Summary
God help them all if Stratt walks into the room, Grace thinks. Still, he’s too loyal to his friends to leave them unprotected.
“Please don’t call it that,” Annie wrinkles her nose and crosses her arms.
“What should I call it then?” Redell asks impudently.
“Perhaps by its scientific name?” She counters.
“Or maybe we don’t speak about it in public at all?” Dimitri shifts uncomfortably where he’s sitting on the armrest of the couch. Annie sits on the cushion below and next to him. They’re sharing a bag of Lays.
Yao rolls his eyes, catching on. “It is important to talk about such things in public so that the subject does not become even more taboo than it already is.”
Olesya stares at Yao with a look of wonder on her face. It’s like she’s truly seeing him for the first time in her life.___
Director Stratt is her usual violent and abrasive self during a meeting. She doesn't think that people will attribute this to her menstrual cycle, although, in an aircraft carrier filled with scientists, she really should know better.

Summary
She takes a breath and slowly brings her hand up to rest on his shoulder. Her hands are very cold but it feels so nice that he wants to happily lean into the comfort. No, no! Eva Stratt is a Caregiver and he cannot trust Caregivers. Ever. Even when they are being nice. Especially when they are being nice.
She’s just trying to butter him up and manipulate him into agreeing with her. He’s fallen for it before, but not this time. He can recognize the signs now.
“However it is that they coerced you into this contract, I can make it disappear,” she implores.
His eyes dart to hers and his heart starts beating faster and faster until he tells it to shut up for just a moment so he can think clearly. There’s no room for hope here. Don’t accept deals from Caregivers.___
Mr. Grace is alarmed to find Director Eva Stratt in his classroom one afternoon, demanding he dust off his lab coat and join her in the small task of saving the world. Unfortunately for the Director, Mr. Grace does not trust Caregivers very much, nor is he inclined to follow them blindly anymore.

Summary
“Stratt.” He goes to place her coffee on her desk like he always does when he notices that she’s already holding one. The man is holding an identical coffee cup.
“Oh, is that for me?” She’s smiling up at him. Grace nods dumbly.
“Seems like I beat you to it. Sorry, man.” The guy says genuinely. He’s standing way too close to her. And he looks way too smug about getting Stratt a coffee. Grace does it every day, multiple times.
“Oh, no, I’ll take it, Dr. Grace.” She puts her coffee down and reaches for his. He smiles down at her and doesn’t break eye contact as she takes the cup from his hand. It isn’t until she brings the coffee to her lips and takes a sip that he finally breaks eye contact and sits in his normal chair across from her.
“So, what’s up?”
“Dr. Grace, I’d like you to meet Dr. Jonas. He is going to be your replacement after the Hail Mary launches.”
If he were standing, his knees would’ve given out.

Dr. Ryland Grace thinks that his plans after the Hail Mary launches include applying for jobs back in the Bay Area and calling Director Eva Stratt every other week. Director Stratt knows him better than that.

Summary
Hot piece of ass? What is this, a 2000’s romcom movie? Who talks like that anymore? And that’s a very rude way of describing Stratt. He doesn’t even know what her…behind looks like! She’s always wearing those loose sweaters and pants—they’re his biggest enemies when he’s trying to gauge whether or not she’s eaten on the days that they've been apart.
Stratt is a lady. She carries around a taser that can flatten an elephant to the ground in a second and he’s not even sure where she keeps it under all those layers. That’s how you know you’re in the presence of a lady, the mystery is kept alive and running with very little effort on the lady’s part.
Stratt could probably be the female version of James Bond…which means Grace is definitely a Bond girl. That’s really unfortunate. He definitely doesn’t have the wardrobe for it but he can see Stratt in a suit, sipping a martini. All he can hope for is that he’s a useful Bond girl, at least.

Three times Dr. Ryland Grace could have lost his temper but didn't, and the one time he should not have lost his temper but, in defending Director Eva Stratt, did kinda lose it.

“We’re not a couple,” she reiterates for what feels like the hundredth time.
“Sure, Eva.”
Now that tone, she knows that tone well. He’s pretending to agree with her to placate her and fend off a fight. Well, she’s in a fighting mood, her mind is the clearest in the mornings nowadays and she has to take advantage.
“Ryland.”
“Eva Marie.”
She huffs in annoyance. “We’re not in a relationship.”
He sighs tiredly and puts his toast down gingerly. “Not yet, anyway.”
She sputters and slams her hands on the kitchen table. He has the gall to smirk at her and he’s even making eye contact!
“Not ever.”
“You want to tell me that I haven’t been yours for decades, Eva? Go right ahead and take that key back, then.” He settles back into his chair and crosses his arms with a smug smile on his dumb and handsome face. When she places her palm over the key, he smiles at her crookedly.

Captain Doctor Ryland Grace comes back from Erid with one goal in mind: to annoy Eva Stratt until she relents and enters into a relationship with him. Eva Stratt pretends to be less than enthused.

Summary
“Ah, I was just, err…” Yao stutters but nobody comes to his defense, not even Stratt. Grace has his hands on his hips, obviously expecting an answer. “You are speaking to us as if we’re children.”
Grace’s neck turns red in embarrassment and indignation. “No. Children know how to keep quiet and not interrupt a lecture. Especially a lesson as important and dangerous as this one, where I am showing you an alien microorganism that can bury us alive at the bottom of the ocean if proper safety procedures are not followed.”
The astronauts shift uncomfortably where they are standing. Yao is blinking rapidly.
“Now, if everyone can put their listening ears on, please.” Stratt nearly rolls her eyes but she does what he asks of them. She pretends to dig around in her pocket and then takes her imaginary listening ears and places them over her very real ears as if she’s putting headphones on.

Before Dr. Ryland Grace became the lead expert on astrophage, he was simply Mr. Grace, science teacher at Grover Cleveland Middle. Now that he is in charge of educating adults, it's hard to tell where Mr. Grace ends and where Dr. Grace begins. Director Eva Stratt has no problem with this.
