“Hearing those words everyday just becomes… Normal. I’m just so used to it… It’s merely like going through the motions.” -Keiko Okami Todoroki
My name is Keiko Okami Todoroki. I am 12 years old. I am in my third year of middle school, my best friend is Izuku Midoriya, like him-I have no quirk. I’m a quirkless Todoroki… Ironic right? I have bright red hair like my father, Endeavor, I cut it myself so the ends of it meet my chin on the right side, the left side of my head is shaved, and the back of my hair ends at the bottom of my shoulder. I am 135 centimeters, Four feet and five inches according to America’s measuring system. Ah, I part Japanese and part American! I have dual citizenship for both countries! I am more fluent in my mother’s language-rather than Endeavor’s language, Japanese, despite me living here for most of my life..
I wear pants instead of skirts-and have absolutely zero regret breaking the uniform policy.
I met Izuku my first year of Middle school. I didn’t know him when we were children but he has told me all about his past with Bakugou Katsuki- Kacchan -as my little ray of sunshine likes to call him… Despite the verbal abuse he endured throughout the first year of middle school. Second year it got worse for Izuku and I… Kacchan started to hit Izuku without his quirk, at first… But within a few months it was with his quirk, Explosions, by this time I was taking all the blows meant for Izuku, always interrupting the two and keeping Izuku out of harm's way.. Izuku’s Mother, Inko Midoriya, was always taking pictures of our bruises for some reason during the first year… But when she continued this with my burn marks from Endeavor and Kacchan… They could easily be told apart honestly. By the third year of Middle school-this year-I stopped calling Bakugou “Kacchan”, sadly, Izuku keeps calling Bakugou this...
It hit me finally. She was gathering evidence- so this is why she is such a great lawyer -I blinked at my thoughts while walking beside Izuku together to the first class of our third school year. The homeroom teacher is an asshole… He won’t do anything about the bullying, and whenever Izuku reports it he gets detention with me for ‘ruining Bakugou’s chances of becoming a hero’. Damn asshole.. This is why I don’t trust adults, comparing him to my father thought makes him seem pretty HARMLESS in comparison to that man.
As you can tell… I’m pretty much DONE with this bullshit.
“Since you’re all third years, it’s time for you to think seriously about your future. I’ll pass out handouts for your future plans now, but...you’re all...pretty much planning to go into the hero course, right?” Everyone started to use their quirks, the only ones that didn’t were Bakugou, Izuku, and I… Izuku and I because we are quirkless. “Yes, yes, you all have wonderful Quirks! But using your powers at school is against the rules!” He chuckled while raising his hands into the air, making me tsk. Cause eyeballs being able to pop out of ones own head is an ‘excellent’ quirk..
“Teach! Don’t lump us all in the same group. I’m not gonna be stuck at the bottom with the rest of these rejects!” I let out a low groan from beside Izuku, the poor boy was trembling beside me in fear of Bakugou lashing out at one of us.
“What's this? Bakugou! You didn’t curse~!?” I grinned, making the ashen blonde boy wince a little from in his seat at me saying his last name. Ooooh, he’s not sure what to think of this change? I grinned more at this thought.
“That was uncalled for Katsuki!!” Many people shouted out in the class, making me sigh as I saw him return to his ‘normal self’.
“You all should shut up like the extras you are!” Katsuki snarled, one foot on top of his desk now, hands splayed out as crackles and pops could be heard, sparks coming from his hands before turning into loud explosions. I put my hands over Izuku’s ears to muffle the loud sound for him. He was always scared shitless around Balugou’s quirk lately.. Probably because of what Bakugou tried to do to Izuku only for me to take the hits with his quirk instead…
“Oh, if I remember correctly, you want to go to Yuuei High, right, Bakugo?” I hit my head against the top of my desk now. He better not mention Izuku and I to the class about wanting to go there as well… I have been teaching Izuku and Inko self defense lessons since the first year of Middle school. Inko has lost a lot of weight, and Izuku has gained quite a bit of lean muscle over the three years. I only knew of a few self defense moves, so Inko paid for everyone to take self defense classes once I ran out of moves to teach the two.. Seriously… He has an ego the size of a giant… Don’t boost it even more, teach… I sighed heavily, my hands by my head. Izuku calmed down, so I knew he wouldn’t panic as much anymore…
Apparently while I was deep in my thoughts the class had been muttering about the low acceptance rates that U.A had… I woke up as soon as I heard Bakugou leap onto the top of his desk with a slight jerk.
“That’s exactly why you guys are just extras!” He exclaimed loudly, small explosions popping from the palms of his hands. “I aced the mock test! I’m the only one at this school who could possibly get into U.A. I’ll definitely surpass All Might and become the top hero! My name will be inscribed on the list of top earners!” I blinked a few times then sighed heavily.
“Bakugou…” He flinched from on top of his desk, my voice was cold as ice, making the whole class fall silent. HELL. Even the teacher went quiet. “Get. The. Fuck. Off. Of. That. Desk. Now.” My tone held no room for argument-he did just that, he knew better than to piss me off, I could pack a hell of a punch when angry…
“Oh yeah, Midoriya and Todoroki, you two want to go to Yuuei., too, right?” I froze up a little, all eyes on Izuku and I. Izuku was silent as I tsked in annoyance.
“If anyone mentions the fact we are quirkless I won’t hesitate to strangle you idiots. Because they removed the rule that made anyone quirkless unable to attend Yuuei. So we have just as much of a chance of getting in like you…” I felt a scowl pull at my lips, sure enough everyone was silent… Bakugo looked like a pissed Pomeranian though.. It was kinda amusing. A bit life threatening… But highly amusing..
“Hey, Deku, and Shadow-freak! You are both below the rejects! You’re Quirkless! How can you even stand in the same ring as me?!” He screamed, palms igniting in small explosions once again, I stood in front of Izuku on pure instinct, a deadly silence enfolding.
“No, wait, Kacchan! It’s not like I’m trying to compete with you or anything!” I felt him grip the back of my shirt tightly with his hands, his tall frame cowering behind my small one. “Believe me! It’s just that it’s been my goal ever since I was little. And well… Kei and I won’t know unless we try!!!” He shouted over my shoulder, I was silent, glaring up into Bakugou’s raging crimson eyes, silently daring him to try and piss me off. I wasn’t in the mood for any of his shit today..
“Whaddya mean, unless you try?! Are you two taking the test for fun?! What the hell can you do? You’re both Quirkless!!” I punched him in the jaw, making him stumble back in surprise a little bit. I let out a tsk of annoyance. Everyone’s jaw had dropped, I didn’t have to look, I was used to many kinds of silences… This being one of them.
“Who the fuck do you think you are to tell us what to do?!” I snarled, storming up to the shocked ashen-blonde as I shoved him back by his chest with both hands and snapped out crossly. “ You are supposed to be our friend , Bakugou! ” I shoved him again back against the wall and gritted my teeth together. “All you’ve done is be a bully and a villain! ” I pulled back and turned to Izuku with a scoff. “Let’s go, Izu… We have more classes to attend to before the day ends..”
Classes flew by like a breeze-and since I had my nerd son -with me, it was becoming easier for me to learn Japanese, and Izuku was finding it easier to learn English with me.. Of course , everything has to end at some point…
“We’re not done talking yet, Deku.” Of course Bakugou was ignoring me, I stood in front of Izuku, who was trembling and I glared up into Bakugou’s crimson eyes. I am starting to wonder if I have a secret death wish..?
“Leave him the hell alone….” I slapped a stray hand that tried to grab Izuku’s hero notebook and scowled. “I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty you bastards….” A snarl left my throat as I shoved the explosive blonde back into his minions. I grabbed Izuku’s notebook and stuffed it in his backpack. “Izuku….” My voice was low, gaining the panicking boys attention swiftly. “You need to go…” I stressed the word need greatly. He needed to go.. He needed to get out of danger, I couldn’t hurt Bakugou too much while the boy was around-he would just tell me to stop. I blinked as I twisted to the right while leaning back, a right fist flying where my face had been-explosions popping out of Bakugou’s right hand. I gripped his wrist with my right hand and shoulder with my left before flinging him over my back and down onto the ground on his back, taking everyone by surprise. I panted softly, hands on my knees.
Bakugou didn’t move, possibly from the shock. I grabbed Izuku’s wrist and pulled the stunned boy after me, running down the halls and headed outside. “Izuku…” I turned and gave the taller boy my best glare, the top of my head just barely met under his chin. “When I say run …. You run .” I said dryly before smacking the dumbass in the back of his head with my right hand, a tsk of annoyance leaving my lips. I paused then petted his unnaturally soft and curly green hair. “What shampoo do you use, Izu…? Because there is no way that your hair is this naturally soft!” I exclaimed, making the taller boy blush in embarrassment.
“K-Kei….” He mumbled out, I was too engrossed with running my hand through his freakily soft hair, I didn’t stop until I heard a freaking purr leave Izuku. I was stunned, then I grinned devilishly at this newfound fact.
“Ooooooh~ Someone can purr like a cat?!” I was esxactic about learning this newfound fact about my now completely embarrassed Best Friend. Yep, blackmail material right there. I cackled in my head as I skipped home to Izuku, waving him a ‘goodbye’ once I walked him home. I turned and started to head for my… Ugh, I don’t even think of that place as a home.. It’s more of a joke than anything else really.. I stuck my hands in my pant pockets. I was always shunned by Endeavor-a man I still stubbornly called father for some damned reason when I opened my mouth to talk to him-it annoyed the hell out of me, that habit of calling him father HAD to go! No buts, no nothing about it.
I slipped my shoes off and silently went into my room, not bothering to say “I’m home!”, I learned long ago at the age of five that I wasn’t a family member-related to Shouto-san, Natsuo-san, and Fuyumi-san through our father only-was reason enough for them all to hate me apparently. I wish I could say I got a bit of special privileges since I was quirkless, but that wasn’t the case.. I used to do all the chores to try and get on Rei-sans ‘good-side’ so-to-speak, but it never worked… And since the mother of the three hated my guts even more after Touya left home… Well let’s just say “Like Mother like Daughter” comes to mind with Fuyumi-san.
When Rei-san was put in the mental hospital for burning Shouto-san’s left side of his face with boiling water, I wasn’t really surprised.. Everyone has a breaking point, I didn’t let it show because I knew the siblings would lash out at me even more if I showed I was relieved she left. Eventually, Rei-san was getting better, Shouto-san, and everyone else but Endeavor and I visited her… Why would I want to visit the woman who made my childhood living hell , to put it simply. I sighed at my thoughts and shook my head to clear it. I started to work on my assignments once more, pencil scratching on the paper was soothing to me, I never really understood why exactly, I think it has something to do with Izuku’s habit of writing down everything about quirks.. That habit soothes me, along with his muttering habit.. I can’t say that Izuku knows of my situation with my “family”, because I’ve always made sure to keep my mouth shut tight when it came to my own problems.
I listened to Izuku’s and helped him regain some trust in adults. He has finally started to tell his mother about the bullying he endured during pre-school, she knew about that but let him continue explaining, and then he told her about how the class-including Kacchan-treated him, he also explained to her how I had become an unpaid “bodyguard/new best friend” to Izuku. That last day of last summer was fun to say the least, Kacchan got a harsh scolding from his mother and the one he so dearly loved to call “auntie”... I may or may not have been laughing my ass off that day that I fell from the chair, wiping tears from my eyes. Yes. Everyone DID look at me like I was insane. Everyone but my dear little sunshine of a son-Izuku.
A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips from the memory. A sigh left them as soon as I saw Shouto-san’s outline in front of my sliding door. I pushed my wheely chair back and leaned back against it. “It’s not locked, Shouto-san…” I said coldly, his outline flinched a little from my cold tone then opened the door slowly. He put his right clenched hand to his mouth and cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Tainte-I mean, Keiko-san… Father wants you in the training room as soon as your homework is done…” A sigh left my lips, and closed my turquoise gaze, black overtaking all the color as I fell silent then opened them, the bland color of the room taking up my sight as I looked at the wall in front of me.
“Training clothes…?” I muttered lowly in question, some days Endeavor didn’t want to hurt me as much with his fire, so there was ‘training clothes’ to keep my skin from getting burned.
“I’m afraid not… He didn’t say anything about them….” I heard the mumble and got up, stretching my arms over my head one by one as I walked past Shouto and out of the room.
“Tell him I’ll be in the training room as soon as I get a drink of water….” I mumbled out then headed for the kitchen, knowing Fuyumi was still at work, thank fuck for that I don’t know if I’d be able to take brusies and third-degree burns at the same time … I gulped down some water then walked to the training room, seeing Shouto walk out of it, he glanced at me briefly for a few moments, his right grey eye and left turquoise eye met with my own turquoise gaze. He looked away first, making my heart sink in my chest. I was hoping he might save me from another round of flames today… But like always it doesn't happen.. I don’t why I keep thinking my elder brother might save me… I thought bitterly while pulling my bright red hair up into a tight bun atop my head. I stepped into the room… It’s useless for me to hope for something good to actually happen to me.. I stood still, allowing the flames to hit my body-I didn’t scream, cry or make any sort of sound that could be made out into weakness…
This went on for… You know what? I don’t actually know how long this went on..
The training was hell. That’s all I can find to describe it… In fact, I wouldn’t even call it training.. I limped to my room silently then sat down on my bed with a wince of pain. I reached under it then pulled out the first aid kit and started to wrap my arms up once putting the cream for burns on the third-degree burns.. Without proper treatment I knew it would scar… It always did. And Endeavor didn’t want to bother taking me to the hospital. “Waste of time” he said. I let out a scoff and removed my burnt long sleeve shirt. I paused at seeing the large third degree burn going across my back diagonally from the back of my right shoulder, ending down at the beginning of the left side of my hip. A frown pulled at my lips from in the mirror. “This year is going to be a long one….” I sighed heavily, shoulders sagging then leaned my head out, I wouldn’t be able to reach this one by myself.
Upon noticing Shouto walk down the halls I said swiftly. “Shouto-san! Help me out with this cream here, I can’t reach my back!” The one that was supposed to be my elder half brother sighed and shook his head while walking into my room. He froze up, upon seeing all the scars on my back-most from Endeavor’s fire attacks-and some scars from when Bakugou tried to attack Izuku but only to have me take the hits. So he does feel guilty about how he treats me.. Good. “Ooookay.. Enough starring, I just need help with putting the cream on the long third-degree line across my back..” I said dryly, the burns hurt like a bitch.. For some fire burns might sting, feel like a thousand needles were pricking your skin where the burn is, or, in my case it felt like a wave of ice had been dumped onto burn marks.. Personally I think what I was feeling right now was a good description for what kind of pain I felt..
A small sigh left my lips as soon as I felt the soothing cream being smoothed onto my, slightly blistering, third degree burn that resides on my back. My turquoise eyes fluttered closed for a few brief moments before opening once again. I wrapped my chest, down to the top of my hips now, in clean and fresh bandages. I glanced at Shouto, “Thank you, Shouto-san..” I mumbled out softly. I heard him retreat out of my room, closing the door behind him silently. I sat down on my futon then curled up into a ball, on my left side, vision black I finally fell into a restless sleep.
