Summary
His hair had felt dry and his skin raw. The smoke from their shift had seeped into his muscles and was infecting his veins. The lights were too bright. The sirens too loud. His bones had felt brittle and his brain wouldn’t shut the fuck up no matter what he tried. Over and over his thoughts ran through his head and stirred up all his doubts and insecurities that he’d found himself swallowing back tears more times than he cared to count.
Then Eddie had held out his hand to him in the locker room at the end of his shift and Buck had taken it because taking Eddie’s hand was as easy as taking a breath.
Buck needs his mind to turn off for a little while and Eddie is happy to help with that.

Dr. Diaz set the chart down on the counter and pulled on a pair of nitrile gloves. Man, those are some big hands, he observed absently. The snap of the latex against his wrist made Buck’s stomach flip. “You’re here for a pelvic ultrasound today, looks like. Transabdominal and transvaginal... mhm. You’ve had one before?”
“N-no.” Buck’s voice came out smaller than he intended. “It’s, uh, my first time.”
In which, Buck accidentally squirted on doctor Eddie during an ultrasound.

Summary
Steve won’t ever be kept and cared for in the way he craves. He won’t ever be held like he’s something small and precious and breakable. He won’t ever be treated softly by virtue of his designation.
He won’t ever have kids in the way that he so desperately wants to.
He won’t ever be an omega.
And if he stays a beta, he can’t be Eddie’s true mate, either. He can’t be his mate at all: the bite won’t stick. The scar won’t manifest and neither will the bond. Their body chemistry won’t allow it. Any attempt at a claim will slide off of his skin like droplets of water and heal right up.

Summary
The guy looks like he’s in the process of leaving, too. He also has a goodie bag clutched in his hand so he must have just presented, same as Steve. He’s tall and skinny and his hair is a long frizzy nightmare; he’s wearing beat up white Reeboks and a torn up black shirt and Steve somehow instantly recognizes him. Something heavy seeps into his stomach. It must be dread.
Of course the first alpha Steve encounters after his presentation heat is Eddie Munson. There’s probably some kind of deep irony embedded into the whole situation, but he didn’t really pay attention to that unit of English, and even if he did he’s not sure he’d even be able to put it all into coherent words over the pounding of his head.
