Her eyes, however, did not change, still shrouded by pale fog and trained unswervingly on him.
“That is what the warmbloods call me,” she said, in strangely accented Zik; he couldn’t place where she was from, but it didn’t sound like any voice he was used to hearing in Zikandur’s capital. “You keep your Zaterran name though you were turned out from our home. Did you never think to take another?”
“Many times,” he replied. “I’ve had several names in my life, but Syzoth was the one thing Zaterra gave me that I got to keep. I’m not about to let anyone take it from me now.”

Kung Lao had never thought less of Liu Kang because he wasn’t destined to be a champion. Liu was just as skilled and twice as fierce as any other fighter at the Wu Shi Academy, in all ways worthy of the title. But the price for that distinction would have been far too high, much higher than Lao would ever ask Liu Kang to pay for any reason. No, Liu was better where he was, doing what he did—training with Healer Lê and Master Cho in equal measure. He was amazing at maintaining balance between the two disciplines, so good at it, and patient and smart and insightful as well.
But. Occasionally. Kung Lao felt the difference between them.
