Summary:

SRE Prompt Week 2026 Day 6: Forced Proximity

Jacob and Tyler go on a hectic cross-country road trip and things might not go very well.

Work Text:

You weren't supposed to find this.

Those six words have been embedded into Jacob's mind ever since he found that transmission a couple of years ago.

And Tyler wasn't exactly buying it.

"Can you please stop yapping, Tyler?! We're being hunted down, remember?!"

"Oh, I know that, alright!"

The two young men passed by a group of bystanders who were terrified of what they had been through after the incident at Monarch University. They seemed to have noticed the car that was passing by.

Deep breaths, Jacob. She isn't exactly following you.

Jacob and Tyler stopped at a nearby gas station for a few snacks, along with a bottle of water.

"We're just going to get a few things for the journey, okay, Tyler?" Jacob asked.

Tyler held a hand out and gave a thumbs up. "Alright, man."

They went back in the car and continued their road trip.

Each time they did it, they were more and more unsettled by the events that happened in the previous weeks.

The next few days were also very hectic for them, as they drove through various landscapes, looking for somewhere to rest.

They finally found a place where they can sit down and lay low for a moment.

"Agent Jennifer Gates?" a voice interjected from the communication device.

"Yes?"

"Any updates on the men?"

"None so far…" The woman's voice trailed off. "However, I do have their approximate location on their GPS." She looked around before letting out a big sigh.

"Where are they?" they asked.

"They're currently at a nearby park, taking some rest," she answered calmly as she sat on a bench in the shop.

"You know what to do, then."

"Yes, sir. Agent Gates out."

"Jacob! We need to get out of here or they'll find us right away!!!" yelled Tyler to his friend.

"Wait, what?!" Jacob was surprised at what the man beside him said.

"I'm not kidding, man. That transmission is important to us!"

They both knew that it had vital information about the gate of humanity and what they could do to prevent it form happening.

They went in the car and sped off into the distance, leaving the park behind.

"You know why I didn't want to be part of this manhunt?" Tyler asked.

"Why is that?"

"Because I really just wanted to lie down and watch some of my favorite movies."

"And you know why this transmission is important?" Jacob interjected. Tyler sighed and fell silent.

"It's because people are depending on it!"

Jacob then stepped on the gas pedal and sped off into the distance.

"Wait, Jacob, can we stop at my parents' house for a while?"

"Why is that?"

"I need to get something."

Jacob nodded at his best friend and drove to his parents' house.

Tyler went out of the car and into the house, where he got some of his life savings.

"You okay now?"

Tyler gave him a thumbs up.

"Good."

Tyler went in the and closed the door.
