“My old line of work was…” he begins. “Dangerous. I tried to leave it behind, and for the most part I did, but apparently I still have some enemies out there.” He glances at Grace before putting his eyes firmly back on the road. He merges onto the highway and heads east, away from San Francisco.
“I’m taking you to somewhere safe. You two will stay put while I deal with this guy, and once I’m sure he’s no longer a threat, we’ll go back to town. It shouldn’t take more than a day or two, hopefully.”

“I’m sure if you put ‘looking for a date to a red carpet premier in LA’ in your tinder bio, you’d have a dozen matches by the end of the day,” Colt prods. Jody rolls her eyes at him, and he gives her a wink.
“You know for a fact I don’t do tinder,” Ryland says. “Not after that fiasco last summer, when you convinced me that it would be a good idea to suggest a tour of Alcatraz for a first date.” He’s starting to sound a little annoyed for real now, and Colt is a good brother, so he’s about to switch topics, ask about Ryland’s students, when he interrupts that train of thought.
“But actually,” Ryland starts, sounding thoughtful. Colt can picture him pacing, or maybe sticking the end of his pen in his mouth as he thinks. “There is someone I could invite. I mean, we haven’t known each other all that long. It might be weird.”
Set several months after cabin fever.
Colt invites Ryland to Jody's red carpet premier for Metalstorm II, and Ryland invites his new friend Court as his plus one. Colt and Jody get the wrong idea about the nature of Ryland and Court's relationship.
