Summary
This story follows Nick and Amy, a couple who have been married for five years. They have lost their jobs, moved to a small town in Missouri, and their marriage is falling apart. On the morning of their fifth anniversary, Amy disappears. The police find evidence of a struggle, and Nick becomes the prime suspect. But Nick knows that he did not kill his wife. He also knows that Amy is not the woman he married. As he investigates, he discovers that Amy comes from a long line of Assassins. Her ancestors have been hiding in plain sight for generations, and Amy has inherited their skills. She has been planning her disappearance for months, and she has left a trail of clues that all point to Nick. He has to find her before the police arrest him, and he has to decide if he still wants to be married to a woman who is capable of destroying him.

Summary
Nina is a ballerina in New York City. She is twenty-six years old and she has been dancing since she was five. She lives with her mother Erica, who is a former ballerina who gave up her career to raise Nina. Erica is loving and controlling and she has shaped every aspect of Nina's life. Nina is cast as the Swan Queen in a new production of Swan Lake. The director, Thomas, tells her that she is perfect for the White Swan but that she needs to find her dark side for the Black Swan. Nina does not know how to be dark because she has never been allowed to be anything but good. She meets a new dancer named Lily who seems to have everything that Nina lacks confidence, freedom, a body that does not need to be controlled. Nina becomes obsessed with Lily, and she starts to lose the boundary between reality and fantasy. She starts to see her grandmother in her dreams, and her grandmother tells her about the Creed. Nina does not understand, but she is desperate, so she listens.
