Poor Thomas will keep being an idiot for a while longer :,) Thank you! I'm so pleased that the choice to tell it from a guard's POV is landing. And I didn't realize that 'trapped in an elevator' was a trope, haha! Believe it or not, I was writing another scene for this story which required some pretty intense research on Swiss Guards, and came upon a Reddit thread of someone that had trained alongside one, and they described a secondhand anecdote of a couple of Swiss Guards accidentally getting stuck in the private papal elevators. And I thought "Oh....OH. Maybe I can put a certain Pope and his beloved Dean in this situation. >;)". Completely changed the trajectory and underpinnings of this story.
Hm, come to think of it, I haven't come upon the elevator trope yet in Conclave fandom -- this may be the first! But in some fandoms, every other fic is the pairing of your choice stuck in an elevator or some other small confined space, where they either give in to their desires, are forced to have a heart-to-heart chat, or both. ;)
And isn't it just so much fun when research leads to some unexpected direction to your story, and it ends up working great? I'm sure looking forward to where this goes!
Eeee yeah! Ugh I totally do want to write what went down in that elevator from a Vincent/Thomas POV- I'm fairly certain that will be my next fic after this one is wrapped up. There are just some really fun metaphors I want to play with, given that they're in a liminal space and all. So many ideas, not enough time!
