Xie Lian pulled Hong-er into his arms, and small hands gripped the back of his robes. He combed his fingers through Hong-er's hair and resigned himself to the feeling that came over him as the boy clung to him and cried. "It'll be alright," he promised. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have left you alone."
Leaving the responsibility for Hong-er to other people would never have worked. It was Xie Lian whom Hong-er had followed to the palace, and it was him that he looked up to and placed his trust in. It was only Xie Lian who could keep him here.-*-
It only takes a split-second decision to check in on Hong-er after the fire at the Holy Royal Pavilion to reveal to Xie Lian just how badly he is needed. He postpones his travel plans and takes Hong-er with him to the palace. But neither Xie Lian nor Hong-er are prepared for the challenges the future holds for them, even as they steadily gravitate towards each other.

Summary
Xie Lian had been in many perilous situations during his banishment. There really was no way around it. Similarly, even if he could get around it, his luck was abysmal. He often found himself in secluded places with only one village after several weeks of travel, forced to accept his fate or to keep walking without finding another civilization just as long. Even now, after realizing he was about be sacrificed—the people here weren’t just worshipers, they were cultists!—his luck struck again during his escape, and he tripped right over a tree root and tumbled into a ditch. It was a place where he was quickly reminded that he was immortal, not invulnerable. Xie Lian resigned himself to rotting and dying in the ravine, quiet and sick, only to be halfway into an infectious coma when he saw sparkles of silver flood the area! And a strange man!
What was even stranger was the person’s unwavering focus on Xie Lian, and by extension, the history of human sacrifice that riddled the god’s very existence. It was rather nerve-racking!
(or: a runaway human sacrifice falls into a ravine, doesn’t get sacrificed, and actually meets the person he was being sacrificed to anyways. in a totally less violent and murderous way!)

Summary
Hua Cheng stood before him, but he was not alone.
Opposing Hua Cheng was a young soldier clad in worn armor, his face hidden behind a pale smiling mask. Despite the mask’s fixed expression, the fury beneath it was unmistakable. He drove his blade forward again and again with fierce determination, each strike fueled by confusion, rage, and an unyielding instinct to protect.
At the same time, Hua Cheng’s free hand was occupied.
He pushed his palm against a small child’s bandaged face, gripping firmly to keep the boy from throwing himself into the fight. The child, no older than ten, twisted and kicked with wild, furious energy, his small boots repeatedly trying to stomp Hua Cheng’s shins.
OR: After confiscating a talisman from the Ghost Market, Hua Cheng's consciousness is divided into three pieces: Current Hua Cheng, Wu Ming, and Hong-er. Xie Lian must spend time with each of his husband's iterations, helping them confront their unresolved traumas, in order to restore Hua Cheng’s unified consciousness.
