“It’s pointless. I’ve already told you as much.” Akechi rolls his eyes and digs a crumpled lens rag out of his pocket. “After I’m gone, none of those things will matter anymore. If you think that your usual brand of brainless sentimentality will work on me, then--”
Just then, as Akechi unfurls the glasses cleaning rag, something clatters to the ground between them. Their heads turn to follow the sound in unison, and both discover the source at the same time -- an incredibly smooth, thumb-sized rock.
They raise their eyes again, steel gray meeting dark auburn.
Akechi’s Adam’s apple bobs under the collar of his turtleneck. “...Please let me explain.”Sometimes, if a rock is smooth enough, it can drag a man out of hiding and force him into a secret shared custody agreement with the guy he's hiding from -- and what Yusuke doesn't know can't hurt him.

Summary
“I don’t suppose you need help getting there?” Armin said. His gaze fixed on Jean again, watching for a reaction. His eyes were a stark cornflower blue. “I was actually planning on making the trip myself.”
Really? Jean wanted to say. The journey between regions wasn’t the safest, and Armin—a good few inches shorter than Jean was, thin as a rail, and with hands marked only by the callouses of penmanship—looked like he wouldn’t survive more than a day outside the guarded walls of a city.
He couldn’t disguise the incredulous rise in his voice, but he did say, “Oh, what for?” He grinned. “Planning on joining the King’s Guard yourself?”
(Medieval Fantasy AU: Armin wants to find his friends who went missing from Shiganshina some months ago. Jean wants to finish his knighthood training in the capital, where he stands the greatest chance of joining the King's Guard. He needs a navigator, and Armin needs an escort, so it's a good thing they're both going in the same direction.)
