They were awkward at first.
It wasn’t Wen Ruohan’s first time being in a relationship, but this was the first time he’s ever felt this way about his partner. The shortening of his breath just at the mere sight of his lover, the clammy palms and the loud pounding of his heart. All of it was a new sensation to him. He didn’t truly understand it at first, but eventually he did and has come to love it. This feeling of being in love, Wen Ruohan loved it. Just as much as he loved Lan Qiren.
It hasn't been that long since they’ve been a couple either and every single moment with Lan Qiren has just been pure bliss for him. The lingering gazes during classes and the gentle brushing of fingers when passing by one another. Neither would have known that loving someone would be this beautiful had they not felt it from one another. And Wen Ruohan was glad that he got to feel this with Lan Qiren of all people.
Something as simple as holding hands was hard too.
Sometimes Lan Qiren would miss the opportunity to grab his lover’s hand in his. He loved feeling the warmth of the sun in his hands, to be wrapped around Wen Ruohan’s arms. It was such a small thing that he didn’t know could bring him so much happiness. Cloud Recesses was often cold and being in the presence of Wen Ruohan made him feel extremely warm inside. It was the type of warmth that he could get him addicted. He already was, but that wasn’t a problem.
This new and beautiful love blossoming between them was sweeter than even the ripest fruit. Wen Ruohan couldn’t get enough of it, even though he wasn’t a student of Cloud Recesses anymore. Because their relationship had been kept secret to many, there would be no reason for him to go to Cloud Recesses unless it was on official sect business. He would often jump on the opportunity to accompany his father on trips to Cloud Recesses and the first thing he would do is meet Lan Qiren in the back mountain. The smell of incense clinging on Lan Qiren’s robes had become his favorite scent. Hearing his voice after so long was like the melodious music he’s ever heard.
“I always look forward to seeing you, you know.” Wen Ruohan whispered into Lan Qiren’s ears as they lay down on the grassy field. “You should come to the Nightless City too sometime. I’d take you to all the best spots there and feed you all the most delicious delicacies we have.”
“With my brother heading off to Qishan, there wouldn’t be anyone but me left behind to manage the sect.” Lan Qiren said. “Having you come here, this would be the only place where we could meet like this.”
Wen Ruohan laughed. “I guess it is, but I’d like to take you to all my favourite places in my hometown too.” he said. He turned over to his side to wrap Lan Qiren in a hug then said, “I really love you so much.” He added a kiss on Lan Qiren’s nape too before nuzzling into it.
“And I feel the same.” Lan Qiren responded. “Maybe one day we could roam around Qishan with no care in the world.”
“And one day we would.” Wen Ruohan responded.
And even if it would take forever for that day to appear, the two of them still looked forward to it.
