Chapter Text
The children were playing around the Lee mansion. Eight-year-old Lee Min-ho chuckled as he held his three-year-old brother's hand.
"Appa, he's trying to run away," Min-ho complained to his father, who only laughed softly in response.
"Let him run," his father replied. Min-ho pouted and let go of his brother's hand.
Free to move, three-year-old Lee Heeseung rushed over to two-year-old Jaeyun and wrapped him in a big hug.
"Ikeu!" Jaeyun giggled, hugging him back tightly. The two began playing together, filled with bright smiles and laughter, while their parents watched them affectionately from a short distance away.
"I'm so glad the Moon Goddess made them soulmates," Mark Lee, Heeseung's father, said softly. Bang-chan smiled and agreed, watching his own son play happily with Heeseung.
The family gathering was going peacefully until a loud gunshot echoed from downstairs, making everyone freeze in shock.
Bang-chan immediately rushed forward and pulled Jaeyun into his arms, while Mark quickly lifted Heeseung into his.
"Min-ho!" Mark called out, his voice laced with sudden panic as he looked around for his eldest son, who was nowhere nearby. Tears filled Jaeyun's eyes, and Heeseung began to cry softly as well, calling out, "Hyung..."
As more gunshots echoed through the house, the fathers quickly reunited with their Partners. Bang-chan handed Jaeyun over to his partner, Seung-min.
"Seung-min, go straight and don't look back," Bang-chan urged, shielding them as he pushed him forward.
Seung-min held Jaeyun tightly against his chest, tears streaming down his face as he ran. Spotting Min-ho nearby, he reached out and grabbed the boy's hand. "Min-ho, come with me!"
He hurried them out through the back exit of the mansion, heading straight toward the open fields. He could hear footsteps pursuing them, but he refused to look back, keeping both boys close as he ran through the dark.
Suddenly, an attacker grabbed Seung-min from behind, causing him to stumble. Knowing he couldn't keep running, he used all his strength to pull away. "Min-ho, run! Take Jaeyun and run!" he cried out as he stayed behind to fight off the pursuer.
Min-ho pulled Jaeyun into his arms and ran as fast as his small legs could carry him. He finally reached the main road, where he spotted a familiar car.
"Is that Aunt Jihyo?" Min-ho whispered through his tears. He rushed toward her just as Jihyo stepped out, holding two-year-olds Jungwon and Sunoo in her lap.
Jihyo's eyes widened in shock as she saw them. "Min-ho? Jaeyun? Where are your parents?"
"We don't know..." Min-ho sobbed.
Jeongyeon, sitting in the front, heard the distant gunfire coming from the fields. "We need to leave right now—it's the Chois," she said urgently.
Jihyo quickly placed the frightened children into the back seat as the engine roared to life. Min-ho looked out the window toward the dark fields as the car sped away into the night. He wrapped his arms tightly around Jaeyun to comfort him, while two-year-old Jungwon and Sunoo sat beside them, trembling in fear.
"Aunt Jihyo, what's happening?" Min-ho asked through quiet hiccups, holding back his tears as he thought of his parents and his little brother left behind.
"It's nothing, dear. Just try to sleep, okay?" Jihyo said softly.
Even though Min-ho had a hundred questions racing through his mind, he nodded. Exhaustion finally took over, and he closed his eyes.
Jeongyeon, who had been focusing on the dark road ahead, let out a heavy sigh. "The Chois are dangerous. Didn't I warn all of you?" she said, glancing back through the rearview mirror.
Suddenly, Jihyo's phone rang. She looked down at the screen and saw the caller ID. "Jimin-ssi?"
She glanced nervously at Jeongyeon, who made no secret of her dislike for her brother. Another heavy sigh filled the car.
"The Chois burned the mansion to the ground," Jimin said urgently over the line. "Everything is gone. Are the kids safe?"
"Yes, they're with us, don't worry," Jihyo replied, keeping her voice low. "Min-ho and Jaeyun are here too, but I don't know where the rest of the Lees and Sims are."
She heard a long, stressed breath from the other end of the line. "I've arranged a private plane," Jimin told her. "Go straight to the airport and get them out of here. The Chois are destroying everything. I'll search for the others."
Before Jihyo could reply, the line went dead.
"We need to get to the airport right away," Jihyo said, looking straight ahead. "The plane is already waiting."
Jeongyeon frowned, her eyes filled with worry. "What about Jaeyun and Min-ho? We can't just take them away, can we?"
"If the Lees and Sims survived, they'll contact us soon," Jihyo answered softly. Deep down, she prayed their parents were alive. Looking back at her own children, Sunoo and Jungwon, she silently asked God to keep everyone safe. A hand gently squeezed her arm in reassurance—it was Jeongyeon, her partner and strength.
When they finally arrived at the airport, Jeongyeon parked the car in a quiet, secluded corner. But before they could even open the doors to get the children out, a group of armed men suddenly surrounded the vehicle.
Min-ho woke up, confused. He lazily peeked out the window and froze. Jihyo and Jeongyeon were already standing outside with their hands held high in the air. He blinked, trying to clear his vision, but his heart dropped when he saw the weapons in the men's hands.
Instinct immediately took over. Sensing the immediate danger, Min-ho looked at the younger children sleeping beside him. Spying a thick black blanket on the seat, he carefully pulled it over the three of them, making sure they were completely hidden from view.
Peeking over the edge of the window once more, he saw Jihyo and Jeongyeon forced onto their knees. A tall man with broad shoulders walked up to them, clearly the leader of the group. Without a word, he raised his gun and fired.
Terrified and choking back a sob, Min-ho dropped to the floorboard, curling himself into a tight ball.
A few agonizing minutes passed in total silence. Realizing the noise had stopped, Min-ho carefully peeked outside again. The men were gone.
Trembling, he climbed out of the car, pulled the blanket off the three little ones, and looked around the empty parking area. He had no idea what to do. Alone in the dark, he broke down into quiet, helpless tears.
"Hey... what happened, kid?" a soft voice asked.
Min-ho looked up to see a young man standing nearby, looking at him with genuine concern. Hiccuping through his tears, Min-ho pointed to the sleeping toddlers in the back seat, and then toward the quiet figures lying on the pavement just out of direct sight.
The man followed his gesture, and his eyes widened in shock. He took a deep breath, turning to look at his partner standing beside him. "We can't just leave them here, Hoshi-yah."
Hoshi let out a long breath, staring at the frightened children, and nodded slowly. "Let's take them with us."
