Work Text:

The salt air hangs thick and heavy inside the small dome tent, smelling of dried sea kelp, damp canvas, and the sharp, metallic tang of sunbaked skin. Outside, the tide laps rhythmically against the rocky shores of the deserted island, a low, pulsing hush that swallows the distant crackle of the dying campfire.

Nagisa sits cross-legged on his unrolled sleeping bag, the lantern casting long, amber shadows against the nylon walls. His shoulders ache from the brutal laps, the relentless regimen Gou unearthed from some ancient club archive. He pulls off his damp shirt, letting the cool evening draft hit his chest, then reaches down to peel off his socks. His fingertips trace downward, skimming the curve of his calf until they rest on his soleus muscle. Beneath his skin lies a pale, silver trace—a faded scar, barely visible under the warm glow, but sharp in his memory. It isn't a mark left by the pool deck or an overzealous flip-turn. It's a souvenir from a past relationship that ended in silence and sharp words, a moment where he had held a blade against an unforgiving foe he had once loved, only to cut himself in the process.

He rubs the thin line of tissue, feeling the familiar, faint dullness in the muscle. The tent zipper buzzes open, breaking the silence. Haruka steps in, ducking his head to clear the low ceiling. He brings the scent of the evening ocean with him, cool and quiet.

Without a word, Haru sheds his jacket and outer shorts, unbuttoning his shirt with slow, methodical movements until he is dressed only in his comfortable swim briefs and a thin undershirt. Haru glides onto his side, propping his head up with one hand, facing Nagisa directly. His dark blue eyes reflect the lantern's flame, soft and unusually clear, lacking his usual distant, water-bound glaze.

"Nagi," Haru says softly. His voice is a low murmur, barely carrying over the sound of the ocean outside.

Nagisa looks up, letting his hand drop from his leg. "Yeah, Haru-chan?"

Haru shifts slightly, his gaze dropping to the space between them before meeting Nagisa’s eyes again. "Were you serious earlier?"

Nagisa blinks, tilting his head. "About what?"

"About the mackerel," Haru says, completely earnest, without a trace of ironical humor. "If we were dating... would you really cook it for me?"

A tiny laugh escapes Nagisa’s lips, though it carries a thread of nervous energy. "Well... yeah. If you supply it, I’ll cook it. I'm pretty good at it, you know."

Haru stares at him for a long moment, the quiet stretching out until it feels fragile, ready to snap.

"Can I kiss you?" Haru asks.

Nagisa freezes. His heart gives a sudden, violent thud against his ribs. He searches Haru’s face, half-expecting the blank setup for a dry joke or a continuation of the silly campfire banter that had seen Haru dramatically "break up" with Makoto just an hour prior.

"Why?" Nagisa asks, his tone dropping its usual bubbly pitch, replaced by a defensive edge. "Are you just playing around because of what happened outside?"

"I don't play around about stuff like that," Haru says quietly. He doesn't pull away. He stays right there, grounded and completely present. "I've never had a boyfriend before."

The simplicity of the confession lands heavily in the small space. Nagisa feels the knot of old tension in his chest begin to give way. The shadow of past betrayals, of sharp edges and cold endings, melts under the steady, warm weight of Haru’s gaze. Haru doesn't make promises he doesn't mean; he doesn't waste words.

"Okay," Nagisa whispers, his defense lowering completely.

Haru leans in. The first kiss is eager, slightly awkward—a bump of noses and an unsteady angle of lips as they figure out the space between them. It’s raw and unpracticed, but intensely real. Haru pauses, breathing in soft against Nagisa's cheek, before leaning back in for a second kiss. This one is slower, deeper, a gentle press of warmth that settles deep in Nagisa's chest. Haru shifts his weight, moving down. Nagisa catches his breath as Haru’s lips leave his mouth, trailing a line of quiet, reverent kisses down the column of his neck.

He presses a soft kiss to Nagisa's collarbone, then moves lower, brushing his lips across the warm skin of his pectorals. Nagisa’s hands hover nervously in the air before slowly coming down to rest near Haru’s shoulders. Haru continues his descent, his mouth lingering over the curve of Nagisa’s ribs, finally settling against his upper abdomen.

Throughout it all, Haru occasionally pauses to look up, keeping steady, reassuring eye contact, ensuring Nagisa is with him every step of the way.

Haru stops there, resting his cheek directly over Nagisa's stomach. He breathes out a long, contented sigh, wrapping his arms securely around Nagisa’s waist and pulling himself close. Nagisa looks down at the dark crown of hair resting against his torso, feeling the steady rise and fall of Haru’s breathing against his skin. The tense ache in his muscles, the lingering sting of old memory—it all fades into the rhythmic murmur of the island night.

"You're going to sleep there, then?" Nagisa asks, a soft, fond smile breaking across his face.

Haru doesn't lift his head, but his arms tighten slightly around Nagisa's waist. "You have nice abs," Haru mutters, his voice muffled against Nagisa's skin. "It's comfortable."

Nagisa lets out a soft, genuine laugh that ripples through his chest. He reaches out, threading his fingers through Haru's soft, dark hair, gently massaging his scalp as the lantern light flickers low.

The harsh amber glow of the lantern from the night before has faded, replaced by the cool, pale blue of dawn filtering through the nylon canvas. The island is quiet except for the continuous, rhythmic thrum of the tide outside and the early morning call of gulls circling the rocky cliffs. Inside the tent, the air is cold and damp with sea mist, but beneath the heavy sleeping bag, the warmth is dense and lingering.

Nagisa wakes up first, his eyelids heavy as he blinks against the pale light. The dull ache in his calves from yesterday’s grueling drills is still there, but it feels distant, softened by the heavy weight pressed against his side.

Haruka hasn't moved. He is still curled tightly against Nagisa, one arm hooked over Nagisa’s waist and his head resting just below Nagisa's chest. His breathing is deep, slow, and completely even—a rare sight for someone who usually sleeps with a vigilant, quiet tension. Haru’s dark hair is a tangled mess against Nagisa’s undershirt, soft strands rising and falling with every exhale. Nagisa stays perfectly still for a long moment, afraid that the slightest shift will break the fragile peace inside the small dome. He slowly lifts his hand, his fingers tracing small, lazy patterns on Haru’s shoulder blade. The skin there is smooth, warm, and familiar, marked only by the strong contours of a swimmer's back.

A quiet rustle outside—likely Makoto or Rei stirring in the neighboring tent—causes Haru to stir. He lets out a low, sleepy hum, his face burying deeper into Nagisa’s side before his eyes blink open. For a second, Haru’s dark blue eyes look glazed with sleep, unfocused and disoriented, until they shift upward to meet Nagisa’s gaze.

"Morning, Haru-chan," Nagisa whispers, his voice thick with sleep.

Haru doesn't pull away. Instead, he slowly slides upward, dragging his chin along Nagisa’s chest until they are nose-to-nose on the unrolled sleeping bag. His eyes search Nagisa's face with that same quiet, steady earnestness from the night before, checking for any lingering hesitation or regret. Finding none, the subtle tension in Haru's shoulders melts entirely.

"Morning," Haru murmurs, his voice a quiet rasp.

He reaches out, his calloused thumb brushing gently along Nagisa’s jawline, resting just beneath his ear. It’s an uncharacteristically tender gesture for Haru—unhurried and deliberate. He leans in and presses a soft, lingering kiss to the corner of Nagisa’s mouth, warm and tasting of sleep. Nagisa smiles into the kiss, reaching up to tangle his fingers in the back of Haru’s messy hair, pulling him just a fraction closer. The old scars on his leg, the ghosts of past harsh words, feel completely powerless in the cramped, canvas-bound warmth of the morning.

Outside, the zipper of a nearby tent screeches open, followed by Makoto’s quiet, yawning voice calling out to Rei about lighting the stove for breakfast. Haru sighs softly against Nagisa's cheek, his forehead coming to rest against Nagisa's.

"We have to get up soon," Haru mutters, though he makes zero effort to move.

"Five more minutes," Nagisa whispers back, wrapping both arms around Haru’s neck and closing his eyes. "You still owe me that mackerel anyway."

Haru lets out a faint, barely audible huff of amusement against Nagisa's skin, tightening his grip around Nagisa's waist as the morning sun slowly turns the blue canvas into gold.
