When disaster strikes, Jaskier doesn't think about it, just throws his lute at Geralt and dives off the unsteady planks after the falling figures, ignoring the witcher's shocked shout of his name. While all his instincts scream at Jaskier that Borch is something that could fly, he reacts before rational thoughts kicked in, and anyway its better to be safe than sorry.

It could be worse, Jaskier muses, looking up at the small circle of sky visible at the top of the dried up well. At least the bandits had taken his lute so he didn't land on it when they threw him in. He can always recover it later. They didn't even injure him, the group of them just grabbing him before he'd recovered from the truly vicious hangover he'd been sporting. Bloody witchers and their alchemy.

The gulls take off with sudden squawks and the water around them ripples, the boat listing sideways as something yanks on the nets. He and Ciri instinctively move to the opposite side to try counterbalance it as Lambert starts hauling them in, Ciri scooping up his swords and holding them within easy reach. There shouldn't be anything in this lake even close to matching his strength but this is definitely larger than is natural.
