Summary
There’s a lake several blocks down where her apartment is. She’s never been.
But today, she closes the door to her apartment building and heads off in a light jog. The sidewalk becomes a river of people that she skirts through as she heads down a road she’s never been before. People step around her, and she does the same. A child tugs on their mother’s hand. A man carries his child on his shoulders. A teenager puts their earbuds in and speeds up their pace. Things happen all the time. Things happen every minute.
Her footsteps slow when she reaches a large park full of mostly-dead grass and a wooden sign that she assumes used to hold the park’s name. Instead, it’s weather beaten and worn and impossible to read. A nameless park with a nameless lake. Fitting, she thinks to herself as she trudges forward.
The lake is almost frozen over. It’s winter, she remembers. The brush around it is dead. The trees are nearly bare. The remaining leaves are brown or a muddy shade of orange. Everything seems lifeless here.
“Hi,” she says aloud to nobody at all as her feet come to a halt. “I’m here.”
