Summary
Regret is often reserved for the benefit of those who have space. Space to reflect. To consider missteps in an attempt to grow. The purpose of regret is betterment.
That’s what Jiang Cheng’s father would say to him, one of the countless times he advised Jiang Cheng to work toward self actualization, as he called it. Jiang Cheng tries not to scoff out loud, thinking back on the bullshit his father would lecture him on. All in service of betterment.
The betterment of Jiang Cheng as a person, as a brother, as a partner, as a son, as an heir.
To be better. To be more than what he is. To just be more.
Because Jiang Cheng is–was–never enough for Jiang Fengmian.
Or: Jiang Cheng’s father passes away unexpectedly, and as he plans the funeral with his family, all the trauma of his childhood feels more present than ever, destroying the tightly wound control he keeps on his emotions. It takes learning that a long held affection for Wei Wuxian and an old flame with Lan Wangji is, and always has been, reciprocated from both of them to help him through this dark and confusing time.
