  There was something in the child’s eyes that made him look older than he was supposed to be. A burden, an indescribable grief. The set of his shoulders appear much too heavy for a child to have, as if he carries the weight of the world.

  The boy holds his gaze, resolute.

  And Jigorou finds himself unable to turn away.
