I loved how well this AU meshed with the canon universe. Just the one small tweak of the engagement, or rather, what it represented, which was to make them real friends (and something more), and we get a much happier, better end to canon events. I think if they'd ever had a real friendship, instead of the stupid rivalry, things would have turned out much better. Naruto would have actually understood Sasuke, and Sasuke would have been more willing to listen to Naruto.
The last line of the story was especially powerful because Naruto's going to change the world out of love. That's the person I always hoped Naruto would become. In canon, he got Sasuke to agree to come home, and then acted like he had no more responsibility to him. It was like checking off a box: Sasuke's home, now on to becoming Hokage. But Naruto did have a responsibility to Sasuke. He promised Sasuke (and Neji, and Jiraiya, and Pain...) he'd make the world a better place. Why else did he demand they put their faith in him?
By the way, please ignore the troll comment above. That person is a canon shipper and writes the exact same suicide-baiting, homophobic insults to all the Naruto fic writers, not just the yaoi ones. It's nothing personal to you or your story. KakaSaku and SasuTen aren't doing anyone any harm, but the troll can't stand the idea that anyone would ship anything but SS. Sadly, the troll writes these gross "reviews" on multiple archives, not just AO3, and has been doing so for years now, so most authors just moderate their comments to avoid this nutjob. He seems to visit the archive once a day and spam posts every new fic he can't find with the same comments over and over, copy and pasted from one fic to another. I doubt he's ever read a word of any of the fics he tolls, just hates them on principle for not shipping what he ships.
