Summary
Ivory Hill was never the picture of stability—and within his first week alone, Justin Lawson had already run afoul of what he considered the worst colleagues imaginable.
Malcolm Rochester held the mayor in the palm of his hand, and Lawson, regrettably, was saddled with the senator’s son as an assistant. One might presume the post of deputy mayor would afford a measure of authority. Clearly not. This district of Concordia was under the thumb of what could only be described as the longest-standing disgrace to ever stain the city.
One truth soon became obvious: the Rochesters were not to be crossed—an enemy to be kept close.Lawson was certain that there were no exceptions. The Rochesters were all the same—ruthlessly ambitious, hungry for control, and more than willing to corrupt the entire population if it served their twisted agenda. He had long since ceased entertaining the hope that the apple might fall far from the tree.
And then there was Leopold Rochester.

Summary
Given the liberty of these people, Lawson had seen how anything seemed possible once it was in their hands. The moment the wrong intuition took root, swords, or rather, pistols, were soon crossed. Bullets flew towards intended targets, yet it often struck the unsuspecting. Many bridges had burned, and the town of Crimson Banks was nearly reduced to ashes. No one was shielded from such unrest—not even the lawmen who sought to use their authority to preserve the peace that the community had long been known for.

Summary
Justin Lawson was sworn into the office of mayor making promises to his fellow Concordians. One of them was, through any means necessary, to eradicate the influence and power that the Rochester family had on Concordia. To him, witnessing Larry, Malcolm, and Horatio be condemned to prison was not enough. And shortly into his regime, he made up his mind regarding what to do with the Rochesters still alive.
Bernadine, still struggling to unpack the weight and grief of her family's destruction, and Archie, trying to find some purpose and aim in his life after his father's arrest, are themselves imprisoned along with Rockley, Larry, and Malcolm. In one cell, in a dungeon with no other prisoners.
And then the interrogations start. The Justice Corps and, by extension Mayor Lawson, are after something.
And they have determined that every member of the family will be sharing the same fate.
