They hadn't put a word to what this was. Boyfriend was too immature, partner didn't go far enough, lover was just incorrect, and soulmate - they'd both claimed to have found their soulmates in the past and look where that got them. Paul suspected that a word for what he and John were to each other didn't exist. John was John and Paul was Paul, with all that came with them, and they'd still managed to get back to each other and find more than they'd thought they would have.
Following their reunion in the mid-1980s, Paul and John start spending more time together in New York City.

Summary

Summary
Aziraphale susses out Crowley's pre-Fall identity, as the Archangel Raphael. With this, he must rethink everything he thought he knew about the last six thousand years, about his own identity and his friend's, and even the Ineffable Plan. There is a fight, expressions of fear and hurt, reconciliation, yearning and confusion, and the sorts of questions that by all rights should cause an angel to Fall.
Also, at one point, Crowley admits he once lied about breeding rats for demonic ends.

There was a forceful, anxious kick in Aziraphale’s chest. Oh, God, he was actually going to talk about it. Neither of them dared to for 6,000 years.
Crowley tossed his head to the side. “I mean…The last few years, not really. And I know why we’ve had to pretend, of course. That’s obvious.” His eyes lowered to the floor. “Can’t ever forget about that, can I?” he said under his breath.

After being punished in Heaven for being in love as angels, Aziraphale and Crowley spend the next 6,000 years pretending their relationship never happened.
