Lorcan revealed to him the truth: the child was of his seed. The Shaman advised the younger man to return to the Mother of Vengeance to fulfill his deal with her. If he chose not to, then she might come after the tribe.
So, the young man returned to Flemeth’s servitude, and two years later, a baby girl was born with magic flowing through her veins. It was another two years before Flemeth deemed Lorcan to be fully trained in both magic and the written word.
He returned to the Chasind tribe to finish learning how to wield a sword, as he had been before he came into his magic so long ago.
Now:
Lorcan regrets his hot-headed decision to make a deal with Flemeth. He keeps an emotional distance between himself and everyone else, save for the Shaman for whom he has great respect.
The Shaman is the only other person who knows that Deren is Lorcan’s blood. For Lorcan, the boy is a physical manifestation of his deal with Flemeth. He is also a reminder of the family that Lorcan once possessed and believes that he can never have again, thinking himself to be cursed by his deal with the Mother of Vengeance.
