Kate walks over to Mallory's bed like she's afraid to startle her and sits on the floor beside it, grabbing Mallory's hand and kissing the back of it. Mallory's eyes water but Kate tries to be still. She pictures all the times the roles were reversed after a night terror or a bad trip or the time her mom suggested chicken for dinner, all the times Mallory had held her and stood up for her, and then tries to be here.
"You don't have to tell me, but you can."
