    The man lifts the stick of tanghulu to his lips. Out darts a small pink tongue that swipes across the candied hawthorn. Lan Wangji’s breath hitches, riveted as the man draws back and licks the red of his wicked smile. Then, he leans forward, and slips the top candy into his mouth, shaping his lips around the fruit and sucking lightly, languorously, before nipping at the sugar and pulling it off the stick with a drag of his lips. It pops off easily, flecks of sugar crumbling onto his sleeve, sparkling like snow.

    As if aware of his effect on Lan Wangji, the man grins, victorious. Turning, the man throws out the sleeve of his cloak, flicking off the shards of sugar, and twirls the stick of tanghulu in his other hand. With a flourish, he rejoins the crowd and melts into the shadows, disappearing from view.

    It’d been easy, effortless, natural.

    It’d driven Lan Wangji insane.

    Wei Wuxian purred happily and immediately dropped down in to his lap and turned so his back was facing him instead to make it easier for Lan Wangji to groom him. The movement brings him face to face with his children and his heart melts.

    Wei Wuxian melted against him, barely feeling anything other than the occasional gentle tug. The Wei Wuxian of his childhood would be envious of him if he could see him now; shedding season had always been a pain in the ass. He could never quite reach some of the itches on his back when the fur grew too clumped and matted together before falling out. Now, he had his beautiful dragon to get it all for him while he got to just lay there like a well-pampered noodle.

    Worry thrummed under his skin as he took his position near the door, far from the front of the room where the Dragon Prince allegedly sat. Wei Wuxian could not yet see any of the royals that they were performing for, adding curiosity to the mess of emotions that coiled in the pit of his stomach.

    Drums began their steady beat. Along with the other performers, he drew his sword, pointing it upward, parallel to his body in the starting position.

    No matter his fears, no matter his current feelings of inadequacy, it didn’t matter anymore. One lesson remained consistent between acrobatics and dancing: the show must go on.

    “Er-gege,” Wei Wuxian flutters his eyelashes, his nine tails springing forth and dancing around him in delight. Lan Wangji adores the way Wei Wuxian lets his tails out around him. A huge sign of trust from the fox.

    “I’ve corrupted you, haven’t I?” he teases the dragon as he leans into his personal space. “Before you would scold me and drag me back by the scruff of my neck! Now, you’re sneaking out with me!” Wei Wuxian throws his head back as he laughs as Lan Wangji’s face softens.

    “Mn,” Lan Wangji hums in agreement. “I have been corrupted.”
