Summary
The fire crackled low in the camp as the Company of Thorin Oakenshield settled in for a damp evening in the Wild. The day had been long, the ponies were weary, and the stew was thin. Bilbo Baggins, shivering slightly under his traveling cloak, was attempting to balance a wooden bowl of broth on his knee while adjusting his seat on a particularly jagged rock.
A sudden slip of the hand, a muttered gasp, and a splash of boiling-hot liquid landed squarely on Bilbo’s thigh

"Osh'ra kaza-dhumal, baggins-shat!"The words cut through the night like a whip. They were gutteral, sharp, and flowed with a strange, rhythmic staccato that sounded nothing like the soft, melodic tones of the Common Tongue or the melodic trills of Elvish. It sounded old,older than the Shire, rooted in the deep earth and the rustle of ancient roots.
The camp went silent. Dwalin’s hand froze on his whetstone. Thorin looked up from his map. Ori and Balin, who were mid-discussion about the lineage of the Iron Hills, stared at the Hobbit with wide, unblinking eyes.

Bilbo, who had been contentedly blowing smoke rings with his pipe, paused. He blinked, tilting his head as he looked at Thorin. He rolled the sounds of the word around in his mind, but they didn't land anywhere familiar.
"I beg your pardon, Thorin," Bilbo said politely, tapping his pipe against a stone. "You said there was much... mer-der? Is that a type of weather? Or perhaps a particularly nasty form of mountain goat?"
The circle went silent. Dwalin, who had been sharpening a dagger, stopped mid-stroke. Balin adjusted his spectacles, peering at Bilbo with genuine curiosity.
