    Summary

At 46, Dr. Hannibal Lecter is the picture of perfection. He moves effortlessly through Baltimore’s high society, but among the wealthy, appearances are everything, and questions have begun to surface: Why has he never married? Why no children? Behind the veiled glances, judgment emerges—an unwelcome spotlight for a man with bodies in his basement.

When the FBI stumbles upon a crime scene in rural Maryland, they find a single survivor: a deeply traumatized four-year-old girl. The child is clearly not ordinary, something hides within her silence, something deeply concerning. She has seen things she shouldn’t have and lived when others had not, and when she lays eyes on Hannibal Lecter, she doesn’t flinch, she clings.

If society demands the performance of family, perhaps this little girl is the perfect solution. Perhaps, if she carries a darkness like his, she is something even more precious than that: a mirror.

His daughter is a week away from graduating college when a bundle of letters arrives. The first thing he notices is that the paper is worn, weathered by time and close to falling apart. The second thing he notices is the newer, small letter on top.

Marge is in the kitchen, and he can smell a hint of cinnamon and warm bread as he unfolds the letter. Dear Major Gale Cleven, I am writing to inform you of the passing of my husband, Major John Egan. I believe you were close -

    -

Or Gale "Buck" Cleven survives the War, and he goes home to his girl. He gets the life with the white house and blue shutters and the daughter who has never been covered in so much blood and mud you forget what it's like to be clean. He gets his life, and he forgets the hell he survived. Twenty years later he gets the letters Bucky wrote and never sent.

    Summary

Sweaty, sticky and tired, Gene sat up with the feeling he was not going to fall asleep again, no matter what.

With his eyes closed, Gene tried to hold on to the last dregs of the dream, to remember the details, and how it had made him feel.

He listened to the crickets screaming outside the window and the screech of a passing bird far in the sky and he tried to calm his beating heart.

“You’re supposed to be? Annie, where are you?”

She bit her lip, half-tempted to lie just to keep that disappointed tone out of Dick’s voice. “Grand Central Station?”

“Grand – New York? You're in New York City. Right now?"

(Ann only wanted to see her brother. The can of worms being opened was probably inevitable.)
