She looks back down at the cassette.
One side, 51 minutes, her whole heart.
Nicole Haught stands on the lawn with her stomach in knots, her blood rushing in her ears, a boombox in her hands, and her heart on her sleeve.
Waverly Earp hangs out from her bedroom window and stares at her with wide eyes.

“You're sure you can't call me tomorrow?” Waverly asks for the fifth time.
Nicole sighs heavily, biting down hard on her bottom lip. “Baby-”
“I know. I know,” Waverly interrupts. She makes a frustrated noise over the line. “It's just… it's my birthday.”

“I’m sorry,” Nicole breathes out. “Christmas is just... really far away.”
“I know,” Waverly says softly. “But, like, it’s only… 3 months from now. I’ll be home way quick and I’m gonna spend all Christmas break with you, okay?”
“We got through academy training,” Nicole says, more to remind herself than Waverly.
“For sure,” Waverly agrees. “We can get through to Christmas.”

“A race, of course.”

He taps his gloves together and rolls his shoulders. His neck is already shiny with a thin layer of sweat. “No,” he admits.

Wynonna glances over her shoulder. “That guy is a wasteoid.”
“I’m going to waste him,” Nicole growls.
Wynonna snorts. “You mean more than you already-” She stops quickly, glancing at Waverly. “Violence is never the answer?”
“It is if the question is: What do you do with Champ Hardy?” Nicole says.

Summary
Distantly, Nicole can hear flatware falling to the floor like metallic raindrops on a tin roof; she hears Waverly gasp; she hears George Michael hit a high note. But all she can see is Gus’s eyes, wide and round, and the way her knuckles go white around the red rag she’s holding. She takes one step towards Nicole, a palm flat against the counter to hold herself up.

Summary
“Are we going treasure hunting?”
Waverly smiles wide enough that Nicole is afraid her face is going to break in half, the long way. “Can we?”
Nicole nods eagerly. Treasure hunting. She used to hunt for buried treasure in her backyard. At Easter, her dad would hide eggs all over the place - in the back and out in the front, up in trees and under the car bumpers. She and Nathan would race to see who could collect the most eggs the quickest, and the winner got the extra slice of bacon at brunch. She looks at Wynonna excitedly. Finally, an adventure. Wynonna has been wanting an adventure. But here it is, and Wynonna is shaking her head.

Summary
Waverly slaps her hand down over the dashboard clock. “I just need five minutes. Maybe less if you decide you want to wear a tux, because then we would only have to match your cummerbund to my dress.” She tips her head to the side. “Unless you wanted a vest? Because I saw the vests at the Sears…” She trails a finger down Nicole’s front. “You would look good in either.”
Nicole laughs. “Why would I need to match anything to your dress?”
Waverly pauses for a second. “For prom,” she says slowly.

Summary
Nicole takes a step back. “No. No, no, no. He’s coming home for Christmas. You’ll see,” she insists. “And when he does, he’s going to put that ornament on. And the star, too.” She stands as tall as she can, crossing her arms over her chest. “So we can’t put those on. I won’t do it.”
Her mom stares at her for a moment, her lips pursed. “Okay,” she finally says, her voice soft. “We’ll put them aside for now.”
Nicole nods sharply and takes the red car ornament off the coffee table, holding it protectively in her hands.
Nathan is wrong, she thinks again. He has to be wrong.

Summary
Nicole groans. “No. No, no, no. Absolutely not.” She leans away when Waverly reaches for her. “I don’t want to go to some Richie Rich’s house in too-tight shoes and sip sparkling apple cider when I could be here, playing Styx and Def Leppard, wearing jeans and one of my new flannels, drinking as much Orange Crush as I want to, and making out against the jukebox when the clock strikes twelve.”
“One,” Waverly starts. “We’re drinking champagne this year. Because I’m old enough now.”
Nicole lifts her eyebrow. “And two?”
Waverly’s shoulders sag. “I want to?”
Nicole starts shaking her head firmly.

Summary
“Anyway,” Nathan says, leaning out of his seat. He grabs the door and pulls it shut. “If you want my lawn mowing business, it’s yours,” he says to Nicole. “You can even have the trailer I made. It’ll hook on the back of your bicycle, right around the seat base.”
Nicole is about to say ‘no,’ that she doesn't want his discarded lawn business. She looks at Waverly, though, and Waverly is still staring at Nathan’s car, her eyes wistful.
“Sure,” she hears herself saying. “I’ll take it over.”

Summary
Nicole watches the way her hand curls protectively around the milk carton on her tray. “Tucker. That’s his name, right?” Nicole asks, pointing at the skinny kid with the big glasses.
Waverly looks over to the other table slowly and then nods.
Nicole keeps staring at Waverly, watching the way she keeps her head down and her arms close to her body. It’s the same way Nathan looked whenever Jimmy Byers came down to the Little League fields and gave Nathan a hard time. She looks at the empty slot on Waverly’s tray, where her juice would be, and then at Tucker’s tray as he sets it down on another table.

Summary
“I wanted to go over our plans for the week again,” Waverly says.
Nicole groans. “We went over it a hundred times yesterday.”
“I forgot about Girls’ Night with Chrissy and Rosita.” Waverly reaches into her front pocket and pulls out a folded piece of paper. She smoothes it out on the kitchen table, right over the article Nicole is reading, and points to the addition at the bottom of the list. “So we’ll need to move our movie night around.”
Nicole groans again. “I don’t want to go see that movie.”

Summary
“Listen,” Wynonna says, putting the pencil down. “Imagine if you had a girlfriend. We could go on double dates. Doc is going to get his Class 7-Learner’s permit soon-”
“Well,” Doc tries.
Wynonna ignores him. “And we can go driving and hang out and get sodas and listen to music.”
Nicole scowls. “And I can’t do that if I don’t have a girlfriend?”
