"Then have a think about my question." Maedhros returns his hand to his shoulder. "Why am I the general of our forces? Why do I make sure we can fight?"
Ereinion stares at the floor for a few moments. "Because…because if something were to go wrong, we would be ready," he says eventually. "So we can defend ourselves." He looks up at Maedhros. "Right?"
Maedhros skims his knuckles over his cheeks. "Correct. I learned to fight so I could defend the people I love. Sometimes that meant taking the fight to the enemy before they brought it to us, but it was always for Atto, and your uncles, and all these people around us." He tweaks Ereinion's nose again, delighting in his son's affronted squawk. "And now you. This is your first lesson."
Ereinion looks at him from between hands sheltering his nose from further harm. "What is?"
Maedhros holds out the small, blunted blade, balanced across one palm and one wrist. "Always, always, know why you're picking up a weapon to fight. If you don't know, then don't do it."

Summary
I look forward to hearing from you. Let me know how Dior is getting on; he does write to Lómion and Tyelpë, but I would like to hear your thoughts as well, as someone who understands what it is to rule. And Tyelpë gets annoyed if I ask to read his letters.
Maedhros
Also, whilst I am writing this and have your attention, please remind Túrin to write home to his parents and sister. They are trying to plan Nienor’s wedding, and he has not yet given them an answer as to when he and Beleg will return to Dór-Lomin. I normally would not be reduced to messenger like this, but even I fear the wrath of an irate mother trying to make plans, as any sensible person would.
