Summary
Lucy Heartfilia has never been to a party that didn't make her skin crawl. Wayward glances and cutting words always found a way to embed themselves into her skin, and if given the opportunity she would rather be anywhere else. At the very least, Lucy was good at distractions. Her choice for the night was a pink-haired waiter who had clearly never attended an event like this before. His stumblings and missteps were a good distraction, an indication of freedom kept far from Lucy's reach. If only for a night, Lucy could escape vicariously through another's envious life.
Natsu Dragneel hated suits. He hated dressing up in stuffy outfits that restricted movement and the importance a suit demonstrated was of no significance to him. Yet there he was, bumbling around. He wanted out of this cold ballroom as fast as possible but in the meantime, he would look for some kind of fun in the meantime. Anything that could pique his interest and make this ridiculous job worthwhile.
--
A Lucy leaves home later AU where she meets Natsu at a Heartfilia-hosted ball, their journey beginning from there.

Summary
Fairy Tail was good to Lucy. She had never felt like just Lucy; appreciated for her qualities and strength, and maybe a little bit for her beauty. It was thrilling to be in an environment where cutting words weren’t hidden behind layers of falsities and half-truths. Everything was said, and never with any malice either.
Lucy got to be sloppy and dorky and snort when she laughed, all the things high society frowned upon. She was free to feel joy. Free to feel angry. And free to feel sad. The pink symbol emboldened on her hand invigorated her. Lucy felt like she could do anything and everything. She was surrounded by strong people. So, so strong, and Lucy wanted to be like them. Able to hold herself in a fight and defeat opponents without help. And Lucy was strong. She knew it logically. She knew that her friends would say the same. Fairy Tail made Lucy want more.
And more became unreachable so quickly. The doubts that existed in Lucy's mind manifested in injured friends and shattered dreams.
