As someone who really likes this series but absolutely loathed the toxic and abusive relationship between Hannibal and Will, I wanted to do a rewrite of the series to show that the story could have still worked without Hannibal being a disgusting POS towards Will when I could see their relationship had potential to actually be something in early moments in season 1 before it was revealed that the TV series version of Hannibal Lecter was a character I would NEVER be able to find a reason to like, which was very upsetting for me as someone who has always loved the original Hannibal Lecter from the movies.
I hated how Hannibal in this show seemed to be a 1-dimensional typical psychopath/abuser even though I feel like it’s pretty obvious in the original iteration of Hannibal Lecter that he wasn’t born a psychopath, and that the trauma he went through as a child was what made him what he is. So I reimagined a version that leans into that and created a more complex and nuanced version of Hannibal’s psychopathy with a twisted set of morals based on that belief that shows he does have the capability to form genuine connections with people, and that those connections can be healthy and non-toxic as psychopathy is a spectrum and doesn’t always have to be portrayed in the psychopath=pure evil type of way it often is in media.
So if you’re someone that likes toxic and abusive relationships for whatever reason, this rewrite is NOT for you. This is a dark romance that is actually ROMANCE, not abuse that is just disgustingly romanticized. This is how Hannibal and Will’s relationship could have developed to truly be something beautiful.
