Chapter Text
“I bought flowers for you today.” Katai said as Kunikida entered his home. Katai was lazily sitting on the ground, curled up in his futon. Kunikida shed his coat and took in what Katai had just told him.
“Flowers?” He asks, quizzically. The smile on his face is a mix of disbelief and embarrassment, for whatever reason. Receiving flowers should never be embarrassing, but for some reason it was to Kunikida. Maybe it was the implications that Yosano had told him about when someone gives you flowers, or maybe it was because Katai was the one who bought them. “I know you didn’t go out and buy flowers just for me—”
“They’re for Rokuzo and Sasaki,” Katai clarifies, not looking up. He doesn’t see Kunikida’s smile drop. The house is silent save for Katai’s deft fingers moving on the keyboard he was typing nonsense on. The air conditioning whirs and it’s suddenly so loud. “And, I had them delivered. I don’t know where the florist is anyway.”
“Oh.” Kunikida settles on saying, and maybe it's because it's the only thing he can say. Now the look of disbelief is for a different reason, because he’s shocked on how casually Katai can say their names.
Katai feels like he did something wrong. The silence wasn’t comfortable by any means, not like how it’s usually silent when he's with Kunikida. “...Do you not like them?” He looks up and studies Kunikida’s face.
“No, it’s not…” Kunikida stares at the heap of colors lying on the floor next to Katai. “It’s not that, Katai. They’re… beautiful.”
“I can go with you,” Katai says, suddenly, “to the, um, the cemetery. If it would make you feel better…”
“I couldn’t ask you to do that,” Kunikida responds and it's a firm no, or it was supposed to be, but his voice was small and not full of its usual sternness. “I know you don’t like going outside.”
