Mercury's trot slowed as soon as they entered the main street, but that didn't stop people from staring at them. It was hardly surprising, as it was surely unusual to see strangers on a random afternoon in a town that seemed almost abandoned with its smell of strong liquor, conformity, and protective hostility toward what little calm remained. Perhaps people thought Jayce was there to steal, to attack at any moment and flee as quickly as he had arrived. But he had real issues to resolve.

“Naim!”
A hand clamps down on his wrist and Naim’s brain flatlines. He doesn’t so much decide on his next actions as he does feel himself, all at once, curl his fist, spin on the balls of his feet, and punch Not-Ryan as hard as he can in the cheek. Wild-eyed and breathing erratically, Naim hears the entity shout in pain, watches it stumble back, and he freezes.
3 times they hurt each other, and 1 time they manage not to.
