Summary
The door read ‘CW Detective Agency’ in small and modest letters, which you could be forgiven for overlooking, given the state of the rest of the door. Bullet holes riddled it; knife - and possibly claw? - marks scarred it, in decorative patterns; it was scorched and battered and warped to the point where it shouldn’t truly be able to function as a door at all, and can only have been managing the job purely out of habit.

Summary
As soon as Basira had called, Jon had Known everything about the case: his patron casually dropping the information that her missing partner, Daisy, was trapped in the Buried, with a sort of ‘What can you do?’ shrug, clearly expecting him to let her know and move on.
The Ceaseless Watcher couldn’t watch Jon in there and therefore he obviously wouldn’t go. Simple as that. And the additional fact - this one dropped on him more like an anvil and clanged against his skull a few times, for emphasis - that no one had ever come out again, pretty much sealed the deal.
It wasn’t as if there hadn’t been other cases where Jon could do nothing.

It wasn’t that Jon was unaware of such wild and abstruse concepts as ‘days off’ and ‘weekends’. It was just that he seemed perfectly convinced that they only applied to other people.

Summary
Before meeting Martin - and experiencing the sort of dramatic domino effect which that had had on his relationships - Jon had sometimes gone for weeks without anyone calling him by name. He was simply ‘The Detective’, to his Ceaseless patron, his eldritch clients and enemies alike; and, sometimes - too often - even in his own head, when ‘Jonathan Sims’ as a concept, seemed something long ago and far away; a sweet, simplistic dream.

“He just … ate the whole thing?”
Martin glanced, involuntarily, at his own computer, which sat there, stoic and distinctly unappetising, with a light dusting of crumbs which he kept meaning to clean out of the keyboard before they festered. In this environment, that probably meant turning into something very alive, very horrible and very dangerous.
Jon would probably adopt it.

Summary
It was restful, watching Hogules eat; to bask in the reflected light of such pure, uncomplicated bliss.
Too restful, apparently; because, half a second later, a cheery voice rang out from nowhere - “Ah, Detective, I wonder if I might borrow you for a moment?” - and whisked him away before he’d finished formulating a very emphatic ‘No.’
