this is genuinely so cleverly written, I sat down to start reading it on my phone then moved to my laptop and only got up twice in the entire time it took me to read, comment, and figure out some of the puzzles. I think it's been almost 12 hours, maybe closer to 10 but I don't remember in all honesty.

“Can you tell me what happened?” asks Noel, carefully.
“I don’t,” chokes out Misha. His voice sounds wrong, like it doesn’t belong to him. He remembers how his birth father used to yell when he was mad. He hates how his voice goes up in pitch instead of down when he’s upset, gains some pathetic squeak instead of gravel. “I don’t know how to - explain it.”
“Okay,” says Noel, nodding, as though any of this is fucking okay. “Well, do you know what it looks like?”
“Um,” says Misha, helplessly. He has some vague intention of stalling until more words are willing to come out of his mouth but none do.
