    The most common defence of Tony Stark against the narcissism charge is the wormhole sequence in The Avengers*. He nearly died to save New York. Surely a narcissist couldn't do that?*

    Researchers at the University of Southampton have a name for what Tony did. It's called narcissistic heroism — a heightened sense of self-importance expressed through improving the social world. It is peer-reviewed, validated across eleven samples and over five thousand participants. It is not a contradiction of narcissism. It is a recognised dimension of it.

    This meta applies the DSM-5 clinical criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder to Tony Stark's depicted behaviour, draws the distinction between fear of loss and genuine empathy (and explains why the Age of Ultron vision demonstrates the former not the latter), and examines the developmental psychology behind why some fans read Steve Rogers' protection of Bucky as betrayal rather than as exactly what good friendship requires.

    In 1995, Umberto Eco — Italian novelist, semiotician, and childhood survivor of Italian fascism — published "Ur-Fascism," identifying fourteen features common to fascist ideology across its historical variations. He did not write it about Tony Stark. He did not need to.

    This meta applies Eco's framework to Tony Stark's ideology as depicted across the MCU — from "a bigger stick" in Iron Man to "a suit of armor around the world" in Age of Ultron to EDITH in Far From Home.
    It examines the prima nocta joke, the treatment of Wanda Maximoff as a Weapon of Mass Destruction, the Lagos witch hunt, and the moment Tony Stark's "peace through superior firepower" philosophy is placed in direct dialogue with HYDRA's founding principles.
    It asks what we call a man who believes security requires the pre-emptive elimination of threats, that his judgment supersedes collective decision-making, and that acceptable casualties are simply the cost of his version of order.

    Eco had a word for it.

    Zemo orchestrated a lot of things to get Tony and Steve into that room with that monitor, and he made a lot of assumptions along the way. He was right about some things, wrong about others.

    His biggest mistake was making any assumptions about Tony Stark. (This tends to be everyone's biggest mistake.)
