Summary
When she gets restless she knows Mia tries to get her out of the apartment. Letty is letting herself be walked like a dog down the sidewalk, and the back pocket of Mia’s jeans is too tight to fit her hand, but she has three fingers there and her thumb curled into Mia’s waistband. And Mia is letting this happen in front of God and Jesus and the kid from the family four doors down mowing the lawn. Mia belongs to her.

Summary
The bodeguita looks all different at night, like it’s sleeping; Letty can almost see the walls shifting and settling as it breathes. It’s just shadows moving. It’s one in the morning and she’s watching it from across the street, sitting on the curb. She’s been drinking for a couple of hours now.

Summary
The scrapyard is the closest Letty gets to the end of the world, or a graveyard, wandering through rows of rusted hot rods with the grass growing up over them. Every car in here had somebody to drive it a while ago. In Letty’s head, an engine is kind of a soul; most of these hoods are hollowed out now and the chassis are sleeping here, and their spirits are lined up on the big dragstrip in the sky. Amen hallelujah.
