Summary
Droplets of dark blood ran down the side of his neck, his breathing heavy, his vision tunneled. An unfamiliar figure stood before him. Not one of those filthy traitors threatening to violate his wife, no, different somehow. He was certain.
A young man, eyes shining with fear and recognition, body braced for attack.
And then his hands fell slack.
"...Father?"
Odysseus froze, because he was a father, and this man couldn't be his son because his son was at home, far away from the carnage and cruelty of the world, cradled in his mother's, dearest Penelope's arms, perhaps sucking on his thumb or wailing for his mother's breast and tender kiss, and this man couldn't be his son because that would imply that Odysseus hadn't seen the child grow up, hadn't seen his wonderful, beautiful child turn into a bright young man and that would mean he was no father of that child, was no father at all, was just like his own father-
And then, there was nothing.
