Work Text:
This past week has strung you out. Sam was under house arrest in the bunker after being in near-death shape. You worried about him, but you were the one person he didn't completely downplay his pain to. The two of you had spent the weekend doing so much research it made your heads spin while Dean was out hunting the current case.
"Hello, anybody home?"
Your attention was snatched back from your overcrowded thoughts.
"You okay? You've been reading the same page for, like, five minutes." Sam had been trying to get your attention.
You blinked at the page and straightened your posture. "Yes, just..."
"Overwhelmed?" He asked with a chuckle before taking a breath and rubbing his face.
You sigh and nod, "Yes. I did not realize how intense research can be. I commend you and Dean for doing so much of this."
Sam let out a soft laugh and stood up. "Well, I don't think my head can hold any more obscure monster lore right now." He said while stretching. You've known the brothers for a while now but you still often find yourself in awe of Sam's large stature, especially since your vessel isn't very tall in comparison.
"Off to bed?" You ask.
"That's the plan." Sam started to walk away but turned around, "Oh, don't forget to plug in my laptop this time, if you use it tonight." He told you with slight smile. You nodded and watched him walk away after saying your goodnights. It was now just you and your bothersome thoughts, again. Lately, the only peace you've had came from being around Sam. You didn't even have to talk to each other, just being in his presence was enough to soothe your mind. When you were working cases with the boys, there were a few times during combat where Sam grabbed you out of harm's way. You liked being held by him, you even hug him with every greeting. The room felt cold in comparison to the warmth in your chest the thought of Sam brings you. You sat there, feeling small and isolated, looking toward the hallway that led to his room.
⠀
Sam was just starting to drift off when there was a knock at his door. He rolled over to turn on his light, "Yeah? Come in," and sat up. You opened the door to see him rubbing his eyes.
"Oh, dear, I'm sorry. Did I wake you?"
"Nah, not really. What's up? You okay?" Even when he was in the worst shape, he was always attentive to your wellbeing.
"No. Well... I..." You didn't know how to comprehend what you were feeling, let alone explain it to someone else. Sam shifted to sit on the edge of his bed, his brows furrowed with concern. He waited patiently as you took a minute to think of what you wanted to say. "Would it be okay if I, um... slept with you tonight?" Sam's eyebrows lifted in surprise and he straightened his back. You still had a lot to learn about humans and their social customs so you were unsure if this was an inappropriate request, but you figured the two of you could work it out regardless.
"Uh, well— I mean, you don't sleep, right? Wouldn't you, I dunno, get bored?" Sam replied with a light chuckle.
You noted that he seemed confused rather than uncomfortable and eased out some tension from your shoulders. "No." You answered plainly. Sam was silent for a moment, as if he were expecting more of an explanation. He blinked then nodded. "Alright, yeah." He waved you over and moved back under the covers. Sam knew that sometimes you didn't want or know how to talk about what was bothering you. But whenever you did, he was always there. Always. And you knew that.
You gingerly sat on the bed, hesitant to take up space, even though it was your idea. It felt different now, being this close to him. The other times were moments that just suddenly happened with no prior discussion. But this time, attention was called. Sam was looking at you, watching your movements, your nervousness. And you could swear you saw a faint smirk on his face before he turned to switch off his lamp. He laid on his side, facing you, while you laid on your back and stared at the dark ceiling. Awkwardness.
⠀
After a few, but long, minutes, you glanced at him. His eyes were closed. You took a moment before very carefully turning on your side to face him.
"Sam?" You whispered as quietly as you could while still being audible.
"Mhm?" He hummed, eyes still closed.
You felt the vibrations of his voice resonate through the mattress. "Would it be okay if..." A pause. "You know that if you're ever uncomfortable with anything I—"
"I know. C'mere." Sam wrapped his arm around you and pulled you in. You relaxed a little, but still... So, he began tracing his fingers along your back. And that was it. You relaxed even more before adjusting your position. It took some shifting around until you were content, but that wasn't any bother to Sammy. All the tension and stress finally melted away as you found yourself nuzzled under his chin, hands almost squished against his chest, and your outer leg in between his. You listened to his breath and heartbeat change as he eventually fell asleep. The world was drowned out in his arms. You felt secure. You felt safe. You felt small.
