"Hello beautiful, you really ought to call those pastors out here right now."
The voice dripped with sarcasm, and it belonged to a girl perched on the rooftop with her legs swinging back and forth. Her dark brown hair whipped around wildly in the wind, which made it next to impossible for Haewon to get a proper look at her face. The bulky black coat draped over her shoulders probably couldn't conceal the raw danger pouring off her anyway.
While that brunette seemed to be having the time of her life up there, Haewon was a nun sinking fast into full-blown panic. This had to be the first time she'd ever come face to face with anything this terrifying.
"W-Who are you?" She gripped her crucifix like it was her only lifeline.
"God, you humans are so damn boring." The girl let out this nasty cackle, and her eyes felt like they were drilling straight through Haewon's chest.
Haewon couldn't force a single word past her lips. Sweat was just streaming down her face in rivers she couldn't stop.
"...Jinsol. You can call me Jinsol." Her voice came out all husky and rough, blending with the wind howling around them, and it sent this nasty chill racing down Haewon's spine.
"What do you want from me?" But Haewon's eyes had grown steadier now, and that only seemed to make Jinsol even more curious.
"Just trying to figure out you humans a little. What, did you think I was here to rip out your soul and drag it down to that shithole for Lucifer?" She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, casually shooting back at Haewon.
Haewon's whole body shuddered once she finally got a clear view of that face. The girl was stunning, no question about it, and there was something weirdly familiar about her too. But some instinct buried deep in Haewon's gut kept screaming at her to stay the hell away.
"What are you?" That question had been eating at her since the moment she laid eyes on this woman. She definitely wasn't human. What ordinary person sits on a rooftop in the middle of the night looking like that?
"How do I even explain this." Jinsol propped her chin up and pretended to mull it over. "I'm not exactly a demon like those creeps down below but I sure as hell ain't an angel either."
"When the war kicked off and Lucifer led half the angels in their little rebellion, I happened to be one of the few who sat that whole mess out..." She trailed off for a second, like she was reminiscing about her so-called glory days. "But that bastard Michael decided anyone who didn't fight was nothing but a weak coward who deserved to be thrown out on their ass."
Haewon could actually hear Jinsol's teeth grinding together whenever she mentioned Michael.
Jinsol pushed herself to her feet, and the coat that had been resting on her shoulders slid right off. That was when the proof of her special identity finally came into view.
Behind Jinsol's back sat a pair of wings, nothing too shocking there, until Haewon realized that the left one looked exactly like an angel's, while the right one was unmistakably demonic.
Jinsol let out this little giggle when she caught Haewon staring so intensely at her wings.
"How...how is that even possible?"
"They were about to strip both of them off me, but I managed to slip away. Only lost the one side." Jinsol pointed at the pure white angel wing on her left.
"And this one was a gift from that old bastard." When Haewon's eyes landed on the other wing, she could see the disgust written plain as day on Jinsol's face.
"So then..."
"Relax, alright? I don't get off on tempting humans. You people do a fine job tearing each other apart all on your own. Why would I need to get my hands dirty?" The contempt in Jinsol's voice was impossible to miss.
"I'm Haewon."
"I know."
That answer hit Haewon like a punch to the gut. This was their first meeting. She'd never laid eyes on this girl before, so how the hell did she know her name?
"You really don't recognize me?" Jinsol's face fell as she asked, all casual about it.
"..."
"Just last week you were calling me Sapphire all sweet and warm." Jinsol lifted her gaze and locked eyes with her.
So the demon standing right there was actually that adorable puppy she'd taken in seven days ago. Anger and fear started wrestling for control inside her head.
"You're way too trusting for your own good. Last year you picked up a black cat named Louis, didn't you?"
Haewon went rigid because that was absolutely spot on.
"That was Asmodeus. You even let him bathe with you." Jinsol's voice dripped with mockery as she rubbed it in.
"..."
"Consider yourself lucky that bastard gave up on trying to seduce you. I've gone through his list of targets, and you're the only one who made it out unscathed."
Haewon pictured that demon pinning her down and nearly threw up right there.
As for why he'd let her off the hook, that remained a secret.
A secret Haewon would carry to her grave without ever knowing the truth. Jinsol had personally warned him to keep his distance, but the spineless prick went and snitched to Lucifer, which earned Jinsol one hell of a beating from the old man.
Haewon couldn't tear her eyes away from those one-of-a-kind wings. How incredible must it feel to be such a unique freak?
"Are you planning to stand there listening to me ramble all night?" Jinsol crossed her legs and shot Haewon a look, since the nun had been rooted to that spot for way too long.
"...". This had to be the dumbest thing Haewon had ever done. Having a conversation with a demon. Correction, a half-demon half-angel.
The black wing on her right suddenly twitched and started flapping all on its own.
"Tch, that old man's calling me back." Jinsol clicked her tongue in annoyance.
She shot up to her feet, spread those wings, and flew straight toward Haewon.
"Don't take in any stray animals you find on the street. Remember that." She gave Haewon a wink and then vanished into thin air.
"She came to see you, didn't she?"
Jinsol sat beside another demon. Unlike her own rough, gravelly voice, this one had a much sweeter, smoother tone. And her wings were fully demonic, none of that half-and-half business. Which made perfect sense, considering she'd helped Lucifer slaughter thousands of angels back in the day.
"Yeah."
"I think we should get Arnos to give you some lessons on picking up girls." She cracked a smile.
"You think you're any better than me?" Jinsol shot her a death glare.
"Well, Jiwoo and I have at least kissed. What about you?"
"Shut up, Kyujin." Jinsol snapped.
The demon called Kyujin just laughed it off. The irony wasn't lost on either of them, since she was also tangled up in some undefined thing with a human. Funny how two demons who made a big show of looking down on stupid humans had gone and fallen for two of them.
"I hope one day she splashes holy water all over that pretty face of yours." Kyujin's voice was dripping with sarcasm.
"Same to you. I hope that cop of yours puts a bullet straight through those those disgusting wings of yours."
