"Cait, we have a serious problem!" Vi's whisper-yell over the phone made Caitlyn lock in, already grabbing her keys to go home.
"What's wrong? Do I need my rifle?" She went to pick it up but was stopped by a voice in the background.
"Vi? Where are your teacups?" Caitlyn started laughing, setting her keys back down and returning to her desk.
"You forgot that my mother was supposed to be visiting us today?" There was silence on the other line before she heard her wife sigh.
"They're in the cabinet next to the microwave, Mrs. Kiramman." That set off another laughing fit. "Shut up!" She whisper-yelled over the phone again. "Why didn't you remind me? And why are you working and not coming to save me?"
"I told you yesterday. Thats the whole reason why I made you clean up the living room." More silence on the other side of the line. "You'll survive for the next…" Caitlyn looked at the clock with a smile. "Two ish hours."
"Two- Two hours?!" Ever the dramatic one, Vi sounded like she had betrayed her. "On my day off too?! I was supposed to be wrapped in a blanket, in my hoodie and sweatpants, on the couch, watching WWE!"
"You'll be fine, I have faith in your ability to survive being in the same house as your mother-in-law for two hours. If you can be thrown through a wall and get up to go back to beating someone up, you can handle my mother." A knock on her door made her straighten up, ready to be the Sheriff again. "I have to go. I love you."
"Wait-" She hung up on the panicked voice, hiding a smile as she called out for the person to enter. Being the gracious wife that she was, Caitlyn left the precinct an hour early to go save her. When she got home and walked in, Vi was sitting at their dining room table with her mother looking like she wanted to throw herself off a bridge.
"Am I interrupting something?" Just her voice made Vi light up, forgetting about her woes and happy to see her savior.
"We were just talking about different teas and how they are supposed to be prepared." Her mother turned around allowing Vi to mouth 'Save me'. The amount of control it took to not start laughing was immeasurable, but it was certainly a lot.
"Very educational." Caitlyn smiled and approached her wife that was giving her puppy eyes as a cry for help. "Maybe you'll become a tea prodigy."
"Oh goodness no." Cassandra laughed at the statement. "Vi can't even hold a tea cup correctly."
"Because I don't let her use them." She scruffed up Vi's hair, loving the scowl it caused. "She's broken three of my nice teacups which means her teacup privilege is revoked." Each time Caitlyn found Vi trying to quietly clean it up in an effort to hide her crime as if it hadn't made a loud noise as it broke.
"Don't make fun of me." Vi grumbled and crossed her arms.
"How about you go make something for dinner?" An excellent excuse for her to leave the area. It was almost always Vi's duty to be the chef since everything Caitlyn tried to make ended up getting burned or tasting like she should be arrested for even attempting to create such a monstrosity. Vi actually tried to arrest her once but was defeated by a couple kisses and promises of take out instead.
"Sounds great!" She excitedly got up and kissed Caitlyn on the cheek before disappearing.
"You're going to kill her one day." Caitlyn rolled her eyes and sat down where Vi had so eagerly vacated. "Would it hurt for you to not make her so miserable?"
"I have no idea what you are talking about." The mischievous glint in her eyes said otherwise as she took a sip of her tea that she had been using as a prop in her lecture. "I'm only making sure she knows about your favorite beverage."
"No, you're testing her patience." She gave her mother a flat look. "Is this still about the vase?"
"It was your great grandmother's, one of a kind and irreplaceable." One day when they were visiting her parents Vi tripped over the air and crash landed into a pillar that held an elegant vase. It stood no chance and shattered on impact. Vi was convinced that her mother was going to execute her in front of the whole council for such a crime, hiding behind Caitlyn as she broke the news about the broken vase. Her mother had taken it in stride but ever since then, it seemed like she made it her mission to make Vi as miserable as possible when it was just the two of them as payback. "Now I have to hide all the breakable objects whenever you two come around out of fear she takes another victim."
"I was wondering where all of your decor went." She laughed and shook her head, not surprised at all. "Will you be staying for dinner?"
"No, I have plans with an old friend. I'll see myself out so you can go help Vi." Cassandra got up with a smile, ignoring her daughters shocked expression.
"You came here just to torture my wife!" The audacity was astounding, yet very on brand for the type of woman her mother was.
"I would never do such a thing." She put her coat on with a smirk, opening the door before talking. "I simply ran out of time while having a wonderful conversation with my daughter-in-law. Goodbye, Dear." Cassandra closed the door before she could even wish her a goodbye, leaving her standing there appalled.
"Is she gone?" Vi came around the corner wearing her little apron with a smudge of flour on her cheek.
"Yes, apparently she has somewhere to be instead of talking to her daughter that she sees only once or twice a month." Caitlyn crossed her arms and scoffed before turning to Vi to wipe the flour off her cheek. "I think she's still upset about that damn vase." Vi groaned dramatically and covered her face with her hands.
"Its been almost two years! We've gotten married in that time span and I haven't broken anything else!" She stayed close to Caitlyn's side whenever at her parent's house, only ever allowing distance between them if she needed to go to the bathroom or was sitting down in a safe location with no breakable objects within a six foot radius. "You Kirammans are stubborn and petty."
"Try that again." Caitlyn slapped her on the shoulder with a glare.
"Fine, your mother is stubborn and petty." Vi rolled her eyes and returned to the kitchen, knowing she was toeing the line yet committing to the bit anyway.
"I'll show you what petty really means if you don't get back over here and give me a kiss for saving your ass!" She waited for Vi to return and wrapped her arms around her shoulders as arms wrapped around her waist to enjoy the feeling of kissing her wife even more.
"Am I forgiven for my sins?" They pressed their foreheads together and swayed slightly.
"That depends on what else you're willing to do." Caitlyn raised an eyebrow and pulled back so she could properly see Vi's face.
"I can't have dessert before dinner, so you'll have to wait until I'm done cooking." A blush rose to her cheeks while Vi smiled devilishly. "Want to come help?"
"I'd love to."
