Belly comes down the steps, dropping the blanket on the cobblestone to frown at him, beautiful brow furrowed. He wants to press at the crease with his thumb, iron it out until she's peaceful. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah." He's still breathless. In lieu of rubbing at his chest, he's gone back to picking at the label of his beer bottle. He focuses on it so he doesn't have to look at her. Traitor echoes in his mind on loop. "Yeah, I'm good."
"You don't have to lie." She's still watching him warily. He wishes she wouldn't. It's harder to get his mind and heart behaving when she's in front of him, looking at him with those big brown eyes. At the same time, he never wants her to stop looking at him like he's worthy of her attention at all.
Fuck, he really needs to call his therapist.

The gentle clinking of cutlery on china comes to a sudden halt. Nobody dares utter a word as their eyes flick to one another, a silent question filling the room.
